G-Major 65

Because 3.19.001 and .002 are the same patch level, they can exist side by side (ie you can have both installed and running valid games) we aren't going to change the setup of already running gauntlets.
I'm not sure I understand, but I guess it means "no"...
I abandonned the game I had started anyway, so no big deal.

how did you play your diplomacy early in the game?

I used the best of diplomacy: worker stealing. When your neighbouring civs have zero improved tiles, they are not much of a threat.

Also I researched BW very early to look powerful. As soon as I got Alphabet I bribed them into each other, I never was at risk of being dowed eversince.

Submitted a completely peaceful game.
They are not so bad guys after all... except among themselves ;)

Run mapfinder, asking simply for settler on a PH. Get some 200 saves. Open the very first one, I don't care what the initial site has, it's just a testing game to see how this major will work.

Settle on immediate plains ivory, which will give 2 hammers anyway. I have corn and 2 gems.

Research: Mining, Pottery, BW
Production: Worker, Warrior, Settler.

Worker steal my neighbours. Once BW is in, I decide against killing them to take more space. Get peace, whip the Settler, I need to REX fast, not much space.

Pack my 3 cities together.
GPFarm gets fish, clams and borrows 2 FP from the cottage city.
Cottage city gets 5FP (but uses only 3), cow, 2spices, gems, many river grass.
The 4th city is horrible, it gets marble, period. No food at all.

T94 I've got 3 cities, 1 settler for the fourth, 5 workers and CS sling under my belt.
1000BC stats: 4cities, 5workers, Lite, Drama, CS, 100bpt at -0gpt, 2religion.

Get Parthenon, get Taoism, HG, SoZ... AI are so busy at their (my ;)) wars that they don't go after wonders. Get Pyramids, wait 2 turns before revolting but the GP is a GA so I don't launcha GAge and I have to lose a turn to anarchy anyway.

By the way, I am still using slavery and OR. My cathedrals get delayed because I am abusing WW building, next one is Sistine's.

1AD stats: 4religions completely distributed, 12temples,2Cathedrals, 4GP, half of Educ, 200bpt at 100%, 140bpt at -0gpt.

Bad luck: GS and GP at low odds. Bulb Theology for a 5th religion, use GAge for revolting after getting Liberalism, at 340AD.

500AD, I realise this will be the winning game of the Major, I chicken out, go back to 100% research and research GunPowder, so that I have a good drafting reaction if dowed. This all was unneeded, but it was a very human reaction, wasn't it?

Fail to get MoM. TajMaj in auxiliary city, but it comes to late to help with religious buildings, I would have loved to go back to slavery for 5 turns if there had been any point.

1000AD stats: 9 cathedrals, GPFarm produces 87GPPpt, 740-820-234 cpt, 107Kc in all in the 3 cities.

WON 1350AD. 15 total GP, bombs 1-2-9, 2GS,1GP. Multipliers 4.5-5.5-2 (10cathedrals). Cottages 5-8-0.

Best thing I did:
- managing wars so that my neighbours never were at peace and never died, while the rest never had OB to get to me.

Worst thing I did:
- I should have researched Currency immediately after CS and Alphabet. I could have sold techs for money, avoiding being at 0% science (more than 20 turns in all). It would have more than paid for itself.
- With so many cathedrals, I should have built forges, I completely forgot about them.

Metagame thoughts:
how is it possible that my result in this cultural major is better than my result in the previous cultural major, where I got to choose my opponents (all peaceful AI)?

There is a little factor of my starting to learn how to play BTS, but is not very significant.
My research was slower this game, so that's not it.
My auxiliary city and flipped city didn't help with a single GA.
I had less cottages this game also...
But I built a huge amount of wonders this game. This is the key factor. As they where fighting they couldn't build any, so I got a bunch of them very early. Their culture doubled 1000 years later, so each was yielding base 20cpt, as much as 4-5 developped cottages!

I can draw a lot of conclusions from this game.
- number of cottages is not a key parameter anymore, early WW built is.
- in BTS it will be possible to get better dates at lower levels, Deity won't get the best date.
- possibly, all peaceful opponents is not the best strategy anymore.

It's been great playing this gauntlet, I've learnt a lot. Pity of those 199 saves I'm not using anymore, Epic cultural games take too long.

