EDIT March 12 2003: I soon plan to get all of these common misconceptions and place them here in the orriginal post. More updates as follows.

I would like to start a common misconceptions thread so we who know the game would no longer need to dispell them, and so those who never even thought to ask now know something new.

I'll start with this one:

Pikemen do not get a bonus when defending against Horseback attackers. This was only in civ2 and no longer exists. No other units have this nonexistent ability either. (Figures huh)

Galleys can in fact cross the Ocean in the default game once you get Navigation. Even before that, there's a 50/50 chance that they won't sink each turn.

1) Science buildings do not do what the civilopeadia says -- unless there is only one science building in a city.

Say you would produce 12 science beakers without any science buildings. Then a library does indeed increase research by 50%, so with a library you would get 12+6=18 beakers. However, if you then add a university, it does not increase science by 50% of 18, or +9. It only adds +6.

When are they going to fix these descriptions in the 'pedia?

2) See "the complete cheat guide" thread

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27273

for dilusory "ai cheats" (and some factual ones too)

City improvements that increase commerce or production by a certain percentage (factories, Iron works, Banks, SETI, library, etc.) do it off your base commerce or production.
Therefore, if you have a city that makes 30 science beakers, and you get a library, it will become 45. When you get a University, it becomes 60, not 67-68.

Edit: Seems we were writing this at the same time:lol:

Double edit: Or more rather I didn't check to see that there were more replies seeing as these are hours apart, however, these facts hold true with factories and power plants as well as libraries. So remember, even the the 'pedia says Newtons doubles your city's science output, it only adds an extra 100% of the base...

(More or less in response to PinkyJen's question).

Foritfying increases defense by 25%
A fortress increases defense by 25%
Remember, these increase base defesens so (ignoring terrain bonus's here, which are not normally to be ignored) infantry fortified in a fortress will have 15% and not around 17%

Does fortifying units improve defense?

Fortifying units gives a 50% defense bonus. Units on hills get a 50% bonus. Units on mountains get a 100% bonus. If the attacker is attacking across a river, you get a 50% bonus. Cities above size six give a 50% bonus to their defenders, and cities above size 12 give a 100% bonus. City walls give 50% bonus for cities BELOW size 6. All defense bonuses are cumulative.

Marines ignore defense bonuses, I think. I'd like someone to verify this.

CG

Attacking across a river is 25%, not 50%
I guess I'll lay out all the defensive bonus's right here:

10% for standing on plains, grasslands, deserts, and tundra.
25% For standing in forests, jungles, standing on a fortress, defending across a river, or just plain fortifying.
50% for being on a hill, being in a walled town, or in a city.
100% standing on a mountain or metropolis.

Like CG said, they stack (but all only add to the base defense).

Also, I doubt marines ignore defensive bonus's, as it's not a flag in the editor nor have I seen that anywhere else.

Fortified ships get no bonus

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

That you can play "just 3 turns."

Civ2 I believe it was 50%, but I don't really know for Civ3, I've heard anywhere from 50% to no bonus at all, that fortifying is merely the same as sentry.

Despite the common theme running through several threads, it is possible for a Modern Tank to defeat a Spearman!

Fortress gives 50% IIRC.

Next: There is no bonus for attackers, whether they attack from a mountain, a hill or flat terrain.

I think the flag is Amphibious, and it only ignore defensive bonuses when it attacks from sea. But I don't know if it is a part of the game, good Q, for friday perhaps.

That pollution on the ground causes global warming. It does not. It may degrade the tile it is on, but that's it. The 'triangles' cause both pollution on the ground and global warming.

That it is impossible to use Communism or Monarchy and the only way forward is Republic and then Democracy. Damn I hate that one
