Ok, so here's the plan. I want to take some cold & lifeless little island near Greenland or someplace (maybe the size of Oahu), drag it (with a thousand tow-ships) to somewhere tropical, import some cool exotic plants and animals and set up a resort. Once I make millions I will drag another island down and build my private estate there.

So, how is this possible?

It's not with a real island. Most of them are attached, at the bottom, or haven't you noticed?

Most likely any such island would fall apart when you tried to "break" its connection to the sea floor. There are already lots of uninhabited tropical islands in the world. Most don't have any fresh water.

The best approach would be the approach of the rich arabs: buy an empty one, build it out to the size you want, build a desal plant for water; construct your resort and invite your arab friends to visit. What's a couple of billon dollars?

Isn't depending on Arabs dangerous?

I would bet that you have a better chance of dying on the freeway than being killed by a terrorist. :p

But then again I'm not involved right now in personal financial relations with any.

And are you equating Arab with terrorist?! :mischief: ;)

Many of the Great Exumas in the Bahamas are uninhabited.

I can build my evil lair HERE! :nya:

Great idea Narz, let's just buy an island and do that. It would be great!

How about you just piled sand and rock on top of a dead coral reef that's submerged? You can terraform it into any shape you want--make a few gullys to have a little Fresh water.

Note that I'm not in any way being serious.

Or just find the island the castaways from Lost are inhabitings, kick off the Others, and get Hurley to invest with you. I mean, they have fresh water, fruit, polar bears, statues of feet with four toes, mysterious hatches and monsters - in short, everything one needs for a modern luxury resort.

In case you haven't noticed, dirt and rocks don't float.
Depends on the size of the rock.

Very small ones float, just like bread, apples, cider, gravy, cherries, mud, churches, and lead.

Oh, and witches and ducks float, too.

Don't crush his dream! Try to be supportive! Perhaps he went to public school.........

Forget the original idea and just buy a small island (even a submerged one) at a suitable location. Next, throw down tons of rock and earth to reclaim land and build up your island to your desired size and shape. It's been done already. Both Hongkong's new airport and one in Japan were built this way, as well as several real estate projects in Dubai.

You'll need a great big heap of money to pull it off though.

Not exactly an island but check this out. It shows what today's technology, a lot of imagination and plenty of cash to throw around can accomplish:
