Nobles' Club LXXXVIII: Suryavarman II of the Khmer

Immortal to 1 AD
Spoiler :

I settled in place and went agg>BW>wheel>pottery>writing. Went worker first then grew to size 3 and went worker>settler>worker>settler with some chops. I put cities 2 and 3 on the flood plains river to the SE. Got the cottages down fast and it didn't take long until I was working all of them. AIs aren't too close by and there is a lot of open land to the East and North so I don't rush. I convert to Buddhism and go Masonry>Horseback Riding>Aesthetics>Construction. Traded for Alphabet and Math.

Plan on doing UU/cat war against America. Not in a huge hurry since no one is too close or has too much land/wonders worth taking. I build Pyramids, Parthenon (traded for marble) and Great Library while teching to Elephants. The Flood plains cottages/Rep scientist combo is getting a good tech rate even w/ slider off.

JC seems to be expanding freely and will be a problem later. Charley is done expanding and should go to war with Liz or Hammy. He probably will be 2nd target after America.

1030 AD
Spoiler :

Took 5 of America's cities while going Civil Service>Feudalism>Nationalism>Paper>Edu>Lib (or something like that). England was bribed in so i made peace w/ America. Used GE to build MoM and i just started what will be a 36 turn GA right as i lib Military Tradition. I end up bribing Charley on Liz and then backstabbing him w/ Cuirs after finishing off America. JC is up to 14 cities and teching decent so that will be an ugly war later.

1828 Domination
Spoiler :

Used Cuirs/Cavalry to capitulate Charley and Hammy. Give Liz Rifling so she can fight off big stack JC sent her way. She loses two cities and gets peace - JC's stack is stuck in England land so i declare on him with a bunch of Cavalry (he doesn't have rifles yet but has Steel). Apparently he had a pact w/ Justinian - it was an ugly war but his stack being stuck made it not too horrible. Took a couple cities then threw a big cavalry stack (highly promoted) at Rome and failed miserably. Got peace for some gold and one of the English cities he took - gave it back to Liz and then easily capitulated Justinian 1 on 1.

Attack JC again once i get infantry/artillery. In 1802 I'm finally finishing off his stack in English land while two other of my stacks are taking his 4 or 5 main cities. It was a long and painful war but it worked i guess.

Why would you build Stonehenge on a CRE leader? I don't see the point of diverting beakers to Mysticism and hammers to Henge when you could be securing more land against Burger King, who is threatening to box you in.

Of course, correct me if I'm wrong, that's just my assessment of the situation. If I had to guess why you did it, I would assume that you wanted the extra Prophet points to jumpstart your SSE. Still, the tradeoff doesn't seem worth it :(

My second go at Prince level. First time playing non-Fin/Phi leader actually...discovered how amazing creative is!

Played till 860AD

Spoiler :

1. REXed like there was no tomorrow (at least by my standards ;) ), had 8 cities in 400 BC, but my slider went down to 10%, so decided to build research in some cities. Built the pyramids because I had stone.

B02hn.jpg

Took advantage of the trait and built 14 workers early. But research slider still remained a problem. I had construction at about 200 BC, so started building elepults.

Chopped every single bush in sight to produce my army. Attacked Lincoln in 500 AD and took his 5 cities (razed 1). I have Feud so I will cap him.

I have cottage spammed but still not managed to increase my research slider to beyond 10-20%. somehow I still have the tech lead, so I didn't bother much. My stack is almost intact, so I think I will be able to take another neighbor or two before rifling...both Byzantine and English are ripe targets.

Please critique my game guys...thanks.

I don't really see any benefit of myst either.
But then again, if you can build henge with stone, it's almost allways a good deal.

With me it's pretty much a reflex to build Stonehenge given starting stone -- even forgetting about CRE! But Mysticism fairly early makes sense if you're going for the Oracle eventually, since it makes Masonry (for the 'mids and GW) a bit cheaper.

Please don't mention specific AIs -- it might even be a bit of a spoiler to talk about whether any neighbour is near enough to need boxing in, or to be a target of some kind of rush, or whether rushes are out of the question because of distance, or basically anything map-specific.

Well I can see four reasons :

1) Stonehenge is a free building in all cities. It's +1 (and later +2) culture per turn. Being Cre makes it less usefull but not useless and certainly not bad.

2) It's GPP per turn.

3) Having it also means an IA doesn't.

4) Myst is needed for Poly/Meditation which are needed for Lit/Philo. Furthermore, Obs went for the Oracle.

If you have stone, why wouldn't you build it while IAs are settling your cities ? :D

Even if you expect to conquer the AIs for several good cities, you'll usually need a few of your own for a military buildup, and the time to build 'henge is time not getting those first critical few settled. In my case I am hoping to put off warfare until elepults or cataphants are online, which makes early cities even more important.

But, you're right, 'henge isn't a completely wrong move for a CRE leader on some maps.

