Let's play X-COM and save the Earth!

I'll take the kings shilling.

can't offer much advice - 'keep your heads down, lads', just things like that.

but I am willing to serve. :)

How did I miss this? Ok, if I'm going out there, I want grenades. All kinds and lots of them.:mwaha:

Played this game alot in the old days, just to take note, it is possible for a soldier to get so overly promoted that his TU will become "0" that means he can't move and will become useless. It happened to me when I named a soldier after myself and over trained him. Laser rifles are the best a and most versatile weapon. I will beeline my research to it straight away. Another tip is that you do not have to pay scientist/engineers/soldiers whilst they are transiting to another base...

I remember equipping some of my soldiers with both laser rifle and pistol, so if they didn't have enough TU's to shoot with the rifle they could use the pistol.

I think you get an accuracy penalty with the rifle if you have something in the other hand. You can do two pistols but it doesn't give you extra shots.

20% penalty irc. You got something like 15% bonus if your kneel and shoot!

I actually have thought about hosting a forum game based on this.

Opening storyline

You are solider working for an elite multi-national clandestine force whose mission is to protect Earth from Alien Invasion. However it is clear that earth is loosing the battle. You know it and even your teammates know it. As you are suiting up for a mission you talk with your teammates and you all concluded that the best chance for survival would be to steal a spacecraft find another planet to live on. However you know nothing would be that simple.

The Aim of the Game
Be the first to get to the centre of a space craft (Navigation room)

The Catch
Have to avoid/kill Aliens and a player control Sergeant.
Limited Equipment load out.

Set-up
Random landed space craft map
7-9 players
Each person chooses a player and gets to pick their equipment.
The player will control all aspects of the character such as where to move, shoot, scan, stun, etc etc.

Thoughts?

God I love this game!

Haven't read all of the thread but I would sugest giving the boot to any soldier with a bravery score lower than 20. Early game its not so bad butr can be a real arse later. Its annoying to train those troops up just for them to panic as soon as an officer goes down.

As soon as you can replace all brought wepons with laser pistols and then laser rifles. I keep the Lpistols for HW guys and scouts etc. Also try to capture a navigator ASAP (hit and miss till mind probes) so you can build the Hyperwave decoder. This allows you to target your resourses more effectivaly as you can see the alien missions.

A good early money maker is selling laser pistols.

I'll finish reading the thread now...

Getting a navigator is not really hit and miss. If you find a large scout, you bet your sweet bottom dollar that there is a navigator in the navigation room.

The return on early items is not good. There is a profitablity spreadsheet your can download which can help with your manafacturing decisions.

I just started a new game. Just done my first terror misson !!! Stupid floaters.

The best x-com resource is www.ufopedia.org - Just pure awesome.

Hang on is this thread dead?

Oh well. I'll just go play ufo....

It had better not be! Ok this is my subscription post hehe. I read it too a couple of weeks ago. It looked really promising. Maybe I can be part of the crew too when Captain2 gets his head blown up.

I got the game when it was 2$ on Steam the other day, it's still fun.

Also, and unrelated, grandad1982, I haven't seen you since the very early days of "Nobles Club", I don't check the Civ 4 forums much these days... I played about 4-5 games (the first ones!) in the NC but I suddenly didn't have time to play anymore. And now well, I'm waiting for Civ 5 I guess...

IIRC, Laser Cannons used to be the most productive manufacturing good.

Hi SimonL. I remember playing NC with you. After a few games of NC I really got into the succession games. Like you (and the world in general) I'm mainly waiting for CIV5 now.

CIV5 could be a very long wait.

I used to play X-COM a lot back in college. I wonder why no one really has used the original X-COM license to create a updated remake. Maybe it fell into it that same dark hole that MOO2 did.

Or Alpha Centauri, at this point.

I think what happens to these classics is that they lose their champions to other pursuits. Once a key game designer/developer moves on to another project, it gets handed off to someone with a different vision. Once that happens, the game loses essence of what made the original work and the project ultimately falls flat (MOO3 for instance). There are some exceptions. CIV IV is a great game and carries forward some of the same concepts as CIV 3. They are still different games.

You can still have a blast playing MOO2 and X-COM using DosBox. It would be nice to have updated graphics & sound though.

Sorry guys, been a bit distracted by learning how to program a computer from 1982 and making a remake of a game from 1983.

I'll try and get this restarted when my Manic Miner remake is done.

If you know what Manic Miner is, kudos, and check out my remake (work in progress)

Obviously you'll need a ZX Spectrum emulator, I use ZXSpin. I recommend playing the original Manic Miner first to gawp in disbelief at how slow and flickery it is ;)
