Why doesn't Civ use a hex grid instead of square? Why haven't the designers changed this yet?

Would this be mod-able, or is that just crazy talk?

Civ's always been sqaure (or iso, technically). Why change? What's the advantage?

I think it's more "natural" movement, more flexible.

Keeping a workable city radius of 2, you'd only lose 2 workable tiles.

With squares, moving diagonally moves you much further than moving up/down, left/right.

Yeah, it would be great if the game used hexagons instead of diamonds. Unit movement, cultural borders, placement of rivers and city radii would look much less artificial. Besides, the true shape of strategy is hexagonal.

Another problem this would fix is the unnatural continents. Everything looks so blocky in Civ IV. It wasn't a problem in III, but I can't stand the look of the continents now. Also, mountains have always bugged me. Mountain ranges have always been impassable except for the rare passes. In Civ, mountains have NEVER been a nuisance towards expansion. Hex grids would make it easier to block passages because it would require less mountains to do so. As it is now it requires 3 mountains in an L shape to block movement. In a hex grid it would only take 2 and it would look more natural.

Wow, very good point Mango... I've never thought about that. It would also improve fortresses in this aspect too.
