This goes for the other religious equivalents too, of course.

In some cities, the option to build these is dark and stays dark. The popup (when I hover over the build option) doesn't say that I'm missing any prerequisites. I have tons of temples in other cities. In fact, I can start a cathedral in one city, but am prevented from doing so in another, on the same turn! (Yes, they both have temples.) Plus, I've got lots of cathedrals built in yet other cities as well. I don't get it.

What is it that prevents me from building cathedrals?

Thanks in advance.

Precisely how many Christian temples do you have and what map size are you playing?

edit: and how many Christian cathedrals have you already built or are in the process of building?

you can only build one cathedral every 3 temple. for instance you have 9 cities with temple, then you can build 3 cathedral at max

the number of temples you need for each cathedral varies by map size. i've had the same problem you're having, hovering over it doesn't always tell me how many temples i need. it seems to happen only while i'm building that type of cathedral in another city that turn. i guess that confuses the AI so that it can't do the math. that's exactly what you're running into too. i don't know any work-around for it to find the exact number except by counting. what i do is build another type of cathedral in that city if possible, and i try to set some cities to build temples of that religion. some cities must be missing temples of that religion if my cities per cathedral ratio is planned to get me one of each in every big city (that's not always the case).

in cultural games i sit there with my scribbled notes, a list of my cities and checkboxes with the religions i have, temple, monastery, cathedral. i go thru and check the boxes when that city gets each one. i then lose my notes and have to make new ones, or can't read my own writing. but i have a lot of fun playing the actual game. it's just the notes where i get all :smoke:.

good luck!

Have you checked the religion is actually present in the city? That's a requirement too :)

*giggle* if the option to build it is there but greyed out, then the religion is there too :p.

i'm certain it's a bug linked to the fact that you're building one of that type in another city at the same time. i haven't paid enough attention to know if this happens even if you have, say, 20 spare temples you haven't "used" for cathedrals yet and are trying to build 2 on the same turn. i've also never had 20 spare temples.

the types that you're not currently building in another city, if they're greyed out, have text telling you "requires temples 7/9" or something to let you know that you need 2 more temples. the bug is that when you have another city building one, that text doesn't show up for that type of cathedral in any other city until the one in progress is complete. you just can't build it and don't get any explanation. it's a pain, and took me a bit to figure out what all the times it happened had in common. but i'll bet you 3 great artists that's what's going on *giggle*.

In fact, I can start a cathedral in one city, but am prevented from doing so in another, on the same turn! (Yes, they both have temples.)

it happens in that order, right? you do start one somewhere, then in city number two you're not allowed to. it's not linked to what city you try it in, it's just that you already started one and the computer won't add it up with one in the queue. btw, you say they both have temples, but in fact having a temple of that religion in that city itself is not a requirement before building a cathedral. the required number can be in any of your cities. usually you will have a temple of that kind first, but at times i've had overflow hammers and made my mandir or whichever before the temple just so they didn't go to waste.

Thanks all. It makes sense now. I didn't know about the temple-to-cathedral ratio. And, like missionaries, I see why the AI prevents me from building 2 simultaneously, when I only have the "budget" for one.

Too bad the game's light on feedback. But a minor flaw. I'm enjoying it tremendously. A big advance over any prior Civ.

Isn't it 4 temples to 1 cathedral?

the number depends on the map size you're playing. it can be confusing, since if you check the civilopedia from the game menu, instead of during an actual game, the information it gives you is based on a standard map at normal speed. but if you check it during a game, it adjusts the information as appropriate for your current game speed, map size, and local weather. okay i made that last one up.

That explains it. I usually play marathon games on huge fractal landmasses (about 10 civs). It would make more sense to require 4 temples for one cathedral.
