The Mathnerd Administration Years - The Unity Coalition

The Long Silence
Spoiler :
Mathnerd Dissapears (first hint in #4839 he abdicates in #4886), soon afterwards Whosit also vanishes (#4910). With the two main leaders gone the Unity Coalition fall into inactivity. First there is a brief discussion over the chain of command, with Cull assuming command.

Things continue to not happen for awhile. A War Comprimise is reached between Ravus and Arya when he started trying to help in post #5220.

When Mathnerd returned in post #5333 he waited for pictures frst then practised his Direct Democracy untill nearly no-one was paying attention because NOTHING was happening.

President Cull?
Spoiler :
Cull takes over when the two other presidents dissapear. The tensions between him and the opposition leader quickly rise and Cull tries to decalre Arya's group a criminal organization in post #4923 he recants it soon after. But arguement over who was going to sort out our home grown terrorist group the Copperheads continued.

Wonderman - The British Premier
Spoiler :
ilduce had allways been a supporter of wonders but once he had been given control of the British Isles his retoric of pro-wonderspamming took on a whole new level. He made it his goal, as premier of the British Isles, to start at least one wonder there.

Wonders were thus discussed for awhile. post #4711 highlights the wonders probably available. There didn't seem to be any agreement apart from the ease and use of the Collosus and that people would prefer the Aposlastic Palace in english hands then in anyone elses.

Lots of people support the GReat Library and Arya tries to champion the University of Sankore.

The War Plans - Line of Advance
Spoiler :
Now that the English army was trained and had pushed forward there was disagreement over where we should advance next. Some wanted the lush commerce rich Germania while others wanted the production heavy Italy.

With Antium under english occupation the only way the Romans could enter south-east Gaul was through this city. Placed on a hill with a whipped wall many felt secure that it was a prime place to hold off any Roman advances.

Thus a Germanian advance could be a tactical holding action in the south with a strike in the north. While a italian advance was more about winning by overwhelming numbers.

Spoiler War Advance Compromise :
warplan.jpg

A Compromise was proposed in post #5065 combining the desire from all sides for Italy and Germany. The Compromise allowed us to take germany first and then swing around to also take italy. But the sheer weight of so many new cities would need a few terms of peace afterwards...

While nothing was said against this compromise at the time once the pictures were delivered later showing Englands lands and cities people started trying to make their own warplan. Arya put his foot down and demanded that the compromise hold.

President Mathnerd practised his usual Direct Democracy response and help a number of votes.

The Democratic Administration - The Voting Blocs
Spoiler :
Mathnerd started his roll into true democracy by holding votes on all major topics. While perhaps in-efficant it showed the true unified spirit that Mathnerd and his Co-Operative party were trying to put forward

First vote: on the war (post #4723)
1)Make peace immediately
2)Attack Germany, then make peace
3)Attack Italy, then make peace
4)Take all of the Roman Empire

This form of direct Democracy came under attack straight away by Arya, who believed that this was a flawed method of choice because not everyone is as smart as everyone else, or in CIV terms... not everyone is a diety level player. Thus choices would be made worse by the dumb masses.

Once the second vote for the war plan ended in a draw MN tried to force the issue his way. It got worse when people started changing their votes. MN then tried to compromise the compromise.

This hit a nerve with Ravus, he considered himself logical, compromising a compromise made little sence to him. Once he convinced President Mathnerd he dropped the idea and agreed to use the original proposal of invading Germany then swinging round to Italy.

Unfortunatly once he posted the final plan it bacame apparant he had not understood the original proposal properly and when he put it in his own words he had drafted something different. After being corrected he then changed the subject completly and instead tried to start votes on the Heroic Epic city and the Tech Path in post #5842

When that particuler vote finished he placed a new plan in post #5899 but that STILL had the war plan wrong... by this point the only people that had been posting constantly for the past 100 or so posts were MN, Cull and Arya.

Ravus stopped lurking in post #5918 to point out the sheer lunacy of the situation and the fact that it had been over 1000 posts since something significant had happened! He called Unity impossible to manage and that Direct Democracy had caused nearly all players to leave from re-arguing the same point over and over and over again.

Cull in realising what he had helped caused instantly tried to call for a vote of no confidence. While it didn't pass, as it could only be called by the opposition leader, it showed his annoyance at Mathnerd having abused the system. Arya agreed to use his powers to call for a re-election after the first turn-set. Unfortunatly when he dissapeared after the first term it never came to pass...

