Would you support it?

OK - It might not be practical, but imagine the consequences.

If you had the chance to 'erase' religion and make the populations of all nations secular - Would you?

Tell me the reason why you would retain or erase religion!

Worldwide ban on religion, worldwide war.

You are insane ;). I would be against it and I would fight for the Christians.

Noone is to say what I can or cannot think or believe. A world wide ban would be the end of democracy and freedom.

Whilst your thoughts on religion are pretty obvious, Curt, mine are as follows:

Religion has a purpose for those that need it.

Now I won't be drawn into any debates on the excesses of religious zealots, but in every-day life, there are some people who need religion for whatever reason. I do not consider myself to be one of them, but if it helps more people than it hinders (talking mainstream here), then it should remain.

Retain. I don't feel an urge to ban all things I disagree with, a bit more open-minded than that...

Curt, why can't you be tolerant against religions.

There are no religios people here saying we should convert everyone by force are they? Why can't you be just as tolerant as religios people.

The Jehova's withness who comes by every sunday doesn't even want to convert people by force.

Religion indeed has a purpose for those who need it. Nothing will or can prevent that type of religion. That would be silly.

But it is, quite obvious to me, that the freedom of religion is abused. Freedom of religion should be: Freedom of personal religion.

A ban on mixing up religion and politics would be perfectly ok to me.
When political views are based on religion, appearently religious people are trying to enforce their religious rules to others.
That is a very sad thing, yet it seems acceptable in modern western democracies.

Actually I would be with the religionists on this one even though I'm somewhere between agnostic and atheist. If people want to believe in a god, how am I to tell them they can't?
First you ban something I don't care about (like religion). maybe next time you will ban something that does affect me...

What if a religious majority sais gays can't marry? Or that euthanaesia is illegal?

In my book that is nothing but christian fascism*, conducted by the CDA in Holland until 1994. They simply did enforce their religious views on all people in Holland.

*So, now I have abused both the term communism and the term fascism ;) .

I'm with you General Curt!!! You're our Leader, show us, the mindless slaves, the Light!

Why would I ban religion(assuming that I could do that)?
To free people's minds, what else? To stop this "believe and don't research" plague. To make people to believe in their own physical and mental strengths; To believe in themself more without having to depend on some "higher and unseen power".
To stop the indirect/direct discrimination of races depending exclusively on their religion.
To understand that people make the laws, NOT Gods.
To make people CARE about other people with different religion(would Christians care about if Muslims are poor or vice versa?)
To stop them from being ARROGANT: they say; "Only my God is the only one true God".

I would always oppose fanatics religious zealots, including authoritarians atheists trying to enforce their own kind of inquisition.

No Alexander!
It is to prevent people from forcing their 3000 year old rules on me! A nobel cause, I think!

No more than the Labor party enforced their Socialist facism upon all people in Holland.

Their view where just supported by a majority in the parlement. It doesn't matter if their inspiration came from the Bible or from Das Kapital by Marx.

It's called Democracy Stapel, not Fascism :)

True. Religions freedom is not differentiable from freedom of expression. If one goes, so will the other.

I don't see why having religion influence one's views is any different from having anything else influence them. Your opinion is your opinion and it really doesn't matter how you reached it. And if enough people share your opinion then you can enact a law about it. That's democracy.
