PTW Questions: Capture ships

I just got out of my finals and my brain is frazzled but I thought up a question last night when I should have been reading about the Bosnian war. Is it possible in PTW to make ships capturable when they are in port? I know this has happened many times in the real world where all the ship s in a harbor become the property of the invader.

are you positive? has anyone tried this yet?

I know that if you give a sea unit a defence of 0 they are captureable. I did this in one of my personal senarios. But I have never found a flag or stat that only allows them to be captured in port. They simply die.
It would be realistic if they could be captured in port.

I have a question.....

.....what would happen if a ship belonging to the 'green' civilization with a defence of zero and carrying say two infantry units were captured at sea by let's say the 'red' civilization?

What would happen to the two 'green' infantry....would they stay as 'green' units on board a 'red' ship or would they turn 'red'?

This could be a way of making piracy 'profitable'.....if all or most transport ships had a defence of zero, then they and their cargo could be captured and taken back to port.....the troops being 'press-ganged' into the red army, while the ship is disbanded, thus gaining some extra shields if not money.

We don't want modern submarines capturing ships, so modern transports would still need some defence value so that they could be sunk.
But Ancient and Middle Age transport ships on the other hand..... :groucho:

Does anyone know the answer to this question? :)

Actually from what I hear it doesn't work. :(

The Canoe in DyP has a defense of 0 but can carry one unit. If it is attacked while carrying a unit nothing happens.
Canoes that are carrying military units are unkillable.

Normally, since they have 0 defense, attacking a canoe will capture it. If it is carrying a military unit, any attack will attempt to capture it and fail. Bombardment won't damage it, so the only way to stop the canoe is to wait for it to unload and capture it then.

The Canoe doesn't sink and the the other ship also remains unharmed. For all intents and purposes then, a defense of 0 makes the transport invulnerable. Obviously we will have to do something about that in the mod.

I haven't seen it in person, mind you, but I have heard from DyP testers that this is what happens.

Not only dose it not work but in a quick test in PTW the AI wont attack ships with 0 defence. Why I dont know. In my senario used cruise ships with a defence of 0 but never lost one because I always give my transports an escort. As for the ships I attacked in that game well I never had a problem, I was able to capture them but I am not absolutly positive they had troops on them.

It is to bad that this dose not work well beacause its a fun concept.

I always thought (and mind you this may be wrong) that the INI file defines what happens when a ship of 0 defense is attacked. If a death animation is declared, then it will die, if a capture animation is declared, it is captured. If neither, then I think that is when you get nothing to happen

Someone should test this though. . . .

It's been a while since I used zero defense sea units but if I remember correctly (and maybe I don't) I thought that the ship was captured but the transported units died. I have this memory of seeing the death animations of the land units while the ship was being captured. Could be wrong tho... :crazyeye:

I made the coracle (0/0/2) and remember a case when I captured one from the AI. It obviously carried a swordsman, because its death animation was displayed.
And in my last war against the persians I captured a lot of coracles in costal cities, which I conquered.

BTW the AI does attack units without defense value. At least the barbarian galleys do so (and sink them instead of capturing) and are a real plague to travelling coracles.

What about that box in the PTW editor that says "Capture"?

I believe this allows a unit to capture other units. When I've added units with PTW, I have not been able to give them offensive or defensive AI usages without the "capture box" being checked. Don't take that as Gospel though, it's just my theory.

That's to allow the unit to be able to capture the Princess.

Well, I checked the PTW Editor help screen. This box, when checked, allows a unit to capture any unit that is capturable, princess units, king units, workers, settlers, etc.
