Autumn of 751
Little village of Gormadash-Goro does rather well - granary is full of food and warriors train hard - they are proud to be strong, well fed orcs.
Chill Bill the organizer of trapping line, wants to become a true hunter and decides to learn archery. Being as "smart and silent" as he always is, he decides to learn archery skill from warriors instead of hunters. He barrows a bow and bag full of arrows from storage and heads out onto practice field to get someone to teach him. Once on practice field, he approaches one of the Wild Brothers skilled warrior-trainer. This skilled trainer "knows" Chill
Bill for his remarkable skill at keeping his mouth shut and makes few comments about it. Despite of clearly hostile behavior coming from warriors,
Chill Bill still decides to practice with bows without a teacher. So, he watches others and attempts to mimic their moves. He watches and learns:
Move one - check bow condition, move two pick up arrow, move 3 support arrow on bow, move 4 pull back bow string etc. However first attempt to mimic these moves ends up breaking bow string and arrow falling less than a meter away from him. Friendly trainer imminently points at him and laughs, as do his students. Later, same trainer mimics
Bills behaviour in front of larger group of military trainers who also burst laughing. Despite of this,
Bill gets replacement bow and does not give up, second shot comes out better arrow flies 2 meters before hitting ground with its tail first. Practice, Practice, Practice enough and you'll learn it
Bill repeats to himself.
If Chill Bill would be Ugly, his practice would have looked similar to this
He aims third shot towards target, takes his time, pulls back bow string slowly - like an experienced shooter and
then someone behind him screams Wild cows are attacking.
Bill shudders and shoots arrow at random direction, only to relize seconds later that it was same trainer, making fun over him. Despite of this accident, arrow
Bill shot at random direction, ends up in not so random person. It comes out, that in confusion and
fearbravery, Bill managed to shoot an arrow into overseers lower back, into area where back ends and legs start and where people sit on. He also managed to hit his target during best time - when
Stoll was talking with village most respected members. This naturally meant that entire group of angry mob of followers began chasing poor
Bill around. (Not only stoll+followers but also Respected members and their followers).
Bill manages to escape with just few hurting shoulders, but his reputation is was damaged none the less. During rest of the season, he avoided bows and arrows and training area like wildfire.
After several weeks had passed,
Bills superior bravery was still a joke about evening campfires. Stoll just got a light wound and no one dared to make fun over overseer.
Bill becomes a laughing target of commoners. (Respect drops from none to slightly disliked)
Upon hearing about that terrifying event, little-known Immortal called
Shurzurn, was seen heading towards boar caves and later sounds of collapsing rocks was heard. Some elderly women say that he was mumbling something about hybernation and self-finding most of orcish brothers believe that
Shurzurn simply went insane and killed himself. Others believe that
Shurzurn went to find inner peace and closed himself into boar caverns. But maybe he'll return from these caverns some day?
It seems Bill is not only immortal who wished to train art of warriors many other immortals also practice same arts. 6 out of 9 immortals known to us train to become warriors. Names of those who practiced the arts of warrior were:
Luke, Gorrik, Ugag, Xialo, Maxwell and Gaarth.
Ugag one of the more known immortals (due series of accidents that happen to orcs around him), also trains with soldiers he trains well and learns basic fighting meaning he now knows towards who to point spears sharper end and how to block easiest hits. He also demands to be though how to properly use spear to kill bird-mans with, despite several instructors refusing teaching (after getting several light stab wounds)
Ugag still manages to learn 25% of basic spear use (and stab several instructors in the process, the instructors do not complain, as it is rare to see such enthusiasm among warriors in training).
One less known immortal,
Luke, also wishes to learn arts of warriors, he specifically demands to be thought use of both axes and swords. He is quickly convinced (by being beaten up by trainers) that he should learn basic fighting before thinking about trying to learn proper weapon handling. He oftens spars with immortal called
Gorrik, losing most of the matches. Not much else can be said about
Luke and
Gorrik training.
Luke gains 50% basic fighting, while
Gorrik masters Basic Fighting.
