Dr kossin #36

@huerfanist

You're right he wouldn't ^^". I normally disregard thumbnails as being serious... but given what they show, you are definitely right. Thank you for correcting me.

Good thing I'm on mobile where the thumbnail is way too small to look at and see anything.

However by the comments so far I guess either the map or the neighbors aren't too friendly (or both)... shhhhhhh

I haven't looked at the save, so this is in no way spoiler, but is this the point where people stop wishing "I wish Kossin would lose for a change" and start saying "I wish Kossin would win once again"? ;)

I wish Kossin would lose in Renaissanse/Industrial/Modern, personally. Much more exciting then all these Shaka daggers.

I'd like it if he was like almost about to lose but then suddenly something were to happen and he's back on track, like aahhhh

Round 1

As VoU suggested and I agreed, the first thing to do was move the worker NW. Moving to the coast could be interesting if there was a *very* good reason for it.
Spoiler :

This wasn't good enough however. Moving to the plains hill is intriguing however but it means 2 turns (which are gained back on the worker if we go worker first). Given that WK doesn't have Hunting or AH, it means we shouldn't start with a worker right away making it less interesting an option. We don't start with Fishing and Clams aren't worth it imo...
Finally looking closer we can see...

...meaning a lot of coast, possibly all coast and no extra seafood... thus it's risky.

I've been playing with blue circles on lately and, while I still do not trust them, I find they sometimes hint at something you might not immediately see.

I suggested moving 1W earlier to grab all the grassland hills for a good production/commerce hybrid. What we gain is pretty obvious, however what we lose is less obvious sometimes. Of course it means I lose 1 flood plain.
Spoiler :

Look closely, the 5 tiles I lose east are all plains, some forested and a hill. Maybe I will lose a gold but a second city could go there. Most likely, a blue circle would be under the settler if there actually was something over there so I'll assume there isn't!

Which lands me this capital:
Spoiler :

The warrior is sent east and comes across a very nice city spot.
Spoiler :

Seoul wouldn't have been bad on the plains hill but not having Fishing kinda stinks for this approach.

First build is worker and techs Ag>AH to improve the pig and farm a flood plain.

Going east meets the first AI.
Spoiler :

For once in my life, I remember to do this:
Spoiler :

It doesn't do much really but at one point I might see his research which is useful for trading. Not focusing EP on anyone doesn't grant anything until very late.
Also the AI tends to not assign anything to you if you don't have any EP against them.

Further east, I meet an even better neighbor.
Spoiler :

sarcasm alert

Completing AH reveals horses.
Spoiler :

Out of reach to even the original location...

My exploring warrior went up along the coast until he found JC. I've got quite a bit of room but not so much since these 2 guys expand pretty fast.
Spoiler :

Early in AH research, both leaders revolted to Slavery... this meant I had a good discount on BW and tried my luck.
Spoiler :

Haha I'm even more glad I moved now!

Here's an example of focusing on commerce.
Spoiler :

Before

I kinda fumbled this screenshot, I reassigned the tiles then thought I'd take a screenshot so I put them back. However I forgot to put the fp on the grassland mine.

After

See the difference? 1 turn shaved off The Wheel. This might not seem much but Civ is like the fly that flaps its wings.... it ends up in a storm. Every tiny bit turns up much larger later on.

City #2 settled by the gold, improve the cows first, and the road is done before the city is settled.
Spoiler :

Rather than spamming settlers, I spammed a few Axes to take barb cities.
Spoiler :

This trade nets me 1 health and brownie points with JC earlier. I want to avoid war if possible here.
Spoiler :

On t82 I luck out with religions... which I usually never do.
Spoiler :

First Scientist makes an Academy.
Spoiler :

And Aesthetics gets the trades started.
Spoiler :

I capture and keep this barb city. Even if it ends up culturally pressed by Sury, denying it to him helps me more than it drags me down. If I raze it he'll just settle there anyway. It can always be used for drafting a few rifles/muskets.
Spoiler :

Sadly, I get beat to Parthenon by someone overseas. The gold is worthwhile however.
A few GGs have been born overseas which I hope is good otherwise.
Spoiler :

Another trade...
Spoiler :

This one surprised me... I rarely see so much gold in the hands of the AI this early.
Spoiler :

I wanted to stop at 1AD but with Parthenon gone early and me a bit slow on TGL, I played on to secure it with a whip:
Spoiler :

Quite lucky here if I can say so.

And I stopped there.
Spoiler :

Relations are pretty good but not good enough yet.
Spoiler :

And our non-resized world (WARNING LARGE screenshot)
Spoiler :

So there you go. Not great land but if I can manage cannons before the AI it shouldn't be too hard to win this one. Famous last words but swallowing one AI, say Sury, will give me a good start to control this continent. After the continent is mine... probably no AI can stop me from Domination/Space. We'll see how it all plays out still, I've got a lot of things to get done before I get a tech edge!

:goodjob: Veruh nice, looking forward to this, in my recent game with Korea (random) I didn't enjoy it very much, financial is great but starting techs hurt, blah blah, I won with Dom.

Doesn't seem you're going to use your UU so much this time, Seowon is nice though.

@ Bakshi -- other way around. Sury is a zealot, and JC is probably running OR (Sury's favorite civic) too.

I think we can reveal to Kossin at this point that in both Kadazzle's and DampRain's games, Sury didn't found any religions, making the diplo. on this island a bit more... Praetorian-y...

Hey kossin, just a question. Wanted to know why you settled W instead of NW, it obviously worked out what with the copper placement. But as I saw/see it, 1NW netted 2 extra plain hills and a flood plain for 1 grass hill and the clam could've still been gotten by settling 1n of the plains hill (where you actually plan to have a city anyway, although you didn't know that then).

what am i missing? thanks

Might it be a good idea to fogbust that last little bit of land to the south to prevent barb galley spawn annoyance? Or are barb galley spawn rules different to land barbs?

Grassland hills are much superior to plains hills for food consumption. Since I was planning a commerce hybrid rather than a pure hammer city, plains require more food ie more farms which I didn't want early on.

It would certainly be worth it but it's too late now I think. Nowadays barb galleys do not enter culture to pillage from more than 7 tiles away so I should be safe for a while in any case.

guess you'll settle city "a" NE of horses one south (and still coast access) for more grassland as soon as you've civil service?

wp so far, your empire is somewhat strechted ... seems to work out nonetheless, nice :)

^^Yes, directly E of horses. grassland will be farmed for growing. It's a marginal city but I'll need everything I can for drafting myself out of this hole.

Although I have 8 cities, some of them don't have the food to actually do anything useful.

From on here, cities will focus on food for whipping infra and in preparation of draft rounds most likely.

Great bpt, nice enough land and lucky on the GLib. I'm surprised you managed to steal that much land in the direction of JC and Sury. The tundra looks like it'll be an awesome NP site later on, but it won't add anything early. Financial coast is good enough to settle it sooner rather than later though.
