HFC - Cup 5a - Augustus's Revenge

Thanks alot. :goodjob:

So we need to:
A) Get in Heriditary rule.
B) Get Biology.
C) Get Mass Media and Constitution for Represintation.

I'll post a round covering all that. Ty Cam H!

(a.) Hereditary Rule now.

(b.) Nationalism > Constitution

Big decision here is to whether Shanghai or Guangzhou gets Hermitage. Swap into Representation on acquisition of Constitution.

(c.) Biology

Before Biology, Farm over unworked Cottages to get an appropriate :food: haul in Beijing and to a lesser extent Shanghai.

(d.) Possibly Mass Media, possibly military tech', possibly Medicine, possibly Astronomy ...?

Big decision is at what point do you swing the commerce slider into high culture / low science after you get Biology. Through Representation you will still be getting a mild tech' rate anyway. Getting to Mass Media is expensive, especially if you don't get the WoWs, but the pay-off is good if you do get the Wonders. Broadcast Towers are at least some reward. You may hit Emancipation unhappiness as you stick with the Caste System while your commerce slider is still aimed at science, and might even need to build Colosseums to support your Pavilions. A small tip: If you need :hammers: in Guangzhou, you can convert Farms to Workshops for short periods before switching back, but obviously its focus is on popping Great Artists. In the meantime, try to avoid getting invaded, which might involve gifting technology or Sugar or cash or something-or-other from time to time.

Cam H.
Completed Objectives A and B. Unfortunetly I built the Hermitage in beijing...because I was not thinking and my reasons where:
1) I could always switch it to a Great artist farm post Biology & Legendary status.
2) I ran out of forests to cut.

Meh, stupid mistakes fit in with the HFC ego.

:cringe: Hermitage is often / typically used for the city otherwise likely to be the last to cross the line of the three earmarked Legendary cities when pursuing this victory type.

Oh well - play on or alternately reload I guess.

:)

Thanks again Cam H.

I'm learning how thick I am on this game. :)
And learning a crap load aswell.
I suppose I can learn where to put hermitage the next game...and if I lose I know what to blame it on. :p

I suppose a lot of it is experience as well as understanding the strategies adopted by others, which both take time. Good that you recognise that you're improving though! :)

The three city cultural challenge isn't necessarily easy, but there are some moves that you've unfortunately missed here that's made it harder: Only one religion to work with, missing The Pyramids, and missing The Sistine Chapel in my view have each hurt your chances a bit in this challenge. The map isn't supa-dupa either for you, with quite a lot of Plains and/or generic Coast tiles near the very few food resources available - let alone one of the poorest settle-in-place capital spots I've seen for a while.

Where you go from here I'm not sure, but Beijing will overshoot Legendary status by quite a lot if you do make it into the late 20th Century and beyond, and there's no need to 'build Culture' there if you were at all considering that. I've not seen this latest incarnation of your game, but I guess you'll need to pop as many as a dozen Great Artists (create Great Work / bomb) to get your two other cities up to 75,000:culture: each as their base :culture:/turn is not going to be all that impressive. As such, Biology becomes even more important to support tons of Artist specialists in Guangzhou and Beijing. Consider the National Park in Guangzhou for the health benefit now that Hermitage is gone.

As always, best of luck.

Terrific Scolding as usuall Cam H. :goodjob:

The round has been played, I tried to follow your advice as best as I could (Don't worry, I got Biology asap!).
But I won't be posting it today as my Girlfriend is coming over.
Expect a post tommorow.

Round 5 - The Scolders Plan

Some stats. We're doing alright in tech, but Darius I is just tech whoreing.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0026.jpg

We're now reaserching Medicene. We'll be turning the Culture Slider soon, as our citys are already demanding Emancipation.

All does seem to be going along nicely.

Hopefully you've reclaimed those two Floodplains north of Shanghai by now. If so, I'm not sure if you Farmed or Cottaged them, but Farming and running Artists is likely the superior choice.

After Medicine, maybe crawl your way to Rifling with Representation-fuelled Artist specialists? I'd be reluctant to trade away Biology, although if it's demanded of you, you might need to consider it. Sitting Bull might research Rifling for you, and you probably could trade for it with him? If you can get out a couple of small stacks of Riflemen (mainly / entirely out of Beijing) without compromising your victory target too much, it might just give you a tiny bit of protection in case of an incompetent AI invasion. The diplomatic landscape looks very encouraging for you however. Maybe sell Music to Alex for his 240:gold:?

Dare I ask, how far away are Guangzhou and Shanghai in terms of total :culture: and :culture:/turn if you had the slider at 80%:culture:?

Yes, I cottaged those floodplains in Shanghai.

I was hopeing Peter would tech some techs for me to steal, be he seems to be following my technological suite.
So I suppose we crank up the slider post Medicine?

I don't think that generating a Great Person for either Sid's Sushi or Creative Constructions is going to be any better for you than a Great Artist's 'Great Work' bomb given your limited number of resources. Corporation's +1:traderoute: would be nice, so that would be one that I'd pick up if you could by either self-research or trade (although not for the cost of Biology).

I would think about going after Rifling or Railroad for the units, but your diplomatic state seems excellent anyway, so you might get through this exercise without going to war at all.

