UPDATE SIXTEEN
Opening the gates of Death
In the center of
Ermor is the city of Eldergate, capital of the Empire.
In the center of Eldergate is the Palace, home of the Emperor.
In the depths of the Palace are the catacombs, where Death rituals were performed before the coming of the Pantocrator under the guidance of the sauromancers of C'tis.
Centuries later, Emperor Tiberius Drusus Nero Claudius smiled. His thaumaturgs had given him the part that was missing. Finally, the old rituals could be completed. Soon, Ermor's power over Death would be complete. So soon...
Meanwhile, as arcane subjects were being researched in the depths of Ermor, armies of every nation moved all over the rest of the world. Aboard ships and on roads, soldiers marched, intent of conquering lands for the glory of their gods.
In Dacia,
Pythium soldiers unearthed an ancient treasure cache, recovering lots of gold which was immediately sent to the capital. In Arcoscephale, a seer warned the population against incoming doom. He told women to eat no meat and to avoid killing any animal if they wanted to be pregant. His words convinced many women, but many mocked him. However, the results of his warnings would prove to have a positive effect on child birth in the province.
In the north,
Ermor's troops joined Pythium troops and invaded Ulm.
Ulm wizards showered iron darts and magma bolts upon Ermorian behemoths and sent one of their knights to charge them, but Pythian wizards mind-burnt him, causing him to explode far from any opponent.
Ulm wizards destroyed Ermor's undead quite easily, while Pythium infantry crawled behind the undead and kept their cavalry in reserve. After a few minutes of fight, Ermor's behemoths and longdead horsemen had been annihilated without causing serious casualties to Ulm. Now the inferior in number Pythian infantry and cavalry had to face superior numbers of heavily armored Ulm soldiers. Pythian wizards cast spells, killing many opponents, but there were many more. Ermor mages reanimated undead, and cast terrible enchantments which caused the livings' joints to stiffen, making them tire faster while the undead didn't care. Furthermore, when Pythian soldiers fell, Ermor magic turned them unto zombies and the dead rose to keep fighting.
Despite Celes' intervention, the Ermor and Pythian troops were outnumbered and outclassed. Ulm had many crossbowmen and more wizards, more infantry and more cavalry. When Celes's tail was cut off by a knight and the mighty serpent shrieked out in pain, it was too late. Celes flew away, its bloody tail writhing alone on the soil. The few remaining wizards fled the battlefield, leaving only a handful of zombies to cover their flight.
At the end of the battle, Ulm stood victorious again. Pythium and Ermor invasion armies had been annihilated, banished to the other world, and Celes maimed.
In Marignon,
Abysia soldiers had to quell a revolt of humans who refused to bow in front of the lavamen and their humanbred servants. Many died in the revolt but Abysia holds the province firmly.
Abysians of Nubia finally rooted out the last C'tis independentists of the province.
In the
Lanka province of Ashdod, some humans worshipping Sagra, god of Abysia, demanded that they be put free from slavery. They strongly resented being slaves under monkeys and rakshasas after being slaves of giants. Most Lankans mock them saying this minority would rather be the slaves of abysians. This slaves movement, although a very small minority, managed to cause some trouble and disrupted some trade in the region.
The fleet of Lanka moved north into Cyprus sea, which Shinuyama ships had fled, and Lankan ships started blocading the Arshnoc ports of T'ien Ch'i province.
Unfortunately for
Shinuyama, a huge Mictlan navy came from the north and attacked their navy. The battle was largely in favor of Mictlan, whose galleons dealt terrible damage to Shinuyama quinquiremes before they could engage them. As a result, Mictlan sank the whole Shinuyama fleet while sustaining only minor damage.
Shinuyamans of Manchuria moved into Bogarus to reclaim it. Their wizards had little problem convinving the locals with magma eruptions that resistance was futile.
After clearing out Bogarus defenses, Shinuyamans were joined by a small
Arshnoc army, who helped clear out the last defenders when news came from the north that Mictlan galleons had landed. Shinuyama and Arshnoc troops joined together to go face the northern threat.
Arshnoc tigers and lions formed the front line, with shinuyama elite warriors to the right and light infantry to the left. And their many mages in the back. Mictlan landed lots of toads, led by the Obsidian Mantis herself.
As Mictlan troops are buffed by their wizards, who also summon elementals to help them, bakemono sorcerers cast devastating spells at their opponents: Blasts of shadows which paralyze those they don't kill, fires falling from the sky, magma eruptions, cold bolts and slimes slowing their opponents, all amidst a rain of arrows.
