Chapter 5: First In The Hearts Of His Countrymen
From 1910 to about 1950, our top priorities are a Transcontinental Railroad, a large workforce, and expanding our borders.
Temples, Libraries and even Universities are rushed in our new border cities. With science at max (5 turns/tech) and 10% luxury spending, we are still getting around +400 income. About half of this is from gpt deals with other civs for American technologies.
Here is America in 1934, soon after the completion of Wall Street:
The Old World is not blessed with the same peace and prosperity that we are. The Byzantines, the Vikings, and later the French and the Dutch, are evicted from Europe in a series of decade-spanning wars. The new empires of Germany, Russia, and Portugal now rule the European continent.
Starting in 1938, Japan and England enter a long and brutal war that eventually causes both to fall to Fascism. America is one of the few remaining Democratic Republics, the rest switch to Communism or Fascism to maintain their empires.
Stinking commie infiltrators try to change our gummint!
No thanks
In the 1940s we finally finish the Transcontinental Railroad. Many of our core cities have built every improvement except police stations and coal plants; we switch over to Wealth and use our massive income to rush even more culture improvements to expand our borders.
Looking at America, you might think that our terrain improvement program is going pretty slowly, but we actually have almost two dozen native and Iroquois workers. In Rhye's Of Civ, it takes piles of workers to achieve even the simplest improvement. Cutting down all that forest, for example, is going to take years.
By 1952, we are third in the world in prosperity after Russia and China. The Russians, having conquered all of Scandinavia, are our main rivals. Our options:
1. Global thermonuclear war
2. Normandy landings in Oslo
3. Become so prosperous and happy that Russia collapses out of envy at our blue jeans and rock and roll
Option 3 it is!
With the lux slider set to 40%, every single American is happy, and we still have a positive income! In 1958, we additionally complete the Hoover Dam project, giving us even more production which Wealth turns into gold. Our score increases by leaps and bounds.
On the tech tree, I am making a beeline for Marines. The USA has two unique units which come about the same time. There's the B52, which is a nice bomber, and the US Marine, which is basically a cheap, no-resource amphibious tank.
We still have not had a Golden Age so this will be the perfect. My plan is total conquest of the Aztecs and Maya, probably followed by another war with China (I want to take Hawai'i if possible).
Here is a screenshot of the Old World in 1980 A.D. (warning: BIG)
Some empires of note:
The English are Modern, small in territory but advanced in technology with a massive navy of Dreadnoughts.
The Portuguese have expanded more than I've ever seen them. They control all of Iberia, are Modern, and apparently have a very strong military.
The Germans have entered a Golden Age (with their Panzers, I guess) and have conquered all of France, the Netherlands, and Byzantium. They have even fought Russia. They are still Industrial.
The Russians are still Industrial but have a large empire, having taken over Scandinavia. Russia has always led in the score because their scout popped an early settler creating St. Petersburg. However with our Happiness Initiative we are almost caught up to them.
The Ottomans, Persians, and Arabians seem to be a triple bloc of allied powers, that together have a breathtakingly huge empire. The Muslim world has expanded to take in Greece, North Africa, Central Asia, India, South Africa, Indochina, Australia, and EVEN MONGOLIA (yes, all those "Mongol" cities are Persian). All three empires are Modern.
China used to be a big world power but they have stayed Industrial and not fought any wars of expansion.
Japan has peacefully expanded all over East Asia. They are Modern but stuck in a bad, decades-long war with England.
Finally, here is a view of the American Heartland:
Our terrain is much improved vs 50 years ago. You can see the two Transports, each carrying 6 Marines, that are just waiting for the order from incoming President Reagan, to go "spread democracy" to Central America
