I know that most of you guys out there probably know that when you kill a civ (meaning taking there last city, and making sure they have no settler walking around) all there remaining units disappear. Well, my idea is that when you destroy a civ from the game, all the units that were of that civilization become a non-nationality civ that could act as barbarians, just pillaging, killing workers, and being an overall nuisance. This is because it is kind of stupid that as much as 20 or more units can just disappear.

What da ya think?

Yeah, I think that's cool. They could still be marked as belonging to the Civilization they were from (ie it would still say Chinese, English.. etc) but they would be barbarians, and act like them.

It is strange that they just disappear -- but then, the game isn't exactly real life is it!

Not really logical, esp for those advanced units like MAs, MIs etc. Such units in real life would need massive support fr the home country. Once the owning civ disappears, such units would be cut off fr their base of support and shld stop functioning effectively as large military formations.

Maybe downgrading them to guerillas or something, once the civ is killed. ;)

The downgrading is a good idea. Especially to guerilla's. And for the middle ages, maybe to longbowmen since they don't need and rescources. And for the ancient ages, possibly to horsemen or archers for the same reason.

I think they should be made mercenaries to your´s or others civ.

mercenaries would be cool, that way those MI's MA's would pay their upkeep by the hiring civ.

Mercenaries might be an interesting way for the units to avoid the unrealistic vanishing, but I think that they would have to be redeployed from their employer's capital. It would really suck to have one of your enemies hire the Stack of Doom that was sitting next to your capital just as you eliminated the other civilization, banking on the fact that you would win the race to capture the city so that they could not capture (and probably raze) your capital.

I dont really like the merecenary idea. Seems slightly too strange to me. I like the downgrading idea much better.

Mercanaries is a good idea, except you should be the only one to buy them and if you dont, they become barbs or guerillas!

It's like the 'ol CivII partisans. I always liked (ok, sometimes I HATED it) this idea. I think down grading would be cool.

I truly hated the Civ2 Partisans, so skip this idea please.

Yeah, I like the downgrading idea - but no mercenaries, please!
I didn't really like the partisans in Civ2 either, but they appeared for any captured city (after a certain tech - communism? - was reached, IIRC; and only above a certain size?). Having the existing units remain (downgraded) only when the whole Civ is destroyed is a much better idea.
Good one, Wildfire!
