AEGIS Cruiser

First, what AEGIS is:

Aegis, which means shield, is the Navy’s latest surface combat system. Aegis was designed and developed as a complete system, capable of engaging in simultaneous warfare on several fronts -- air, surface, subsurface, and strike. Anti-Air Warfare elements include the Radar System AN/SPY-1B/D, Command and Decision System, and Weapons Control System.

So why the name, AEGIS?

an operational requirement for an Advanced Surface Missile System (ASMS) was promulgated and a comprehensive engineering development program was initiated to meet that requirement. ASMS was re-named AEGIS (after the mythological shield of Zeus) in December 1969.

So there you have it. Aegis is a mythological reference to the shield of Zeus, and is not an acronym.

Excellent Post, Maleficence.

You summed up the info succiently, and in fact you answered a question that I, too, had been wondering about ... what acronym did AEGIS stand for?

Now we know it doesn't stand for one, a rare case in this situation.

Maleficence, i find your name very amusing ;)

If you are indeed trying to state mal efficience, as in bad efficience, then your misspelt name is very apt!!

If not, then just what exactly does it mean?!

Anyways, great summation to what AEGIS means. :)

Cheers

Thanks alot...that word that they put in all capitols AEGIS was bugging me...I just thought it HAD to be an acromym. I couldn't stop trying to figure it out. I kept guessing "Air Earth Ground Interceptor Submarine" .....and on and on...... I couldn't come up with anything that made sense.

Main Entry: mal·fea·sance
Pronunciation: "mal-'fE-z&n(t)s
Function: noun
Etymology: mal- + obsolete feasance doing, execution
Date: 1696
: wrongdoing or misconduct especially by a public official

Which if the mispelling is really deliberate does make the handle very amusing!

Another sad example of how generals and bureaucrats insist on turning a perfectly good name into an awkward acronym, even if it wasn't an acronym.

Well, as far as the meaning of "maleficence":

It's derived from the latin maleficentia, from maleficus which itself comes from mallus, which means evil.

The dictionary reveals the following:
ma·lef·i·cence Pronunciation Key (m-lf-sns)
n.
1. The doing of evil or harm; mischief.
2. Harmful or evil nature or quality.

SO there you have it. It didn't have anything to do with public officials or lack of efficiency :P

The main reason I adopted the name is because that is the name of the evil queen in the old version of Disney's "Sleeping Beauty".

If any of you saw the movie there's a part where she turns into this big black and purple dragon. So anyways, Disney came out with a really great toy rendition of this dragon. A special someonone gave me that dragon as a gift, and I took a liking to it, and the name just stuck. :crazyeye:

edit: gave wrong movie name =O phear that :D

As a former Submariner, you really should just think of it as a target. There are after all only two types of boats. Submarines and targets!!!! Who cares what they call it.

SSN-688 USS Los Angeles;)

AEGIS is the shield of Greek God Zeus.Primary mission of an AEGIS Cruiser is to protect carriers from air and submarine threats. In CIV3 it's a joke. The crew member of the "Los Angeles Class" submarine above can count himself lucky, survival probability of a Russian submarine (even an Alpha) against an AEGIS is below %10. :D