Ugag spends most of his free time dragging rocks and tree stumps into practice area. At first most orcs refuse to participate in Ugag organized events, but thanks to Little-Ugag efforts and word bending skills many warriors-in-training eventually join Ugag-games team and find his tasks and games to be rather challenging. But then again, who'd want to show, that he cannot carry 50 kg rock in his backpack all day, 'specially if lady-orcs also constantly check out fitness team with their beautiful eyes. By the end of the autumn more than half the soldiers are more bulkier than they were in beginning of the season.
Ugag, thanks to constant training and organizing gains some respect among military warriors and gains strength. Ugag is now rated Average in strength (This rating is compared to military warriors not commoners!).
Ugag gains one follower.
One ex-Whisperwind clan trainer training young warriors
Maxwell is one of the immortals who expresses interest in becoming a sword-fielding warrior, but he is quickly convinced (by using brute force method) that he should learn basic fighting (and dodging) with all weapons and shields before even thinking of becoming specialist. He does that and even joins Ugag games team, but does not do very well in those games. Despite of that,
Maxwell still learns basic fighting.
When not practicing (read: beating up Luke) basic fighting,
Gorrik too participates Ugag-games and does rather well, winning several competitions (where Ugag did not participate). He also participates in running competitions and is always in leading group of runners. Some orcs point out that running is skill only used by the weaklings. As result to constant training
Gorriks stamina and strength improve, he is now rated as weakling (1) better than many others who have no strength at all!
Gorrik reveals his secret of treating spear tips in fire to improve spears durability with others. Sharing this knowledge gains him some respect among hunters who have biggest issues with broken and blunt spears. Gorriks respect among hunters rises from very low (1) to low (2).
Gorrik loses knowledge of making Charred Spear tips. (It is not a private knowledge it isnow commonly known. For an example anonymoose secret fishing area is only his to know)
Xialo and
Gaarth are two immortals who too participate in training teams and Ugag-games.
Xialo fares does rahter well, learning 50% of basic fighting. Gaarth does not do so well as overrates his strength and drops large boulder on his left foot, breaking several toes in the progress. This wound causes lots of trouble to Gaarth, but despite few broken toes and pain (only a weakling would make little pain a problem!)he eventually manages to learn 25% of basic fighting.
Gaarth does not let that wound to stop him. This little wound and few broken toes actually do more good than bad to to him.
Gaarth uses his wits, good looks and his wound to win respected among local village ladies and surprisingly, he is very successful it seems women care for him and both he and his wound are well treated by volunteers. By the end of the Autumn,
Gaarth gains 1.5 followers, increasing his followers number to 2.
Luke attempts to use his restored relations with crafters to repair his broken fighting axe, after several days of convincing and constantly begging, one of the craftsmen agrees to fix his axe. Luke just has to do few annoying tasks for him in exchange. Doing those cleaning and sorting tasks is annoying, but
Luke manages to pull himself through all of that and gains his reward med quality fighting axe.
Maxwell spends his free time talking with crafters to fix/further improve his swords. Crafters, most already annoyed by Luke, get very angry due constant disturbing. And as orcs are hot headed - calm their anger on Maxwell. (Some of them even attack and beat
Maxwell up). Eventually
Maxwell attempts to fix his sword by himself. He just compares his sword with poor quality short swords and attempts to clean, reattach/replace broken parts. As expected, he he does not do very well, but swords is now fully usable. This Sword could be improved to good quality if some crafter would take a look at it.
Maxwell loses respect among Craftsmen, Maxwell gains med quality sword.
Xialo when not training with warriors chooses to fish with group of fisherman. He holds group well together, organizes commoners to take away caught fish and helps fishermen a lot. His actions are greatly rewarded, 'specially by the fact, that he catches enough fish to come in second place just after clans most masterful fisherman. His actions
or luck? are greatly rewarded he gains respect among fishermen and one teeny orcish girl has been witnessed to hang around him more and more often. - It is obvious that this girl likes taste of the fish. Xialo gains respect among fishermen.
Xialo gains ½ follower (Teeny girl
).
Local overseer,
Stoll does not let little-arrow-in-the-butt-event to disturb him. Instead he (and his followers) focus on helping out farmers with the harvest. His group helped clan a great deal and thanks to his efforts many more plants were gathered, compared to what farmers would have manage to gather with their own numbers.
