Oki first, I was a very bad player of civ before reading all the stuff out there, so thx to you, fanatics ^^
Second, I'm french so, sorry for my bad english.

Here we go, and I hope nobody wrote this tip ;):
I was playing with settlers factory since I've knew it and did somewhat well with it on upper lv. MM is sometimes important but I wanted for some game (ie most of them actually, I'm became too much addicted with settlers factories :D) those 5 damned foods with granary... Agri civ don't have very much trouble with this, so I used to take them more often than non-agri.

On my last game, I took the Chinese people, demi-god continent, trying to fight my way (in Roman territory with Mongol alliance, thx). Chine isn't an agri civ but Indus/militarist was good for this goal. I started on a cow and after moving and sitting the settler.. a second cow, that's cool, let's do the settlers factory in capital :)

Beijing before.jpg

Oki, 10 shields at 5 pop so i've made a barrack and build 1 warrior and 1 settler every 4 turns, a very good settlers factory.
The capital was oki but cores cities need lot of works with all those jungles, and then *tilt* :à)
Bamspeedy said irrigate one, mine the other, but there is a trick... irrigate BOTH:

Beijing after.jpg

Yes, 6 food, that's more than needed but you could imagine where I go. I just let one turn with 6 foods and the other with 4. And, here is the point, Canton could have 4 food every 2 turns instead of always 2 !!

Food before:
Beijing: 5 - 5 - 5 - 5
Canton: 2 - 2 - 2 - 2

Food after:
Beijing: 6 - 4 - 6 - 4
Canton: 2 - 4 - 2 - 4

So Beijing grow like before but Canton gain 3 food/turns instead of 2, +50% :p

[edit: I realised this is even better:

Beijing: (6-4)-(4-6)-(4-6)-(6-4)-(4-6), and repeat.. not very explicit :D
But that's mean:
Canton: (2-4)*-(4-2)-(4-2)*-(2-4)-(4-2)* and repeat
(* means 4-2 or 2-4... it's same) (bold mean pop+1)
more understandable:
Canton: 2-4-4, 2-4-2-2, 4-4-2: no food wasted !

It's easiest to micromanage because you just have to look on both box to figure out where you are in the cycle.
Example 1:
Beijing's box is empty
Canton have 6 food: need 4 foods, so Canton take the cow.

Example 2:
Beijing's box is empty
Canton's box empty too: both could take the cow... Perhaps the workers factory if the settlers factory is at 5 pop and need 10s for warrior.

And so on, you can't go wrong if you change every turn the cow and looking at both boxes.

So, Canton don't grows simply like a 3 foods (4turns with granary) but 2 times like a 4foods and only 1 time like a 3foods town... ie:
Canton grows: 3 turns!, 4 turns, 3 turns! and repeat...I remember you that without this trick, Canton initially grow always in 5 turns ;)
/end for this edit]

So if you have 2 cows with your non-agri civ, just irrigate both and another core town will have a boost croissance (free workers factory...)

More than that, if you think you need 2 cows for a 4-turns settlers factory, you're true, but for 2 4-turns settlers factory (or with one 2-turns workers factory) you just need... 3 cows/wheat :p

Dumb rule: never mine if you could have on a tile +1food in despotism with an irrigation because you have enough food: share the tile with another town. You are excuse if you mine a 8 wheats city or lot of flood plain and a cow...etc ;à)

Oki the warrior has disapeared from Beijing but I hope to find a BG under marshes to remake it.

Thanks for reading, and I hope this will help. :)

A variation on your variation still that still allows you to get the warrior and a settler in your capital is if you went from size 4 to size six, going 4-6-4-6, in that order, in food. You would be able to use the free forest to get the extra two shields for the warrior on your growth from 4 to 5, and at 5, on the turn Canton is using the irrigated cow, use a forest and I believe you will have enough shields for the settler. Not sure though.

Huuu yeah, I was wondering how it could be possible with this setting but didn't think about the pop up 4->5 :)
I try it now thx ;)

edit: ouch, with the new trick in Canton it can't be done regularly :à/
Imagine the MM... :D
I hope for a BG on marsh to be able *sometimes* to make it. It depend of the first turn with 5pop (settler come out): if Canton needs 2 foods, the capital needs to take the 6 foods now, so it can't make the warrior.

