Greatest book ever written?

I'm starting to think D/L now too, but I'll answer the question.

It ain't literature but in my opinion it's the best book:

Lord of Chaos, by Robert Jordan

Definite proof that this isnt Rodgers. He can't read.

Moby Dick by Mellville
Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck
or the Electric Kool Aid Acid Tests by , ok ok but it was a fun book none the less.

"The Liar" comes to mind.

I'm amazed that none have mentioned the second most popular book in the world; J. R. R. Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings.

Because the book is really long, takes ages to read and isn't everyone's favourite book. The Wheel of time series is very good and the discworld books are good too especially for light reading.

long? Half of the books i read are longer than lotr.

I dont know whats the greatest book ever written, becorse i havent got the time to read them all.

Sorry what I meant by long, are the sections between the bits where things happen...

The books I've enjoyed most were Simon Heffer's biography of Enoch, and Macbeth. As for the best book, I'll go for the Bible, closely followed by a collection of my posts here, soon to be published at a very reasonable £19.99, available from any good bookshop.

I like the whole Left Behind series. If i had to pick one, i would pick Desecration (a title from within the series)

Long has nothing to do with great. For example:
Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, The Stranger, The Old Man and The Sea, The Pearl. Short, sweet(or bitter) and very poingnant.

The Bible! The Greatest (and most important AND most read) Book in the World!

Other than that,

Rascal

A somewhat short and very cute book about a boy with a pet racoon. :goodjob:

Aside from a religious point of view, the Bible. Not only for impact, but the narrative style of the Gospel was ahead of its time. The concept of telling one story from four different perspectives sounds more like a modern "project" then a 2000 year old work.

Otherwise, Shakespeare.

1984. Describes communism perfectly.

Orwell's book comes out of the desilusionment of Communism, but it treats Totalitarism in general. INGSOC is has no doctrine, rather it's the very doctrine. 1984 anticipates what would happend if a Totalitarian regime would take over and would be allowed full control over humans and their emotions and thoughts...

Some ideas to throw around...

The issue I have with the Bible(and there are some very fine tales to be told in that book) is that it was written and edited by so many different folks. Yeah it is a culturally signficant book, and the most popular, but there were too many editors interpreting one author.

Although, no one actually said that the "Greatest Book " had to be written by one person.

Me personally none and its not the most important......

and a source would be nice

I like that one chapter... Jim begat Bill, and Bill begat Dave, and Dave begat Larry... On and on and on for pages and pages! Whooo! Good stuff! :goodjob: Sarcasm? Who, me?

I read quite abit but there is still plenty out there for me to read. As for greatest book ever, impossible to answer. I could create a list of course, but people have started already on that so...
