It is not at all arbitrary. Whenever any city hits 10 culture, the borders expand and the citizens are reassigned. In the case of your capital on emperor and above, the following occurs: Food is counted, and you get a new citizen. That citizen is assign to one of the 7 available tiles within the original borders. Commerce is counted. Production is counted. Culture is counted, and your border expands. Citizens are reassigned, and the entertainer is created.

You see, you don't lose any production or commerce here. You just need to put the entertainer to work and make him content with mp, or make the other guy happy with lux tax.

Have an AI capture the FP city. This will automatically destroy the FP, leaving you to rebuild it wherever you want. Recapture the old FP city while the majority of the citizens still has your nationality. And voila, moved the FP without disbanding any city! :goodjob:
 
Nice idea! :) Though personally I don't think I'd ever do that... there's something in me that prevents me from ever just giving a city to the AI, no matter what the benefits. :evil: ;)

I know what you mean! There are other things too that just don't feel right. For instance, I don't think I ever will abandon my capital city in order to make a palace jump. I guess that's why I'm only a mediocre player.
 
Is there any point to have distant *large* cities *with improvements*? All improvements are payed for by the economy in general (right?, not the city itself) and and if it isn't producing anything but one gold and one shield, obviously there is no point to having it grow at all (unless it will produce workers or settlers or become a future capital or etc. and cultural improvements might be valuable). Is this correct?
Oh! Are scientists and taxmen immune from the 95%(ish) corruption?
 
@Frollo - Me neither. :)

@megaclom - No, large cities are not useless, if you get them full of enough spare food to create plenty of taxmen/scientists. (This is why you should ALWAYS irrigate everything possible around these corrupt cities, to max spare food and therefore available specialists.)

As for improvements - it really depends on the improvement. ;) Obviously things such as a Bank will be useless, but happiness improvements (such as Temple, Marketplace etc) will be VERY useful for allowing the large population that each city has to keep happy (and therefore not waste valuable specialists as entertainers).

I agree with Lord_Parkin.........However, if you are playing to win by say a Conquest Victory, there's not much point in being concerned with distant cities.....be more concerned with building offensive fast units!

If you're playing to win by Domination or High[est] Score Histographic, you will need a bunch of useless [large] cities for the extra Firaxis score. ;)

YES!.......And Civil Engineers too. :)
 
Correct...........Can only use CE's for improvements......but they're not affected by the city's waste/corruption. :)
 
How can you use smilies other than the ones listed (from :) to :bump: )? :confused:

I've seen some people like Tomoyo use some awesome demented/mutant smilies.
 
You already see all the CFC smilies. Tomoyo must be using smileys/graphics from elsewhere.
