The Immortal Mad Scientist

please build the great lighthouse. there's no need to REX since city spot 3 alone can block all the dot mapped land, anyways. So you could go for the wonder after a settler and 2-3 workers with no loss to your expansion plans.

If sal is truly blocked in then you can just leave him for now and get him later with swords and cats or something post lib. I'd highly recommend settling the pig clam spot, working a few cottages and then expanding into the jungle. Not sure if you want to go early IW to clear the jungle, maybe Aesth or alpha and then trade for it...

I'd build a boat to explore, see if the islands give you more.

Too late for a rush.

Expand out peacefully at this point. Both writing and IW are good techs to go for. Skirmishers are good as well, but that's out of your ideal tech path.

i'd go IW -> Writing ...

IW first both for Gems (which should be able to fuel research for some bit) and for a chance of iron, which in turn is a chance for more efficient defense (and Cannons later on)

honestly don't expect you can get GLH, but failure gold aren't the worst thing to have doing the second REX push ... i'd also suggest building a Workboat and prehaps yet another Chariot to explore respectively the south and westen islets and the easten coast which does seem connected

Saladin blocked and the other 2 came by boat and there are unexplored goody huts. I think you just secured a good slice of land for yourself. Don't bother splitting those cows to another city, use that terrain to the fullest. 1N of phant lake and 2S of banana are my votes for cities.

Great Lighthouse would win you the game right there.

Nice game so far mad. That is an intersting number of neighbours. Saladin most of the times I get along nicely with him once you pick his religion. Huayna is an annoyance that you should look to eliminate early he is a threat for the Space Race (Or Science victory as it will be called on CIV5) Joao can beome a problem due to his Imperalistic Trait and might setle on youre continent given the chance. I would go Iron Working and ReX peacefully for now except if Saladin has a Hindu Shrine already built in which case go for the rush:). Mansa does want his shrine ofr the MONEY MONEY MONEY:lol:. I would still go after Iron Working first though Chariot rushing a Protective civ might not be a good ideia. Regarding the Great Lighthouse it is actually nice most of youre cities are actually gonna be coastal. Building it and then the Colossus goes welll with Financial Mansa.

Well done getting the gem city.

BUILD THE GREAT LIGHTHOUSE! And, you'll win the game. Easily.

Forget IW, imho. GLH will pull in more than enough commerce early. Masonry > Writing > Aesthetics.

I'll join the GLH chorus -- definitely still viable, and definitely powerful. If your 1st GP turns out to be a merchant, you can bulb MC and build the colossus.

Don't see the point of going after Saladin pre-liberalism. He's got a religion, so he'll be very easy to get along with; he's a reasonable trader, and he's blocked off from your portion of the continent. You've got a lot of land to fill up now, but you will still probably have watch out for Joao and the Evil Settler-Dropping Galleys of Doom, so you'll still need to move quickly. Keep the area fogbusted lest a billion barb cities pop up out of nowhere in dumb places.

You are Mansa, and you will likely end up with the GLH. Your tech rate is going to be absurd. Consequently, I imagine that you are going to be self-researching techs a bit more than we immortal players might ordinarily be used to; securing trade bait might not be quite as important as it usually is. This gives you the freedom to concetrate on the most pressing techs at hand (in this case, probably IW after writing.)

The Immortal Mad: Wonders and Iron.

The was a buzz in the throne room of Timbuktu. All the councilors were giving advice to which Mansa tried patiently to listen to. However, one subject specifically touched his ears

"More commerce" to which Mansa brain told him "GOLD". Or was that his soul telling him this. Nevertheless, whatever aspect of the Malinese leader's Psychy told him this it was irrelevant because Mansa directed to Malinese researchers to learn Masonry, even at the costs of military.

AS Masonry was constructed and Timbuktu built a lighthouse, chariots continued to scout out the region and in the north finds

ImmortalMadC0000.jpg

That the Portugese are to our north and off the coast. Excellent.

And while Timbuktu begin building the GREAT lighthouse, Mali researched iron working while the city of DeJenne produced the next settler

ImmortalMadC0001.jpg

Yes, seams like an uninspiring, unhealthy jungle swamp area. Hoever given time and patient Mali worker support this can be a valuable city. well placed with ample food, jumbos, and COASTAL!

Soon the Arabian religion of Hinduism spreads to us

ImmortalMadC0002.jpg

Mansa adopts the Hindu faith and keeps track if Saladin get's thr shrine.

The led to increased relations with Arabia and this request

ImmortalMAdC0003.jpg

We have enough settled cities and prefer the extra commerce as cottaging has been on hold.

After furious chopping of forrests in the Timbuktu area by all workers, Mali was able to build

ImmortalMadC0004.jpg

And trade route commerce explodes!

The Portugese have started to settle in the north of this continent so Masa was eager to leverage this new wonder and further expand before Portugal moves into the proper Mali lands. Thus

ImmortalMadC0005.jpg

The whip is cracked in DeJenne for another settler

ImmortalMadC0006.jpg

Hopefully that southern area is closed off to settlement for a good while. However experience tells Mansa that these other leaders may be expanding faster than we think.

ImmortalMadC0007.jpg

Yes, the Arabs have settled around our blocking city via the sea.

