Maybe it's just me, but I see the Barbarians as one of the funnest parts of Civ2. I practically always choose "Raging Hordes" for my games. By making the world more uncertain and dangerous, it also makes the game more realistic - c'mon, what real civilization lasted for 6020 years?

However, even in Raging Hordes games, I've been disappointed to see, for instance, exactly one "Religious Fanatics in Arms!" and zero "Guerrilla Uprising"s and "Peasant Revolt"s. This despite playing on a Large map with plenty of uncolonized land thru' the entire game.

Is it somehow possible to edit the frequency of Barbarians above that of Raging Hordes? Is it, outside scenarioes, possible to create new kinds of Barbarian uprisings (say a "Cossack Rebellion" that creates a number of Dragoons)?
 
late in the game you can get barbarian blows of up to 70 something, in combinations of fanatics + cannons or partisans + cavalry. The fun part is that units only leave to stack to the extent that they can wind up one per surrounding hex within their movement radius, leaving a heap after their first turn in the middle of 50 top 60 units, you can figt your way to it with tanks or stealth fighters and blast the stack with one shot.
 
I like fighting barbarians too but it p*sses me off when they pillage my developed squares.

Usually I am so developed by the end of the game anyway that they are more of a problem for the AI's Civs, which always leave huge areas undeveloped. I'm too urbanized by that point to sprout barbarians...

There are higher settings of barbs.Also higher difficulty levels.You simply add more levels to the right .txt file.I think game.txt.After raging hoardes,type in barbarian wraith or whatever.
There are 5(iirc) more levels above deity.The 6th crashes it.

There is also a quite good programm you can download under the Utility Programs section. Its called Civ Tweak and it allows you to alter the amount of gold the barbarians get each turn, and what goverment they use. Don't know if it always works though
 
I dunno, right now I am playing a game on Emporer and in the 1700s already own most of the world cause the "raging hordes" destroyed most of my enemy civilizations before they could get going. Only a couple seemed to have survived in tact (the Egyptians I took over half from barbarian cities). There are a couple Civs I haven't found yet but I am not real optomistic. I think in many ways hordes makes the game way to easy by pounding on the computer Civs much harder than they do your own.
 
Re: Rife's experience - I've seen the message "%STRING civilization destroyed by Barbarians" only once or twice, and I almost always play on the Raging Hordes level (or sicne this thread on the "Raging Hordes+1" level, which I fancied to call "Warring Nations"). Despite my like for big maps, it's much more common that an AI civ gets killed off early by another AI civ. I rarely seen the AI lose a city to the Barbarians either.

So, either you were simply unlucky, or your Barbarians are brighter/stronger than mine.
 
I think Barbarians are just fine too. I usually play at King level, with Raging Hordes. They are a source of cheap cavalry if you have a Galleon with a couple of diplomats aboard cruising around coastal squares to look for them. Additionally, they are a good way to 'blood' warships and other units without going to war when you are not ready. When a rival civ exploration unit stumbles on one, it can slow up their expansion. After all the next 'Goody Hut' they might have found could be a Settler, Advanced Tribe, or Gold. Sure they can be a nuisance, but they are not that difficult to deal with.