Mathnerd gave himself a 7 day time limit for his next plan and managed to finish it before Arya could return and organise a re-election vote.

Issues - The Political Winds
Spoiler :
The Monopolitical Bloc
It was the question from the start wether this new powerful coalition could get anything done... There was slight disagreement between Arya and some of the admin, (Cull & Sonereal) over wether the opposition had any strength at all. The once powerful leader Arya made it clear that he believed with him at the helm anything was possible. The LMP stayed officially nuetral in all of this.

Moving the Captial
First brought up by Mechaerik. The Idea was commercially sound as a palace on the mainland would decrease costs but some liked the flavour of having englands captial being London... others also thought the tradeoff from less maintenance wouldn't be worth it as london was the most developed city and thus could make the most use out of the gains of being the capital.

Ireland - Annexation Target or Our Only Friend?
The ideas for taking these cities back arose here. Mechaerik and Arya were some of the most vocal supporters

New Politicians
Captain Fargle joins in post #4926 forms the Progresive Pragmatist Party (PPP)
Spectrite joins in #5026 he asks to be a part of the Co-Operative Party

The Administration Policies
Spoiler :
The Plans for the turnset took many different forms. Ravus attempted to come up with a rough draft during President Cull's brief tenure in power (Post #5585)

When Mathnerd returned he managed to get some pictures of the state of england in post #5603 he then drafted his own plan (Post #5615) While allowing votes on various issues. During this time Whosit returned (Post #5684).

Once that was all cleared up Mathnerd sent the plan premeturly in post #5729... the opposition naturally explodes. LH offers a few more days to organise the plan... more voting commenced...

The Premature plan was sent in post #5821
The Final plan was shown in post #5899 (still the wrong war plan)

Due to the time delay and silence people started assuming the war was over, or at least unimportant, thus down grading it's importance. They started arguing over the plan AGAIN in the in the posts around #5800-#5900

Mathnerd managed to send the plan just moments before Ravus's blowup over the amount of time and voting.

Spoiler The Eastern War Front :
civ4screenshot0205.jpg

England managed to claim Neo and Cumae in the traditional Germania area. Unfortunatly most of the country was building infrastructure and the reinforcements situated in antium, such as they were, had to be used to reinforce the eastern front.

Spoiler The English Empire, The Fall of Rome :
civ4screenshot0206.jpg

The Arabians declared war on the Russians which was proberly what allowed the Romans to organise a defence.

Dissagreement for the turns were mainly over whether England should have produced more constant troops...

ilduce continued his PEACE NOW! Campaign. People argue vigoursly over it not sure wether England could defeat the Romans, but not wanting to allow all of Italy to fall into Russian or Viking hands.

Issues - The German Claim
Spoiler :
Seen in post #5968

Germany's Claims -
Recently, Frederick of the German League has claimed Mediolanum as the cultural centre of the Balkans, and thus his nation's rightful capital. He asks that should it fall to the English they allow him to set up his government there and retain the city under his control. Also, the people of Antium and Neapolis have begun rioting in the streets, seeking to join the Germans, though our analysts say this is likely a ruse to get us to withdraw our forces so that the Romans may return - what exactly is our plan?

Rome Collapsing -
Julius Caesar and his Roman Empire have been reduced by a crippling degree. They have lost almost all of their territory and prestige, their armies are broken, the Balkans, once a bastion of Roman authority, are in open revolt, English troops drive out of Germany and towards Italia itself. The Copperheads are beginning to return to making demonstrations demanding a status quo ante bellum peace, to use the Latin.
What is the administration's stance?

- Lighthearter

Captain Fargle supports giving Medi to germany, Celticfury agreed and pointed out that nearly everyone thought similerly.

Intermission - The Countdown
Spoiler :
After the first term Ravus kept a running countdown of the 7 day limit MN had set himself. He also summed up every Politicians viewpoint to help MN in post #5988

Whosit continued to be a voice of calm in Unity (see post #6010 for a general policy outline)

The Plan for the second turnset was shown in post #6038
It discussed who our allies, rivals and enemies are.

Arya returned in post #6111 just missing MN who had allready sent the plan.

The Ragtag army made it's way to Medi but failed to break the defences. Both sides were decimated and approaching from the north was the viking war machine of many Berserkers and catapults.

Spoiler Foreign Advisor :
civ4screenshot0220.jpg

The turn ended on a low note and with the knowledge the next president would have to make a dramatic decision or stand to end the war or all of Italy would end up Viking. There was also the worrying fact that our friend Khan of the Irish Mongols is now at war with the Russians...