Stoll is not stupid, being overseer and all, he learns quickly what plants can be eaten and what can not, during evenings farmers even tutor him by showing what plants may be eaten and telling where they grow.
Stoll gains 50% basic herb knowledge.
Wotepchu Broadhand seems to working with plants. Many local sane orcs call him insane, but
Wotepchu does not give up he tries to cook seeds and plants, he speaks with farmers or listens when they teach
Stoll. He even goes into forest, travels alone and looks for many kinds of plants gathers them and then visits farmers or shamans to see what these plants do. He even treats
Gaarths broken toes with great success (toe do not fall off or wither and die!). His travels through woods also reveal a small ledge, what hides entire field of healing plants (enough for 25-30 units!), it seems this ledge even hides these plants from snow and nearby river should keep warm enough temperatures that plants are gather-able even during winter season.
By the end of the season
Wotepchu gains:
*Advanced Herb knowledge he now knows several healing and treating plants, he could survive in the wildreness only by eating plants, as he now knows enough editable plants, he also knows some plants what are required to boil or cook before they become safe enough to eat.
*Knowledge of healing plant area, with possibility to gather 20-30 healing plants in one trip, resulting loss of this plant field or 5-10 plants every season.
*1/2 follower (one young orc seems to be interested in arts of alchemy and herb knowledge)
One of the plants what Wotepchu discovered to be poisons, unless boiled in water - then poison disappears and plant can be used as healing plant.
To wear off his bad luck,
Bill decides to go on a scouting trip alone. He prepares for this trip long time - two weeks. But when he leaves Gormadash he is well prepared armed with a spear and a knife, has enough dried rations rations for two weeks. His backpack also few healing and stamina herbs, trap essentials (to attempt to catch something when he is sleeping), fire-making rocks and much more. Bill is careful, he sleeps during midnights and traps his surroundings his traps also provide him with additional food income of wild rabbits, gigant frogs and few gigant maggots (size of a fist).
Chill Bill travels around village, towards mountains to see if he can find birds-horror nesting area. He is unlucky and sees no gigantic birds flying by. Bill then sets his feet towards used fireplace, getting confused and disoriented for several days he eventually manages to reach to that used fireplace area. As he gets closer, he can clearly see small pillar of smoke rising from this fireplace. Is it being used by friend or a foe? A traveling merchant or bull creatures?
Bill is scared, but He waits for nightfall, leaves his bag behind and sneaks closer to the fireplace area. It takes several hours of sneaking and listing to even slightest sounds, until
Bill finally reaches close enough to fireplace to see creatures that lit that fire. It seems that this fireplace is being used by
orcs. It seems this camp is temperory built out of leather tents with few quickly built wooden sheds(cowered with dried plants). It less likely that anyone would live in this sort of camp during winter and there does not seem to be a field or drinking area near by either. To his surprise he recognizes one of the Wild Brothers, who left Gormadash during summer. Seconds later
Bill hears sound of running coming behind him and less than a second later he is caught, beaten down and tied up, before he manages to fight back.
He wakes in the morning, in the middle of the camp.
Chill Bill is clever, he moves his fists and legs very slowly, to check if he is tied to something. Again, to his surprise, it seems
Chill Bill is untied. He shivers and open his eyes when elderly woman voice next to him says: You are not tied up and you are not our prisoner. We are not going to hurt you, you may open your eyes and sit like an honorable and brave orc would do. or you may continue playing dead until you get hungry." Chill Bill chooses first option of two as he sits he scans his surrounding, he sees large amount of orcs staring at him while doing, what seems like, preparations for winter. It seems this camp survives only on hunting and plant gathering and security around camp is much higher when compared to Gormadash security everywhere he looks he sees guards staring at the distance.
Once
Bill has scanned his surroundings and seen that escaping by running away is rather hard, Elderly woman begins to talk: I'm known as Gora'mana altho I Prefer being called with the tile of Grandmother, you may use either to address me. My son, the leader of this survivor camp is away on hunting trip, so I am in charge.
