Role Play Challenge, TNG:The Dalai Lama, A One City Challenge

LOT's of talk on this one! Everyone loves a good OCC.

A few comments and replies

1) Statue of Liberty does not require a coastal city.

2) I am liking Replaceable Parts/Steam Power to milk the monestaries/GLib more. If I can trade for Constituion I may go Corporation.

3) Coal and OIL. I decided the Dalai Lama wants them, and I think I will hold a Great Scientist for Aluminum INc. However, I still need to see if I can get coal via culture.

4) Other Corps, I may consider Cereal Mills as refidigeration leads to Superconsductors and an early lab. Creative Constructions may be worth it but not sure.

5) As far as extra Dalai Lama's RPC attitudes, I think never bribing someone into a war is fine and he should always vote for peace. However, he is not forced to actually bribe an AI into peace.

The National Wonders

National Epic - We have it
OXford - Have it
Iron Works - Yeah I want this and will trade for iron once we build it
Wall Street - Just because I feel like a rich pig and want as much gold as I can get
Globe Theater - Because I want to defy resolution at will, and there may be others I want to defy (Free Speech, Free Religion, Universal Sufferage) as well as the mandatory war declarations.

National Park is the Odd man out. With limited military needed (thus lower costs) I see no reason NOT to run Environmentalism except for the extra trade route. If I can avoid Environmentalims I will.

Enviormentalism feels like the spirit of a peacefull leader who lives in the mountains :p

While this may seam the case and we certainly have no problem with it, still the Dalai Lama is not above the love of the Free Market (notice the spirng water bottle in the avatar picture!)

Ok, the extra trade route will bring 8 commerce or so since you can't have any boosters to it.
But you want windmills over the cows (1h vs 4 commerce), over the stone and the incense. You have incense outside the BFC, so nothing lost.
You want windmills everywhere, the extra food is good the extra commerce (from the civic), is a great bonus. Like I told: environmentalism has the best synergy w/ the map than anything else and it is better than the free market.

After some late buildings/genetics the environmentalism doesn't help the health condition (any longer, it's good at it gets) but it is still better than the free market.

Actually I forgot about the windmill bonus to environmentalism, what is it 2??? Even with just the normal hills that's probably the same commerce as a trade route from Free MArket.

OK, I see no reason to avoid environmentalism at all then!

of course it is! mad, mad...
that's why you windmill everything (and prebuild quarry if you need so). Actually environmentalism riverside grasshill windmill for FIN civ is like 2f, 3h, 6c, total monster, imo better than riverside town (and doesnt have to grow)

repeating myself, but environmentalism has no contender here.

Even once you no longer need the 6-8:health:, environmentalism still ends up being the best choice. Even corporations didn't change my mind (although i only got one) since the maintainance on corps is negligible in an OCC (with a shrine on a huge map especially).
Spoiler :
I switched to SP when i was trying to rush out space ship parts, but i didn't see any difference in turns to complete them, i figured that if i made enough overflow to eventually save a turn somewhere it'd be worth it at that point, but if i did, it wasn't enough to save me.

Interestingly, after the "money is useless in OCC" discussion I started a new archipelago OCC yesterday, and used Sushi + Mining to get +20f +10h (or so) per turn by buying all resources money could buy. I started with something like +100 gold (shrine, 3 merchants, X prophets, wall street) and went down to -30 gold per turn. Gotta love deficit spending :-)

Played the next segment and I will post it tomorrow. Let me say this is an extremely interesting earth-map playout as rather unusual events have occurred, at least in my experience. Basically Qin is getting dogpiled via an attack from Cyrus and an AP vote of which we are NOT a member (thus no defy was available). we are safe, so far!

Here is the save if you want to check it out.

That is very interesting, and unexpected.

China is currently on the ropes being attacked from all quarters in a multi front war. Which the AI handles badly. Id hazard a guess that if china doesn;t vassalise it will be totally eliminated. Definitely several cities are in imminent danger of capture from the persians and certain other enemies.

