I was wondering why designers cut the age of Civilization in 2000 AC. I would like to propose someone creates a MOD to contiunue past that. Some of the events in near future. I would like to see how nations will cope with disappearing oil, and other resourses. Economic crash of peak-oil, Global warming effects and civil unrest due to starvation and such. Althow its not a given, that is most likely outcome of our world anyway. And don’t point to the zombie scenario, which is just too silly and unrealistic.
How about managing your empire thru the devolution. Reestablishing the old sustainable ways of agroculture and such. Maybe making farms produce -2 food to show the absence of farming machinery and fertilizers ( oil products). Also , would be fun to see shorelines being flooded by rising seas.

What do you guys think?

Take a stab at it. Sounds like it might be interesting.

The idea sounds interesting, but i am not sure how much fun that would be. And in the end Civ is about fun.
If i want End-of-Days mood i turn on CNN.

I know there is a modder out there creating such a thing. At the end of the game it takes into account whether you were more of a warmonger or peacemonger. If you're a warmonger you get the appoctolyptic game where things are all messed up, or if a peacemonger you go into a sort of utopian game. Haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like what you're looking for.

Also, I'm probably wrong, but wasn't there a MOD for BTS that came with the game that has the options you are looking for? Afterworld or something like that?

All resources can be exhausted after they've been in use for a while. Write a script that gives every resource a random possibility of being exhausted after it's been developed for 50 turns or so. Make it a low probability possibility everywhere.

Wasn't this a possibility in a previous Civ? I seem to recall iron and coal mines giving up the ghost.

Yep. Resources could (and did) expire.

In Civ IV, the longer you mine a hill, there is a slight chance that a resource can appear there.

I'm not sure where you're getting this, but I've seen no indication this can be done. There's no line anywhere in Bonusinfos that would indicate a limited amount of time for a resource. You're probably thinking of Civ 3.

Units would have to disappear when the resource does. As it is now, I can continue to use my existing tanks if I lose oil. I just can't build anymore.

This Idea sounds interesting...

^^ I think it would be more challenging if the units stayed but loose their movement points (either all their points or get drastically reduced).

Yet there should be a replacement for fuel... like Hydrogen or Nuclear reactors (for ships) and an upgrade cost to make the units usable again (representing the change of engines).

Oil based units should have some turns to get back into the homeland after oil dissapears.

watch Fox News then, Fair and ballanced  they ll make u think u live in a Free country:mischief:

In some of the posts, some mention Global Warming. I have never seen any evidence of GW. In earlier Civs, whole cities would basically go under the uselessness of GW. I never use Coal Plants so that many be why I never see it. I wait til I can get Three Gorges or use nuclear plants -- which, coincidentally, never melt down.

Tanks don't need oil in order to work. Just ask the Germans. During WWII they figured out a way to make diesel from coal. I even heard where the Russians ran some of their trucks on wood chips.

The point is even if we "run out of oil", we will discover another way to achieve the same result whether its via a related technology, or something new and unexpected. Environmentalists are neo-Luddites and, quite frequently, anti-God (or godless, if you prefer).

If you want, you can think of Future Tech as covering those as yet undiscovered oil replacement technologies.

I was suggesting a modification ;)

We're already doing it. We have things like Bio-Diesel that can be made from recycled cooking oil. And Hydrogen is just around the corner as a major fuel source. People who claim that society will collapse when the oil runs out are just being doom-sayers. There's lots of alternatives, it's just that so far it's still cheaper to get our oil from the ground, rather than from some sort of manufacturing process.

Someone watch the History channel last night ("crude")

It would be cool. In my personal mod I got rid of oil except rar instance (1 or 2) from showing up. the rest of time you have to put in an oil well and hope you get a random discovery. Next I' working on corporations that give you the bonus for oil. When oil runs out I think you can make a tech that affect improvements so I'm looking at doing that or the events...
