Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

is there a way to view all Firefox bookmarks at once without the folder structure

Is this what you're looking for?

In Firefox, open Bookmarks from the menu bar and select Organize Bookmarks. In the resulting window, select Import and Backup, then Export HTML .... Save the file bookmarks.html to a convenient location, such as your desktop. Finally, double-click on bookmarks.html to open a nicely formatted list of your bookmarks.

(These instructions work in Firefox 3.6.6. Might be different in other versions.)

Question: My mom was watching this movie while I was in the living room doing something. In the movie some detective/spy is on a laptop and the laptop says "You Have Email." Then it shows the subject being "I confess to the murders of..." and the email body is a list of names. Then the guy opens this video where the guy is confessing then the guy in the email video says something about destroying evidence and then the laptop randomly expldodes. What are the chances of this in real life?

Zero. If the email installed a virus, it could do any file or software damage that the laptop wasn't sufficiently protected against. However, laptops are not constructed with bombs inside them. And except for a few bad batteries, there is nothing there that can be made to explode. And software won't explode the battery. There is no self destruct bomb built into the average laptop.

0 unless it's wired to explode

it could have the same effect, though, for all intents and purposes, by deleting everything on the HDD... they prolly made it explode for dramatic effect because most people are ignorant about computers (or were when the movie was made). IDK.

thanks. But how could a virus spread if it deleted everything on the HDD?

Question: How do you extract an icon from a 16-bit binary? (Vista doesn't show them.) I tried half a dozen programs and haven't got it yet.

you could try just doing a search for ".ico" (as part of the filename, not within the file). Than scroll/browse for the one you want.

If all else fails I mean.

Thanks. I did manage to pull them out.

I have a copy of SimPark. I installed it to C:/Games/Maxis/SimPark and it kept giving me errors that it couldn't open certain files. I moved it to C:/SimPark and changed the INI files and it worked. What happened? There were no spaces in the name and I dont think its over 250 characters.

EDIT: I'm a stupid dope. I had the INI file pointed to C:/Games/Maxis/SimPark/simpark.SPD when it should have been C:/Games/Maxis/SimPark/data/simpark.SPD

Yeah I figured it out.

Question: I installed the HP driver for my scanner. I specified for it NOT to install the auto-updates. However it keeps randomly popping up in the middle of the night. I looked in the HP folder and the update program is there. I renamed it to hpwuSchd2NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.exe. However now it just pops up a missing resource error and opens the CD drive (that scared the heck out of me when it woke me up. good thing the front of the computer tower was open). Its not in Add/Remove programs. How do I stop the thing?

Uninstall everything HP on your system. Seriously, it's worse than a virus. I hate buying HP stuff because it loads a bunch of crapware into your system, drags your resources down, and moves in like a bad habit.

How do I use my scanner then without the driver?

It's an HP, right? So then it probably makes an excellent door stop. A paperweight's a bit too much for it, because it's bigger than the stack of papers. You could probably use it to raise your monitor to a more comfortable level. A boat anchor might work too, I bet that thing weighs a ton.

Or you could check google for a generic vista scanner driver.

I'm looking but not much luck finding one. I get generic ones for specific brands.

Question; Which should be done first? checkdisk or defrag.

Ever since I installed windows 7 my computer freezes then crashes anytime I watch a youtube or any other internet video fullscreen. It's only if it's in a browser, and it's done it on both firefox and internet explorer. Anyone haev any idea what could be the cause?

SSD's are limited mostly by their controller and interface, although the type of flash memory used also matters. SATA 2.0 only has 3 Gbit of bandwidth, which is pretty low.

The drive you linked to has a pretty powerful controller and its using a PCIe x8 interface which can theoretically hit 4 Gbyte/s for PCIe 2.0 or 2Gbyte/s for PCIe 1.0. The controller probably cannot keep up with that, but it makes damned good use of that kind of bandwidth. The flash memory is also extremely high capacity, 4GB SLC chips are fast -- really fast. Thats why it costs 10 grand -- a mindblowing 20$ per GB.
