What Causes The Game To Freeze?

In playtesting my mod, I have not as of yet finished a game without it crashing at various points. So, what causes the game to crash, cos I really need to get this to work?
Before, it has crashed around the late medieval and early industrial eras (this mod follows along the same sort of tech trees, but way bigger, as the standard game), and has also crashed before upon founding a city (though I put that down to too many cities on the map) and capturing a city (no idea what caused that either).
Help please?

I can share with you some of the root causes I've come across for in game crashes.

1. corrupted or otherwise bad terrain or resource pcx. The game will crash when you try to view an area of the map that contains a resource or terrain type where the corresponding pcx file is bad. [You'll get a crash to desktop without warning or error message]

2. incorrect format song in soundtrack [assuming you're using a custom soundtrack for your background music. You crash/freeze without warning or error message]

3. bad palette in a unit flic [as soon as the suspect unit is built (by you or the ai) you get a crash without warning or error message]

4. bad or corrupt pcx in tech chooser folder. [You will crash straight to the desktop when trying to view the techtree.]

Hope this helps, if I remember more I'll share.

georgestow, we had nasty freezes in early SOE-testing by a corrupted unit flic (the *%& Fiat 3000 tank).

For other causes of freezing for a civ 3 mod you can read a lot in the CCM preview thread (from blanc lines in the city lists to nasty conflicts of units with the wheeled/unwheeled flags due to a bad programming by Firaxis). That mod was in the prebeta for about one year due to tons of freezing problems.

Crashes without a message are mostly caused by graphical problems.

Klkl. I found the main problem this time (look at the 'Bobby' thread in the units forum). But for other problems, I'll check out the CCM preview thread, thanks. =D

Good that you`ve found the reason why. :goodjob:

But I think it`s time to share this as well :
Working on my terrain sets ,I`ve found out that using RGB files has NOT my game made crash. It has only givin` me black boxes on the map. Quite strange ,I think.

The first time I saw the black boxes/fields in the Editor. But crazy scientist like I am ,I`ve launched the game despiting them. Waiting for a crash or message. But nothing ... (except for the black)
