My people never gave me a palace !!!

It's true: I started a new game with Germany (of all the times I've faced them in Civ, I'd never played them) and immediately got into the idea that I'd build the Gothic Style palace. So enamored was I, that I didn't notice I wasn't getting any palace additions...

So here it is in the late 16th century, and I'm still ruling from this cave. It doesn't even have a lawn, my cave. So... short of starting all over again (a thought I don't relish, even for a spiffy cave with lawn), is there something that can be done to correct this?

And has anyone suffered this same indignity?

For the record, I restarted from the insertion point of that game; I have a habit of saving the 4000BC beginning, in case I ever want to try again. It worked fine, and I got my palace immediately. So I ask my fellow Germans, "What did I ever do to you?", but I get no response. Not even a cave. Oh well. Please help.

P.S. Could not settling on my first turn have upset some cosmic balance? Sort of a civilizational one-time offer?

Oh, just saw that you are a long-time lurker ;)

It is possible to disable the palace function via the preferences (ctrl+P ingame), maybe it was due to this setting?

Otherwise I don´t know how you could play this long without palace upgrades. Maybe you accidentially skipped the notifications?

Btw, the exact circumstances needed to get a palace upgrade are widely unknown - even around this forum! Personally, I don´t think the initial settling has anything to do with it, though.

Maybe you should concentrate on winning the game and stop worrying about the palace. :D

Yeah, this has happened to me occasionally. Pressing one of the F keys (F9, maybe) will bring up the palace.

I think it must have been the initial "Listen up you maggots! I'm the boss and anyone who says otherwise will get a taste of my club!" speech you gave!

Bragger :P
This has happened to me also - mainly on mid-eastern countries. [ ottomans , arabs, hitties ] Its more of a recent issue though - before I read through the war academy I always got palace upgrades [ not implying anything - just painting a timeline ].

As for just playing the game? The palace is your pride - ! Your painting of your peoples content for your work/opression! Little... *cough*

Velsing... that's funny. I guess that's what I'm trying to do, but that damned evasive palace is just so... well, evasive. Got to see the palace view with the F-key, but my only option is to exit the screen w/o adding improvements. Even in previous games, I have forstalled putting palace improvs. on until later with no ill effect. Just seems like a horrible glitch. (Which in fact makes my ruler homeless, so I guess its a hoboible glitch. Hmmph.) Haven't tried the Ctrl-P yet, so I'll try that next.

and Genghis Khev---> You're killin' me here, just killin' me.

and Lord Emsworth--> That's hitting below the belt. Try and keep those gloves up. :)

I love the palace in Civ III (Why the heck isn't it in IV?) but I still have no idea what triggers the creation of new sections.
Does anyone have a list of what you have to do to trigger a new section to be built?

Maybe you are satisfied to hear that I have the problem too, huh?

Possible sources:
1. GOTM mod
2. Playing with no Barbarians? If I am not totally mistaken then the first upgrade usually comes with your first win against Barbs. So, no barbs, no first upgrade. (???)

Other than that :(

I haven't got a list, but here are some examples:

Destroy your first barb camp. Probably your first part.
A great rush of happiness from new luxuries.

Heya,

With #1 i'm not to sure...but with #2, i have played with no barbs and stil gotten palace upgrades. So #2 musn't apply.

I generally thought when you had a happy populous, you got palace upgrades. I guess the same would apply with other "feats".

Cheers ,

hah, that's nothing =)
I had Civ3- Conquests 1.0 - it didn't have a palace at all :P neither did it show the current year and there was no aireal view(in none of the game types) and I couldn't change preferences :P whatever I did there, it had no effect in game :P

but, I fixed my horrible problem by downloading the latest patch =)

What, no palace in Civ4? Stupid...
BTW, where could I find some pictures of the different types of palace? I never finished one! I'm just curious how the Greco-Roman, Mid-Eastern, Far-Eastern and American palaces look like. I already found the Gothic one :).

I have had the same problem as many of the above mentioned peoples.
It is totally randomized with some exceptions. When you destroy your first barbarian camp their is a very low percentage chance of getting one.
When you add new luxuries there is a slightly higher chance. When you destroy your first enemy city or win a battle in with unique unit their is an even higher chance. Golden Age also increases chances. These factoids i am not 100% sure on this but through about 20 games i have kept track of this and this appears to the only consistency. Then again. it may all be a fluke.

I once rule over the entire world (and will rule even more, as I've began constructing the Alpha ship when i quit) cas the great Persian king of kings...from a cave!!!

Is there a mod somewhere where you can play as AL-Quade :p

Hahhahahaha
______________
AskReeves has a point - those seem to be the only times I get them either.. I Just got one:

I have 3 cities, 4 workers, Babylonians, Despot[ there shunned government ] But I had a warrior take out a Barb camp and a bowman take out 3 barbs in the same turn and they went nuts - two upgrades ^^

By the way - Mirc - If you want I'll post the Greco-Roman one I'm working on.