As Timbuktu works on another settler, the technology of iron working is completed showing

ImmortalMadC0008.jpg

The we really need to settle that pig/floodplain area fast before the Arabs go around our block!

Mansa wiped his brow and prepared to rest and reflect on what to do next.

But firts the Mali cities

ImmortalMadC0009.jpg

SO I think writing is top of the menu. AFter that I am looking for suggestions. With iron I think skirmishers can be delayed, perhaps alphabet/currency or maybe going straight after metal casting for a shot at the colossus, triemes, and the UB?

I like the colossus idea, you're financial, you will settle coastal on purpose. you are not ind though and didnt see copper?

currency will strengthen your already good trade income.

you will have some small trouble with happy cap as i see it... maybe monarchy should be on priority list too.

Consider expanding to other islands soon to grab more land.

At the very least scout out other lands. Might find someone to get some intercontinental TR with.

If Mad settles on islands that counts as intercontinental trade too, which is worth a good bonus even if it's only domestic. I always make a special effort to find offshore islands to settle if I build the great lighthouse. Not sure if that's optimum bit it seems to make sense.

In this game scouting is still nonexistent round the southern coasts so there may or may not be any nice islands down there. This aggressive blocking strategy is very interesting to watch though - I hope it works out :)

Need a workboat or two to explore the islands on the left to find some foreign intercontinental TRs or some spots to settle yourself. I think its best now to focus on settling every available coastal city, gotta love seeing the gold-per-turn go UP rather than down when settling new cities with the GLH.

I do like the idea of going MC next too though, the UB would be nice with all that extra TR gold. Plus collossus would make coastal 4 (!) commerce which would be huge.

I'd probably head towards currency >> CoL myself. There's a decent chance your 1st GP will be a merchant [can bulb MC if you want it, you might still find copper for the colossus, but not getting it is far from the end of the world -- priesthood will also be a handy tech. Only calendar resource I've seen is bananas].

Explore! Keep exploring both the land and the sea; there's a good chance more good city spots will turn up, also probably a decent number of barb cities around, so small army might not be a bad idea either.

The Immortal Mad: The Second Wonder Question and "UNFRIENDS"

Mansa continued to direct the Mali expansion enjoying the Hindu brothership while trying the ignore the obnoxious Buddhist Inca.

Writing was researched next while the most pressig need for the Mali is addressed

ImmortalMadD0000.jpg

An outstanding city with a vital iron resource. As Mansa see's numerous Arab spears and axes patroling through Mali lands he becomes more concerned about relying on chariots and warriors. Research is directed at hunting, needed to harvest PAcadermian Ivory, followed by Skirmishers for the superior archer unit of the Mali.

With teh city block in place to keep the Arabs and Portugese from expanding south for the moment, a chariot is send exploring the unknow regions. This paid off handsomely for the Mali.

First the city of Gaul was observed

ImmortalMadD0001.jpg

Stone, more floodplains, and soon to be found food source. Almost capital quality and ready fo capture, if we can get there in time. Iron is quickly put on line and Timbuktu begins constructing swordsmen.

Still our exploring chariot's job is not finished

A second Barbarian city, soon to be Mali, is found with a large defending force of axemen. Mansa congrats himself for directing towards archery. He also manages to steal a barbarian worker.

ImmortalMadD0002.jpg

At this point the next technology is researched. METAL CASTING! A chance at the wonder Colossus, triemes, mints for happiness/production/gold.

But that exploring chariots job is NOT done yet as the goody hut to the south gives us

ImmortalMadD0003.jpg

Mansa grins with delight.

However, there is a major problem that has developed which may alter the Mali plans, apparently the Incan are quite upset with our treasures and Hindu faith.

ImmortalMadD0004.jpg

With a few cities still defended by warriors or chariots, a sounder defense (and offense) is needed here. Add that our seafodd is being ravished by Barbarric Galleys, and Mansa has some decisions to make considering

ImmortalMadD0005.jpg

Saved here to think this over.

The next tech to research???

ImmortalMadD0006.jpg

Do we become agressive with construction? Go after the economic techs of currency/Code of Laws/alphabet?? Or trade bait with aesthetics/compass???

The map shows

ImmortalMadD0007.jpg

We can fill out that southern part for a rather large peacetime empire, but we need troops pretty fast to beat out Saladin/Joao from taking those cities.

Techs

ImmortalMadD0008.jpg

Not much to trade yet, and apparently Saladin has researched Metal Casting just as we did. This is a problem as we have no copper while sal does so we may be able to out-produce Sal to the Colossus. We can assemble a fine army with those colossus hammers.

Finally, the cities

ImmortalMadD0009.jpg

So some things to decide?

Next tech order?

Military or Colossus emphasis??

Looks like HC will have to pull off a naval attack if he goes for you. Does he have OB/good relations with Sal or Joao? Their borders might be enough to stall him for a long time.

If he does manage a landing, you are too spread out and coastal to easily defend. Instead, you will probably be better off whipping walls in any city that flashes two lanterns. So build some swordsmen and take gaul and the stone to prepare for those walls.

Did anyone mention you need to get a boat out to explore islands to the west? Oh wait, EVERYONE did.

It's unfortunate that Niani isn't coastal, what with the GLH and all. I realise you wanted to get the iron ASAP, but it pains me a little. :p