Bill replied: Grandmother it'll be then, I am known under the name of Chill Bill. Why was I attacked and tied up?
You were sneaking around here, our scouts saw you long before you reached here. We thought you are a spy of Tauren, but Kildor here says you are from that village..(she pauses)... Gormadash, it was called?
Maybe I am from there, but why does it matter where I come from Bill replied
Kildor also said that you are one of those undieable orcs, the one others refer to as Immortals. Be that true?.
It may be truth, but why should I reveal truth to my captors
You are not a prisoner my child, you are free leave but first, listen to what I have to stay
I am Gora'mana, last of the Whisperwind clan surviving elder. You do not probably know, but those warriors who joined your clan are from Whisperwind clan too.
Then are they spies? Is your clan planning to attack us?
No, they left our clan and joined yours and I wish to do that too
What, why?
My child, you have not learned to respected elders and not to disturb when they are talking but I forgive you that, for now. If you remember, I said I'm last surviving elder of Whisperwind clan. Whisperwind clan was simple we were splinter clan, we refused to obey Horde War Chiftain orders to amass an army against The Empire . Instead we chose peace with the empire and we even payed tax to The Empire.
We left our lands long ago when all our shamans and elders were killed by The Empires sneaky plan. Our last surviving trickster, when seeing chaos and fighting that took place between The Horde and The Empire in Telepathic realm, casted a spell of forgetting past on us only elders remembered what took place in the past. He was killed by telepathy shortly after. This means only elder remembered what happened in the past.
During passing years we payed taxes to the Empire and Empire defeated all The Sickness, The Enemy and The Horde. Or so they claim at least, but we were visited by Tauren the Allies of the old Horde. We're attacked by the Tauren, as we refused to stop paying taxes to empire and pay much larger (OOC: ½ of food income) taxes to them, yearly. Truth to be told, we've not seen Represetees of the Empire for over 10 years. But these tax collectors of The Empire only asked for small things 30 warriors (who never returned) or 150 units of leather hides or 100 units of healing herbs and so onwards simple things we could provide and we always did.
But month after we had refused paying taxes to the Tauren our village was attacked and burned to the ground. Some survivors thanks to their luck - made it to your village. Our scouts met these survivors under cover of darkness and some returned here while others swore to be silent about their past. They did not want to come back here but asked us to join with you instead, I disagreed with them back then, but not anymore. Seeing that our hunting trips failed, we have no further options.
This group you see here are last survivors of the Whisperwind clan most come from hunting party who were hunting boars during the time attack took place, some are miners who managed to blockade themselves into mine and find us after attack and some are survivors who fled from the village.
The Tauren salted our fields, they burned our village and surrounding forest down using some black liquid and probably destroyed our mine. They spared no one and many who escaped and returned later, were captured and brutally killed. We do not have anything anymore.
Our village had over 200 villagers, a working mine, fishing fleet and much more. Now we are down to what you see here: 64 survivors, simple leather tents and quickly built houses. Our food income comes from herb gathering, fishing and hunting. (she paused) . We will not survive this winter and I know that I'll not survive this winter even with food and warm fireplace, our elders are not like you are we die eventually.
I beg you: I'll give you a group of villagers. Go to your village and beg them to accept us among them. We will give you everything we have: Our tools, our supplies, our lives, our knowledge.
You are our last chance to survive. We know no other tribe who lives so far up North. We have no builders, no farmers, no expert fishermen, no crafters and not enough supplies to survive winter. All we have are few expert hunter, few miners and many commoners. We also have some leather and little dried meat and fish. I know you have enough supplies to feed us and your own folk, even if both our tribesmen have to survive on ¾ or ½ of rations.
My tribe will join yours and they will listen to what your elders say. I just want them to survive, as does my son.
When Bill reached back to village he told this story to the villagers. A day later a single runner from Whisperwind tribe brought news that The Grandmother has passed away and asked for represtees of the clan to verify it, if they wish.
Most Gormadash villagers do not have an opinion on this matter, therefor they are simple to convince to see things your way. Shamans say that this time, the Whisperwind tribe members tell the truth and most things that grandmother said are repeated by individual clan members.