You'll want to do a bit of number crunching in terms of how many Great People you'll pop and how many turns of culture your cities will generate. As before, Beijing should coast to Legendary, especially if you are running Great Artists there in order to supplement Guangzhou's efforts to pop Great Artists. I tend to hold back on my Great Artists until the penultimate turn, so you know exactly which city on what turn will go Legendary given the bombs you have, while I suspect (with no proof) that mass bombing doesn't throw up any flags to the AI in the lead up turns ... that is, the AI might see you as a greater threat if it sees that your cities only have 5 turns to go Legendary, rather than sitting on three Great Artists and being perceived to be 25 turns away from Legendary.

As previously mentioned, the Electricity-Radio-Mass Media line has its attractions, but it could well be too late to compete with Darius and possibly Peter for those Wonders, and Broadcast Towers on their own are hard to justify the long technology path in this case. I'm not sure on this one, but instinct is telling me that you should direct your commerce to culture.

I have kranked up the Culture Slider.
I did trade Biology to all of the civs with techs I needed, but the deals where Great. (In my opinion anyways, considering we got Rifling/Corporation 2000 gold and some other things I can't remember off the top of my head.)

Can we get some inside pictures of the cities Metzi? This way it is also visible to see happy and health and how your cities are specialized. That would be great. It looks like the great scolders advice is working out.

Haha. Yes, Scolding is the best way to learn.
I can tell you, however about all the citys in the round I'm playing:

Beijing has reached legendary, at capped happiness/Health with 25 pop. It's pumping out units at a constant rate.
Shanghai is 66 turns away from Legendary. It has the national park, thus it's at 27 pop with maxed Happiness/Health. It's stealing the land off of Peter at an increasing rate.
Guanzhou is my worrie. It's at 11 artists, but is at 23 population with -5 polution. It's 143 turns from legendary.

I'll try and add some pictures in the next round of the citys.

Actually, the saved game might be better.

If you've essentially stopped :science: but feeling that happiness caps are constraining you, then switching back to Hereditary Rule might be a good move. None of your rivals have Representation as their favourite civic, so you won't be losing diplomatic standing there.

On :yuck:; I'm not sure if you ever made it to Medicine for Environmentalism and Hospitals? Depending upon your trades to date, Combustion brings Public Transport that can also help.

Medicine was the first tech I went for, and BOY was it worth it. :goodjob:
But, as I'm changed all the cottages to farms (For a-lot of artists) I believe constitution is still the best option.

Round 6 - A Victorious Requim.
Sorry for the long update, but I've been busy. Only today have I finished this long-drag of entertainment/hair loss.

What we get for Biology.

civ4screenshot0001p.jpg

civ4screenshot0002m.jpg

civ4screenshot0003h.jpg

Tech path in this round went: Medicine/Physics/Electricity/Radio/Artiliiary/Combustion.

And, Beijing has achived legendary status! All the Artists are allowed to rape, loot and pillage at pleasure.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0011d.jpg

War, which doesn't suprise me... considering that entire continent had WHEOOHRN fists. Typical AI behaviour... we would never do anything so un-regulation. :)
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0012a.jpg

This is realy turning into a World War scenario. The entire continent is at war, except we and Peter in our bubble. So we and Peter tie the knot, metaphorically speaking.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0013c.jpg

Oh look, irony at it's finest. Unfortunetly we can no-longer inbreed our artists. :(
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0017.jpg

civ4screenshot0019.jpg

And city number 2 reaches Legendary status without the benefits of Artistic inbreeding! Also some close ups of all the citys, requested by some chap that I can't remember.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0024d.jpg

civ4screenshot0025x.jpg

civ4screenshot0026.jpg

There where alot of trades obviously, but listing them all would invole uploading 90 pictures and posting several rounds. And most of them where uninteresting anyway.
I'd also like to mention we have poped 2 Great Artists for our Gungshou city. If my calculations where correct, 20 rounds and I could 'bomb' my way to victory. Terrorist pun there.

And the perfect oppertunity welcomes itself, as World War 2 commences. I'd also like to add that Darius made several thrusters and other shiny/expensive things for a space ship. So this war might save me!
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0033.jpg

Now...calculations!
2 Great Artists = 14000 culture points...
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0037.jpg

And pressing the button = Win....
So I guess you can guess what happened.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0038.jpg

civ4screenshot0039r.jpg

And our score!!!!
It was a long drag, and my first culture victory...which the score shows.
And after Inbreeding Artists into submission, we can accept Ceasers Revenge!
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0040t.jpg

Yeah. Allready got an Idea for the next one.

Have you read/heard of a Culture Crush? There have been a few games on it.
Basically it's a domination win with:
  • Allways Peace. Yes, we must win by cultuarly flipping enough citys to gain a Domination win.
  • The map MUST be pangea. For obvious reasons.

I have tried the culture crush on a fantasy map with Huayna. It is really fun and corporations are very welcome (sids and creative and jewelers). The hard part is when you want a conquest victory. In my game I had capitals under pressure by 6 cities that were generating something like 400-500 culture per turn and after a 100 turns still didn't flip. In that case you need to pollute cities like mad and incite revolts so they can't upkeep a big army and they will flip more likely :)