^^^ yeah, wonders are the best, even if they corrupt the gene pool. they are also a more reliable source of culture in an environment where you will experience frequent wars (chances are, the cottages will be pillaged). and yup, choosing only peaceful opponents for cultural is a bad idea. at least 2 warmongers may be necessary (source of gold since they usually lag in techs and to destroy the other AIs)

i guess i should just revert to my old and tested strategy. one thing i have never tried is bribing others for war - i think this is all I need to push some of the warmongers away from me. Thanks, jesusin! :)

edit: I guess this will be your win, jesusin :) I just realized it is already Jan. 10 and I don't have much time to play this gauntlet again. Great game (never thought the usual ending date is still possible with the heavy warmongers), congrats! :)

1st jesusin 1350 AD
2nd ryzax 1708 AD
3rd fizbankovi 1768 AD

Congratulations!
Especially for jesusin's impressive game! :goodjob:

Although, ryzax, was it really necessary to play a 2nd game and push me back to 4th place? ;)
I'm still proud that I managed to win this one, though ...

Congratulations to all who successfully completed this Gauntlet. In particular, big congratulations to Jesusin, for a magnificent finish date.

The setup for this Gauntlet was my idea, but in the end I wasn't able to conquer my own challenge. I had 8 attempts at this game - some played as a war-monger, and others as a peace-monger.

In 6 separate games, Shaka beat me with his Impis in the Ancient era. In 1 game, I reached the Classical era, and was taken out by Genghis's Keshiks. In the other game, I reached the Medieval era, only for Tokugawa to kill me with Samurai. Surprisingly, Montezuma was never a problem in any of my games!

In those games where I lived long enough to claim Alphabet, I was not able to bribe anyone into war, as they were all already into "we have enough on our hands right now" mode at that point!!!

So it's your own fault that you lost your n°1-position? :)

I figured someone would claim the number 1 position, but I wasn't expecting anyone to beat my former number 1 by a whole 112 turns!!!!!!

Congratulations to all who successfully completed this Gauntlet.
Indeed! It wasn't an easy challenge. :goodjob:

Interesting: all 4 submissions claimed the Top-4-spots in the HOF-table, despite our nice neighbors :king:
This still surprises me. Who would have thought we would get better dates with a bad leader and aggresive enemies than with the perfect leader and peaceful friends? :crazyeye:

Thanks for this great challenge, ianw1610, I learned a lot. Playing too much HOF is bad because you get into your confort zone and do always the same. But ideas like this one really make you think.

Hmmmm, and no wars at all? If I was at such a situation and there was a war going, I would first bribe them into peace and then bribe them into war each with a different full-handed AI, thus getting 4 AIs under control. If the 2 left alone are far away and don't have open borders to get to you, you are safe!

Yes, it's strange.

Maybe we were more concentrated 1) because it was a gauntlet and 2) because of those dangerous neighbors.

If the 2 left alone are far away and don't have open borders to get to you, you are safe!

Those that are not at war should normally have Open Borders with the others, because they still like their kind.

In my game, there were constantly wars going, so that in the end, I didn't need to bribe them to war. OTOH, I didn't dare to turn off research until I had Rifling. In the end, this paid off, because my neighbor Alex, of the same religion, just kept DOWing me ... but for some reason, his Knights died quicker than they entered my borders!

But had I stopped after Liberalism, like in a 'normal' game, I would probably not have won!

My twopence-worth on why the Gauntlet entries were so strong in comparison to the previous HOF #1 entry...

I think that Emperor-Small-Epic-Cultural is a combination of settings that has simply been overlooked for all this time by the top players, for whatever reason.

My previous HOF #1 game was from December 2008... now, I only upgraded to BTS in November 2008 so was still a BTS novice at that time. I played Hannibal and Big & Small - PURELY for the League of Nations & Map Quest - they are far from optimal settings for someone aiming at a long-term HOF #1 position. From looking at my game log of that game, I made several obvious inefficient / errant choices.

It will be interesting to see if someone can surpass jesusin's victory date, by playing Gandhi, No Barbs, Choose Religions and favourable opponents......

Thanks for this great challenge, ianw1610, I learned a lot.

On the topic of a "challenge"... anyone interested in signing up to join frequent SGOTM wooden-spooners the Chokonuts, should let me and Ozbenno know. Surely, it is boring to play for a "top" SGOTM team... :mischief:

I might try to do it.

Ha ha
The real challenge is to get enough real-life time to play a BOTM a month and to create an interesting GOTM every 2 months... and yet be able to squeeze the odd single try for a Gauntlet from time to time...
I'm retired from SGOTM.
