Since the other thread got closed for going off topic I'd like to see if we can do another thread which actually stays on topic. IMO there is a pretty fundamental difference in the moderation styles between Civilization's two main fan sites and much of it has to do with who visits each site. Apolyton tends to be populated by older posters, most of whom are very well educated, so the site has a high number of people with PHds, Law degrees, or master's degrees in hard sciences. This means that when clueless people spout off about things they know nothing about then there is usually a subject matter expert, who deals with the topic for a living, who can set them straight while CFC tends to have a much younger poster audience so you get a lot more background noise.

The other main difference in moderation style seems to be that Apolyton treats people as big boys and girls letting them speak their minds, even if it is to call an idiot an idiot, where as at CFC you're never allowed to say the obvious no matter how well called for it is. Contrary to the claims some people here made in the other thread Apolyton does have great adult debates though people are expected to make mature and well reasoned arguments or else they'll be near universally derided. Again, since CFC tends to have such a young posting membership blatantly wrong or out right stupid posts must be tolerated and the rules insure this is the case. Much of the reason CFC gets more traffic is they get a lot of repeat traffic for the young and clueless who would be quickly ostracized over at poly for being stupid. Again this all connects back to the fact that poly's average user is in his 30's with around 10 years in a real career and normally at least a B.Sc. but more often a M.Sc. or a PHd while CFC's population seems to be mostly high school kids or college kids who have not yet graduated. Sure, there are exception in both cases but that observation is more true then not.

Please add your own observations.

We have those too. You just lack a user base, the only people left being people who played Civ2 and quit ages ago. I can count lawyers, scientists, a theologian, doctors, a multitude of people in college both graduate and undergrad, etc. here. Active posters too; probably more than your active poster base.

Obviously, it's idiotic not be able to make note of an idiot being an idiot.
Am I at least in the ballpark of what you're talking about in this comparison?

Hmm... and here I thought maturity was the ability to discuss something with someone else without degenerating to name calling.

So you think CFC is full of retards and appolyton is a circlejerk of inbred 30y olds ?

There is the ability to debate things rationally and then there are people who simply will not suffer fools gladly. If one is prepared to debate matters on a factual basis then they will not have any problem at Apolyton but if they spout off with nonsense then, yes, people will either decide they'd rather spend time with their spouse and kids or just tell him, sometimes rudely, that he's completely wrong and off base. That just comes with being an adult who works a full time job, who has already had the dumb debates several times, and who doesn't have extra time to waste on someone who doesn't know what the heck he's talking about. Call it the adult paradox if you wish.

Anyway, with regards to degrees...

8 pHds or equivalent, 17 masters, and 53 bachelors.

I'm glad CFC has some educated posters in the mix. To bad the proportions are not as high as at poly and there is so much background noise here.

Like most people bother responding to pointless polls. I'm sorry, but even you must understand that busy people on respond to interesting threads.

I agree, the number of active highly educated posters on CFCOT is probably higher than that. Either way, it's larger than the amount of posters remaining in Apolyton that you haven't alienated yet.

Wow, what a controversial way to misstate what I said but feel free to run with it.

Nonsense. Poly gets plenty of traffic no matter how many times, in how many threads, you claim other wise. To compare, right now, CFCOTF has 56 viewers while Poly OTF has 45. OMG! It's such a difference and clearly poly is dead while CFC is a hive of activity.

You'd figure after posting that multiple times, and being corrected multiple times, you'd be able to get the facts right but I guess not.

Other than the fact that there's double the amount of registered posters on the OT at 2 AM in the morning...

And what, pray tell, does that have to do with your claim no one posts at Apolyton? Yes, CFC's posting population seems to have more Europeans and Australians while Apolyton's tends to be more US centric.

I was gonna take a vacation from this place, but this should be interesting.

The name calling here just takes other forms, at first I thought it was just cowardly but I soon realized its to bypass the mods' sensitivity to the raw "truth".

Instead of calling someone an idiot, you simply make some snide comment about their lack of reading comprehension blah blah blah. If the insulted person responds with less than a thank you kind sir for pointing out my fault, I will work on that, they draw the ire of the mods.

At Poly, the mods allow us to work this out. Yes, sometimes it turns into flame wars but that happens here too, the flamers just try to sound real smart with their insults and the mods turn a blind eye (depending of course on their personal biases toward the offender and target).

And why threads get closed here for going OT is a mystery, why not just tell the "offenders" to get back OT? Jesus, nothing pisses me off more than having a thread I'm interested in closed because someone else upsets a mod. Thats why I stopped starting threads here, some joker jumps in with BS and the thread gets closed.

quantity > quality? That would make Fox better than its competition...

In my experience, Apolyton threads mostly consists of snarky single line insults at the OP. At least here, we take the time to trash the OP properly! There's more substance to most of our discussions, from what I can tell.

Also, our babe thread is better. So nyeh. :p

I see 72 here at CFC and 21 at Apoly right now...

105 total on the Poly Boards and 707 total on all the CFC boards