Mictlan wizards managed to flee the battlefield, along with some of their light infantry, but their fifteen toad units were killed to the last. The Mantis and her wizards fled to the safety off their ships, where the opponent couldn't reach them.
The battle in Bogarus was won by the 5 wizards and wizard priests of Shinuyama, along with their small priests who happen to have superior magic skills too. All Arhsnoc tigers died in the battle, as they held the toads and were poisoned. Shinuyama right wing was made in part of samurais equipped with magical swords and armors that cut through the toads like butter. All toads have been killed.
In Polgard, winters have been extremely harsh and cold. As a result, winter wolves appeared in the country, and flocked to the call of
Jotunheim's god Magni.
Arshnoc priests in Dark woods managed to pacify many locals with their soothing words. Much work remains to be done to appease the population however.
In the capital, Arhsnoc citizens helped build a massive fort complex, allowing the defenses, both in land and on the coasts, to be completed at a reduced cost.
Arsnoc soldiers from Ural invaded Utgard. Unfortunately, a cease-fire had been signed between
Jotunheim and
Vanheim: Niefelheim was given back to Magni, and the giants sent most of their troops southwards into Utgard, where they clashed with Arshnoc armies.
Jotunheim had the advantage of numbers and size, and their battle magic was more efficient than Arshnoc's. After a brief fight, Arshnoc troops managed to retreat into Ural. There, a bad surprise awaited them. They saw creatures in the sky, flying southwards. These were demons, couatls and other flying beasts that had landed from Mictlan ships and were trying to fly past the province defenders. Arshnoc wizard priests were not that easy to bypass, however, as they too could fly. Lu Tun Ping the immortal, although he had been unable to prevent the victory of the giants in Utgard, decided to redeem himself. He flew to delay the invaders, summoning air elementals to delay them while other mages went south to warn the army coming from Caelum of the danger. As Mictlan troops landed to rest, they were ambushed by Arshnoc armies.
Only a pair of tzitzimitl, the flying scorpion men, managed to flee the battlefield. The rest of Mictlan troops were annihilated, but not without causing serious damage to their enemies.
Arshnoc army wanted to continue their progression towards Jotunheim lands, but the detour to catch Mictlan troops had delayed them, and they started facing very serious supply issues, all the more so since events in Ermor were unfolding.
The troops which had already retreated from Utgard stayed in Ural, while Kyzarc led a host of tigers against Polgard.
There, they were soon met by Magni himself. He wwas accompanied by a small retinue of giants, and, when he saw the tigers, he told them to go back home.
« Cats! They think they can scare ME with cats! »
Only a handful of Jotun hurlers and some winter wolves stayed with Magni, and Kyzarc sent his tigers.
Tigers and lions attacked valiantly, but in the cold province, Magni's cold aura froze them and those who were near him were soon held by his shield's vines and then frozen and unable to attack. Kyzarc and his wizards cast flame bolts, but they weren't very effective as the many tigers in front of them made aiming difficult, and most bolts missed their target. As the fight went on, Magni didn't tire, but Arshnoc wizards did, and the starving tigers were freezing. Once again, Arshnoc army had to retreat.
The deal between
Vanheim and
Jotunheim included Niefelheim retrocession, but also Midgard and Vanheim were given back by
Mictlan, and preferred trade relations were decided between these nations, to the detriment of Arshnoc and Shinuyama.
In
Ermor, a thaumaturg helped his emperor finish the ancient ritual. Then, he felt as if something was going out of control. He felt the spells he had cast to protect him from Death trigger, and he endured a terrible pain for a moment. Afterwards, he no longer felt anything. He looked at his emperor, and saw even Him flinch. A mask of pain distorted Tiberius Drusius Nero Clausius's handsome face for a moment, and then the expression changed, to be replaced by a smile.
«

We did it. Now Death will obey me.

»
The thaumaturg left the palace, and beheld a terrible scene in the streets: Everyone out there lay dead. The once proud city of Eldergate was bereft of any living people...
As the deadly ritual was finished, its effects ran all over the world: The Gates of Death had been opened. Everywhere, women aborted and children were stillborn. The eldest and the youngest died of disease. Crops didn't grow well. Milk became rare. Diseases struck in many places, in particular in the province of Man. Everywhere in the world, particularly around Ermor, people died by the thousands in a very short span of time. Food was hard to find, and large armies proved even more of a burden for the local populations. After two years, the effects of the catastrophe stopped in most places. Children were born again, cattle grew and multiplied again, but the damage had been great and entire regions had been ravaged. No place in the world had been spared, but life endured everywhere except in Ermor, where only corpses walked the streets of the
Ashen Empire.