The Remus Proposal
Spoiler :
Just after the last part of the Mathnerd Administration ended we recieved a new issue. Whether or not it could be trusted was another matter...

Agent Remus' Proposals -

"Remus" - a deep cover agent inserted into Rome by Lighthearter within the last decade, has recently informed us that Caesar is throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the battle at Medio. If we can take the city regardless, Caesar might cave and surrender, allowing us to occupy Italia. However, if the Viking deathstack takes the city first, they'll get the same deal. Or we could send the Night Eagles to assassinate Caesar - his chief general, Pompey, is a vehement Vikingphobe and would rather see us occupy the entire Empire then let the Vikings rule in Rome. Howeve,r if we try and fail then the Copperheads will raise hell which knows no bounds. This is a matter for the next president, landing in the middle of the elections, but what do the various candidates propose?

Elections end on Friday.

- Lighthearter

The Election: The Triumvirate Coalitions
Spoiler :
People quickly started discussing the election as soon as the last plan was sent. Interestingly enough it was actually the position of Opposition Leader that was most fought over and disputed. Captain Fargle quickly threw his hat into that ring. Arya fell back on his usual agressive stance and things quickly degenerated into a arguement between Captain Fargle and Arya. Mainly about what makes a good opposition. Cull also started saying he wished to be an opposition leader...

The Monks quickly withdrew from Unity even before the turnset was played and posted up. Showing their dissatisfaction with the coalition and what it had become in quite a harsh way.

Whosit states in post #6164 that if he did get elected he would form a more authoritarian administration where the person voted into power would take true control over events.

Cull disbanded the Ninja-Pirate party and officially asked to be a part of the Imperial Party instead. Post #6173

While some brief discussion started on what could be done with the great people, a in depth look done by Spectrite in post #6191, it came to light that there had been a failed attempt to create a new Coalition named "The Coalition of Freedom". Apparantly the talks between the five parties (Co-Ops, Greens, LMP, Consortium and Monks) had ended badly when a vote had been taken for a leader ending in a draw between Aysee and WIM.

With this breakdown of a followed up Unity there remained no clear power. Everyone just voted for their own party and waited... they knew someone would make the first move eventually.

The First new Coalition formed was between the PPP and the Co-Ops in post #6278. Called the CPS for short this was called The Co-Operative Progressive Society for the Stability and Good Governance of England and her Territories. They wished to create a small middle power block to balance control between the Opposition and the Administration. Their aim was to stop any and all abuses of power. Eventually the Green Party also joined the Coalition.

The Second new Coalition was called The Patriots and was formed in post #6350. It was made up of the Jokers, LMP and Monks. This Triumvirate was based around a balance of power and a agreement to try to get each party into presidential power in succession.

These two coalitions quickly became tied.

Things stayed this was for awhile as the last two unaligned parties weighed their options. Eventually they decided to risk it all and re-formed the old Aegis Coalition from the Imperial Party and the Peoples Consortium of England. In Post #6463 Whosit officially puts himself forward as presidential candidate and confirms the Aegis return.

With the thread now moving again a lot of new players popped up in this election:
Fellow appeared in post #6330, he supported a peaceful style and backed the Consortium and the Green Party.
Dommination a long time supporter re-appeared which caused some shock.

Things quickly degenerated from there as every favour and ally was called in to vote.
Omega jumped on for a short while to vote for the Patriot group (only as a favour to Arya it turned out.)
Civplayah also returned to vote for his party again.
Gruekiller, an old LMP player returned to back his party as well.
Grq09 was brought in by ilduce and voted for the Aegis

It looked like the Patriots were going to win untill at the last second WIM dragged his Green party away from the CPS coalition and joined the Aegis group culminating in a draw between Aegis and Patriot

It was decided thus by a coin flip and Aegis took power in post #6548

The After Election Scandal - ilduce's bid for power
Spoiler :
After the Election ended ilduce tried to say that there had never been a definitive decision on who would be president between him and Whosit. Wether this was true or not it became apparant that the majority of people had assumed they were voting Whosit into power, not ilduce.

After a brief arguement via Private messages between ilduce and Whosit. The Imperials stepped back to see what ilduce could do with power. Things quickly went into uproar as ilduce tried to get people to listen to him. It came close to having to have another election.

Then it came out that ilduce had only been believing he couldn't trust Whosit because he had mis-read a PM from Ravus. There was much shaking of heads and Whosit took the reigns again.