So I keep the 5-7 pop to have the gold :à)

/me keep the 4-6 pop for a 1 turn warrior trick in mind for another game, thx Tomoyo ;)

[re-edit: Oki there is only one time each 5 couples where Beijing NEED both cows when box is empty: when Canton have 8 foods in his box, the 4 turns: (...-2)-(4-2)-(2-...)

So that's mean, in 20 turns:
beijing: 5 settlers + 4 warriors
pop: 5 to 7
Canton: 6 workers + 14 warriors (it depends if there is 10 shields at pop 6)
pop: always 6

In 20 turns: 5 settlers/6workers/18 warriors with 2 towns, only 2 cows and a non-agri civ...It's not bad ;)

Irrigating all possible food bonuses is amazingly powerful. The trick isn't exactly new (I stole it off of other GOTM players myself), but it takes some insight to discover it for yourself. Congrats. :)

Argh "charette" like we say in France ^^
Oki anyway "strategy & tips" is a good place for it ;)

I've lost this chinese one and remake a good with France, sid archip, 1 cow, 3 wheat, irrigated all exactly... With those 4 tiles I managed to make 3 factories when Agri civ make only 1 more! Agri-civ is not "that" powerful; I think I have lost the addiction :D. In the case of France, it's cool to have fast workers/less corruption ;)

Yes it's a good rule. The only exception I figure out is when 2 foods bonus are stuck on an impass with coast. Probably irrigating both don't boost anything so mine one is the solution.

I edit the post for Canton: 6 workers and 14 warriors (1/turn for 20 turns)
So it's 5 settlers/6workers/18 warriors with only Capitale + a 10 shields core city at pop 6 (2cows and non-agri civ)... You need a second settlers factory to keep the upkeep down :D

If the core city don't produce 10 shields, you could make it the settlers factory and the capital stay at 6 pop for warriors/workers with his 10 shields.

Or you could make a spear/bow+worker (30shields) in the 3 turns grow, and 3 warriors+worker (40shields) in the 4 turns. So that's 4 spearmen, 6 warriors and 6 workers only for the workers factory (20 turns)

So, ideally (ie: two 10s cities) 5 settlers/6workers/4spearmen/10warriors every 20 turns.
If only 1 city at 10 shields it's: 5 settlers/6workers/4spearmen/6 warriors (only 4 warriors less)

(5th or 6th edit ^^)
It's laughing how powerful it is. Each time you plant a city, you have already 1 worker, 1 spear and 1 (even 2 with luck on BG) warrior for it. With the capitale and one core city sharing 2 cows.. What the hell could you do with your others cores cities.. :D

If you founded on one of them (the one SE-SE from the whale) and ICSed, you could use all of them effectively by irrigating them, minus the one built on.

The dots on cows (except the one I said was to be founded on) are being worked by the corresponding dots not on cows.

Wow... You could make a 4-turns settlers factory 10-12 with this lol

Perhaps 2 temporals cities (on river) in the radius of the capital :/

edit: crossing post with tomoyo :)
Yes, perhaps ICS... never did it and probably won't do it ^^
If you want space between cities, I think it's good to settle temporarly on the green, orange, and blue dot.

Yes looking back at it I could have done better, but I rushed at the time and didn't build the next towns close enough. It never occurred to build towns on the cows.

I'm not that used to 6 cow starts, and should have planned a bit more carefully. I seem not to have played beyond 530bc.

I think 2 turn settler factories aren't possible in practice: 10fpt is easy enough but the shields are short. A one turn worker factory was possible at size 5 though so maybe I should have tried that.

I have had duel pumps before. Instead of 6-8-7-9 shields in your second one, you just need 7-9-8-10, getting one shield corrupted each turn (build really close to capital). Considering that at size five you only need two or three BGs and your food bonuses to pull this out...

Why could you have 3 or 4 cows? Is this map made by yourself?

But it is possible. I have seen one and only one randomly-generated six-cow start.

Yes, 3 or 4 cows are not "so" really lucky. Perhaps every 50 starts you have that.
Anyway 6 cows/3wheats/2games around rivers is not lucky. It exceeds the luck like the moon a mountain. It's not the same register ^^
So ALL those cows had to be stuck on coast because Murphy is born one day.

Anyway nice start :p

edit: what about moving the settler 2 times in the beginning? Coastal/river capitale? It's something I never do, but you could grow like a crazy here so it's not that bad.