As you said, it depends but Stonehenge is only 60 :hammers: with Stone. And the border pop of your capitol also king of "reserve" land for you since IA can't found within it. And if they found close to it, well, you earned a free city to flip...

My plan is to expand peacefully until Elephants and Catapults, then go out conquering.
Spoiler history and dotmap :
Intended to tech Agriculture > Mysticism >Masonry (to get stone quarried as soon as possible) > The Wheel > AH > Pottery > BW (since I planned to whip only after having a granary) then the Priesthood/Oracle path. However, 2nd hut got Masonry (the others were gold) and I decided I wanted to chop/whip a 2nd worker and 2 settlers earlier than originally planned, so I reset to Agr > The Wheel (since I could connect stone early) > BW > Pottery > AH and then Myst > Med > Priest > Writ.

I got the Great Wall in 2725 and will start on the 'mids as soon as I get 2-3 settlers out, switching to Oracle as soon as Priesthood is available.

In 2250 I have my first settler and need to pick a place to send him:
2550BCdotmap.jpg
  • Light blue SE of the wheat is going to be a good commerce city; putting off warfare until catophants might mean its cottages are providing enough money to sustain conquest for a while.
  • I initially considered yellow to capture the western gold, but if Red makes sense for the gold instead I could leave room for Light Brown in the north. Red also "settles aggressively toward the AI" and has decend :food:/:hammers:, so I think I want it for my 2nd city lest Charly grab it or something near it.
  • It would be nice to "settle aggressively toward the AI" on light green to the SW, or 1N of there, since it has decent production for a troop buildup, but I'd need Iron Working to get decent food from the rice; I'd have to steal the cows from the commerce city. That would be OK if I don't settle it until after Light Blue hits its happy cap, but Charly might have blocked it by then (and possibly with an inferior location I might have to consider razing). On the other hand it would get some food from the cows and maybe some farmed grassland after chopping trees for some infrastructure, and that might sustain production from the gold, the jungle-free grass hill, and the plains hill.
So I think I'll go Red (SW gold), then light green if it's still available (SE gold) and then light blue (commerce), all as fast as I can.
Question regarding the Oracle tech, given a catophant attack strategy:
Spoiler :
Standard at Noble would be Metal Casting or Code of Laws, but getting cats early might mean that holding out for Construction could be better. Though perhaps it risks losing the Oracle? Any opinions?

I'm inclined to play it safe and go for MC, since if I don't need anything else at that point I can start on forges until I can pump out cats. Code of Laws is less of a priority since I hope to be able to hold off on courthouses for a while and can get Buddhism by conquering Charly if nothing else spreads to me first.

As you said, it depends but Stonehenge is only 60 :hammers: with Stone.

Agree that it’s certainly very cheap here thanks to the stone...and I agree that building it has certain benefits. :) But, to the nobles out there, remember that 60:hammers: is also the cost of a worker (ignoring the benefits of the expansive trait). And if there’s one thing that I see nobles consistently underbuild, it’s workers. Given that we’re creative in this game, perhaps there’s an opportunity for some nobles to pass on Stonehenge, invest the hammers in worker(s) instead, and see what a difference that makes to their game. :)

Emperor/1580AD Domination
Spoiler :

Everyone else but Hammurabi and Charlemagne adopted hinduism, so the diplo side of things was simple once I converted to hinduism and bribed Julius on Charly and I didn't have any shared borders with Hammurabi to make him a threat at any point.

What I did was I expanded into 3 cities to block some land, chopped/built the mids, expanded into 3 more cities (7th one later on) and rode the pyramid power to lib rifling in 940AD (also teched nationalism before lib) and attacked Charlemagne with Cavalry in 1120AD. From there on it was straight-forward.

Why would you build Stonehenge on a CRE leader?

Advanced Tactics.

I don't see the point of diverting beakers to Mysticism

I have very strong & valid reasons for that tech-path.

Still, the tradeoff doesn't seem worth it

You need to take another careful look at my capital's inflow.

For the cost of 2 Obelisks, I get INFINITE Obelisks, not to mention all the other benefits.

who is threatening to box you in.

Let them try and box me in then... someone's going to lose some cities that way.

BTW:
Spoiler :
One of my neighbours had to use culture bombs just to prevent losing a city to me.

@obs

checked your save...those 12 settled GP's were really interesting look. You went with 4 city break out (that's the number of cities I counted as self settled)?

Where do you guys find these awesome starts :)
I'll probably make a Deity game out of this, looks too tempting to pass.

If you have stone, why wouldn't you build it while IAs are settling your cities ? :D

This like most things depends on the diff. level you play.
It is a trade-off, with stone the Pyramids should be yours 100%, esp. with this start, so you have lots of useful things to build besides the Henge.
Obs doesn't mind GPriest points, i do, arguing about it doesn't make much sense cos everyone plays a bit different.