Ahh, another book. Always a pleasure, Ravus. It's also amusing when you refer to yourself in the third person. :p Alas, those non-canon stories... what might have been.

Well, this administration should provide some good fodder for the next book!

Oh, plan was officially sent, by the way. Hopefully Lighthearter can peel himself away from Civ V and squirming babies long enough to build up English hegemony. :D

The plan looks pretty good, Whosit. The Merchantilist policy sounds fairly solid. Though I am a bit hesitant at letting GSpy Cull wander around in the wilderness. Could we possibly get him to explore Arabia?

Wonderful job, Ravus. Keep up the good work!

Whosit, I applaud your judgment on this issue. Thank you for supporting democracy. :goodjob: [party]

BTW, I did not do the opposition actions. If these actions harm England, I will NOT be happy towards whoever launched them.

While there is still technically negotiations to be made, I'm putting myself forward as the presidential candidate

Here is the post that you claimed Whosit put himself forward for negotiations. As it turns out he was admitting that he wasn't definitely going to be our candidate.

Thank you for ignoring posts and making false conclusions. On that matter, a democracy isn't really one when have around 15 immortals, the foundation of an oligarchy, "argue" and make "democracy" for the "people"

BTW, I forgot to mention that the plan looks good.

I feel like I missed an opportunity to say "I find your lack of faith disturbing." :p Well, at least it met with your approval.

This is RP. You have to suspend some RL belief if you want to have fun.

Bull. You just threw definitions out of the window of your purposes and gain.

EDIT: Triple X-Post, and Cull, that's just how politicians do things! :p

Plan's good. I might have slightly more support for better Carthaginian relations, due to me pitying their falling asses in my RTW: EB game...

We actually may want to consider doing more to befriend Carthage in the near future, since they are one of the few Civs who are actually willing to trade technology with us. Unfortunately, we barely have the resources to rebuild our army and build more advanced infrastructure (mmm, Banks!). Since Egypt is the juicier plum (as far as I can tell), sending what Missionaries we can to them seems smart for now.

Anyway, let us all burn incense and send prayers to our benevolent GM, so that we do not fall into a long stretch of "waiting for the turnset spam and squabble." :worship:

Thank you Mr. President for acting on the side of democracy. Your wise actions helped keep the parliament from falling into chaos.
---

Plan looks good, nicely done, I personally would prefer Birmingham GG, but your arguments make sense, and it really isn't that much of a difference, and besides its all moot now.

Nicely done histories, Ravus. Quite amusing the way you wrote about yourself. :p

NOOOOOO! Dang it, now Petey's got a nice launch pad into Britain. Sveck.

Well, I guess the only thing to do right now is to wait. Hopefully the rest of the Irish settlements haven't caved in and are still fighting.

Dang. Well, this just means we need to start militarizing ASAP.

Do you guys think we have enough strength that we can send Peter a "cease and desist order"? Or should we wait and see?

Dang. Well, this just means we need to start militarizing ASAP.

Do you guys think we have enough strength that we can send Peter a "cease and desist order"? Or should we wait and see?

We are militarizing. I think. And, somehow, I imagine that Peter's response would be a hearty laugh. Followed by fire. Lots and lots of fire.

Also, what prophecy?

The Coalition Breakdowns
Wow, just been re-reading some of this stuff.

So we have the Aegis with ilduce dissagreeing with parts of the plan.
We have the CPS officially the disbanding
And we have the Patriots with Arya grounded and probably not here for awhile.

Oh and some opposition actions that could have been done by anyone.

At least i'm not talking in the third person anymore :P

-

Seeing what Whosit is doing with Antium (2 promotion catapult pump) I agree. We're not charasmatic anyway so it should work out better this way. Long term there are more then 2 national wonders for troops so two cities will work. (Later there is the free medic Nwonder and the +4xp Nwonder)

A wonder would be good for that extra push is all... Though i suppose we can allways steal one. (A screen shot of the 5 best cities of the world would be useful)

Looks like the turnset has been played, a lot of things have happened... was it really only a 15 turn or was your plan to do all 30 turns at once?

Ireland has fallen to Russia: Now is it just me or is that something to keep everyone happy, If we take back Ireland and keep it we are fighting the Russians and helping this Irish... slightly. But i doubt we have the troops to launch a proper war. Has Ireland Vassalised? We definatly don't want that to happen.

The Aposalistic Palace has been built in a foriegn land... Hopefully it is Jewish or Hindu, A True Buddist bloc would be catastrophic.