It appears that despite all the hype, the dragon has failed to roar in this game.

in my Shadow Julius completely failed to make an appearence (only have his italian and finnish cities, his cities in Germany and Baltic cultureflipped to France and Russia respectivly) ... and Hatty have been target of multiply dogpiles (and first cumbling on the 3rd, led by Saladin)

Wow! In my shadow China has six vassals (including Hattie) and is way ahead, but was very behind at the beginning. I think he raced ahead when he (a) thrashed Genghis, (b) cut down the jungle in SE Asia and then (c) colonised Indonesia and Australia before India could get there. He's also been opportunist on an almost human scale!

one thing i just thought off ... with the setting we have, China would in theory tend to be a stronger one here than they usually are since, we effectively blocks India from going though Bangladesh ...

In my First playthrough, though (got nuked by Hindu AP there) China got massively gimped by 2 things, Khan starting out with expanding SE cutting China out of Korea, and Japan effectively settling Vietnam

China was one of the major powers in my game until very late game where the asian empire cyrus and his vassals and the american empire of monty and spain both attacked him and mony made china into his vassal. Mony as fast teacher is scary no sword man spamming instead modern armor spamming :P

I played through from Mad's save and i have to say China gets owned by Persia. China was relegated as vassal of Cyrus and left languishing in borneo and eastern siberia. He ended up having a vast vassal network that effectively encircled tibet.

I predict though that poor tibet will face technological issues as the world looks set to be divided into big vassal networks. Look out for Russia, France, Persia and Aztlan. They will probably all br difficult in one way or another, technologically, militarily or diplomatically.

(btw monty was rather formidable having a firm hold on SOUTH AMERICA, as well as the North in my playoff, and having vassalised the whole new world. He even conquered london and caught up in tech) Personally hopeing to see that in Mads attempt.

The Dalai Lama: OMENS!

The Dalai Lama was bombarded by numerous prophets springing from the streets of Tibet. "The End is COming!", "Beware the Persians", "We are falling behind".

"FRIENDS!" the Dalai raises his voice, the first time he has had too since Lhasa was settled some 5000 years ago. "We will prevail." The Tibetans quiet down and the self-proclaimed prophets wait eagerly...

The Tibetans start researching Replaceable Part and Steam Power to build up the industrial base of Lhasa even more.

Glancing at the technology situation

DLE0000.jpg

The Dalai nods in satisfaction as a trade situation he expected emerges

DLE0001.jpg

He then diverts from Steam Power to Corporation for the additional commercial trade route.

This was soon followed by a wedding ceremony between a tibetan and Chinese offering an opportunity to solidify relations with the large and strong CHinese neighbors.

The next Great Person that was born is a Great Scientist

DLE0003.jpg

Who is held anticipating the need for Aluminum Inc. All other Great Prophets and Scientists we got this segment we settled.

Another random event led to a research breakthrough

DLE0004.jpg

Well worth the gold to speed up things.

And while we have no immediate uses for iron, we spring this trade before Asoka trades it to someone else

DLE0005.jpg

This allows pikes to be build, something of value later on.

After we finish Steam Power, we look to see exactly where Coal is

DLE0006.jpg

Still outside our cultural borders but we only have 56 turns before we hit legondary, one good thing about getting 2 religions allowing us to build 2 cathedrals, and the Sistene Chapel certaily helps.

The Dalal Lama is still merely human and makes a slight mistake here, researching Democracy to attempt building teh Statue of Liberty. This failed mostly due to lack of copper (duh!) and we managed to bum it off of Louis too late.

The issue about Scientific Method was addressed here

DLE0008.jpg

And while it opened up Physics, we decided it will not help that much right now and it is unlikely we are first to it.

SO where is the oil?

DLE0009.jpg

A rather difficult region, however I do not see why the Dalai would actually need oil this game anyway.

The Tibetans start to research Biology for the extra food and opening up medicine.

Once again our good Chinese friend offers us another useful trade

DLE0010.jpg

And after that, things went to hell!

To Be Continued............
