The Community of Civilization Fanatics
"It's a shame it's just a game"

Game Site: NationStates
Official Site: Civilization Fanatics
Regional Site: CFCopia

Welcome! To those of you who might not know me, I am Sparthage: CivFanatic, Civ3 Nut, Forum Gamer, and a Brony too boot.

This game will essentially be a Realpolitik-like game, only we are using NationStates instead of Civilization.

Of course, this will change the way the game is run, as we will no longer have specific information from the game. Rather, I will create information based upon what we know from the website.

Cities will be named after forums here on CFC.

Elections will be held once every month, with each Presidential term lasting one month.

Everything else is totally unknown. I have no clue how I'm going to do this, but I'll do it somehow. Basically, this gives you guys a free reign (at least for now) in suggesting rules for me to implement.

Current Situation:
-Elections: Parties will be allowed to form and develop until Monday, when week-long elections will be held. The winner of the election will take office for the month of February.

-For the month of January you all are acting as my advisors until the end of the month. So, you give me your arguments, and whichever side debates the best has its option chosen.

Current Issues (as of 1/14/2012)
Nazi Sympathizers Plan Rally
> The Issue: Far-right-wing Nazi supporters plan to stage a rally in the city center tomorrow, giving voice to their violent, racist views.
> The Debate:
>> View #1: "Frankly, I'm appalled that the government can even consider allowing this travesty to go ahead," says prominent Jewish personality Anne-Marie Winters. "We can't let these animals broadcast their message of hate. Surely Civilization Fanatics is too civilized for that."
>> View #2: "It's exactly because we're civilized that we must let the demonstration proceed," says free speech campaigner Barack Chen. "We may not like what they have to say, but in this society, people have the right to argue whatever political view they want, no matter how hateful, selfish, or stupid it is."

Information on the Nation:

Overview:
Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Average
Economy: Reasonable
Political Freedoms: Very Good
Capital City: CivFanatics Center
National Currency: The Cookie
National Animal: Sid Meier
National Motto: "It's a shame it's just a game."
Description: The Community of Civilization Fanatics is a fledgling, safe nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 6 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The enormous government juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 35%, but much higher for the wealthy. A substantial private sector is led by the Gambling industry, followed by Woodchip Exports and Information Technology.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is well under control, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Civilization Fanatics's national animal is the Sid Meier, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Cookie.

Spoiler Issues in the Nation & The Government's Positions :
January 14, 2012
Should Democracy be Cumpolsury?
> The Issue: In response to a slow news week, certain highbrow newspapers have stirred up the debate over voluntary vs compulsory voting.
> Government View:
>> View #1: "Compulsory voting makes about as much sense as having the death penalty for attempted suicide," says civil rights activist Fleur Lopez. "You can't force people to be free! You can only give them the choice. Besides, if all those derelicts who can't be bothered to get off their butts once every few years voted, who would they elect? I shudder to think."

Uranium Deposit Promises to Enrich Civilization Fanatics
> The Issue: Prospecting company Nukes4U has uncovered a large uranium deposit in Civilization Fanatics's south-west.
> Government View:
>> View #3: "There's no need for an either-or decision," says the government's Minister for Mining, Clear-Felling, and the Environment. "We can preserve most of the rainforest and allow mining of a small part. After all, think of all the good that the money from this uranium deposit can bring to Civilization Fanatics."

Child Casino Shock
> The Issue: Children as young as eight have been spotted gambling in some of Civilization Fanatics's seedier casinos.
> Government View:

More Police Needed
> The Issue: As crime rates rise, some in the community are calling for increased policing.
> Government View:
>> View #2: "The solution to crime is not more police!" says noted sociologist and occasional crime novelist Miranda Li. "Studies repeatedly show that crime is caused by poverty and poor education. Increase government spending in these areas, and crime will fall! Maybe not overnight, but it will happen."

I'll start with, just, my initial outlook on the current issues

-Current Issues (Choose Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, or Strongly Agree):
>A country should be judged by how it treats its worst-off citizens.
Strongly agree
>Corporations do more good for society than harm.
Disagree
>Marijuana should be legal.
Strongly agree
>The world needs to rediscover its spirituality.
Disagree
>All young people should perform a year's compulsory military service.[/I]
Agree
>Capitalism is on the way out.
Agree
>Without democracy, a country has nothing.
Strongly agree
>It's more important to deter criminals than try to rehabilitate them.
Strongly disagree

I might as well use the same format

-Current Issues (Choose Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, or Strongly Agree):
>A country should be judged by how it treats its worst-off citizens.
Strongly agree
>Corporations do more good for society than harm.
Strongly Disagree
>Marijuana should be legal.
Agree
>The world needs to rediscover its spirituality.
Strongly Disagree
>All young people should perform a year's compulsory military service.
(I am unsure about this one depending on exactly what this would entail if it entails training and doing more basic things and not front line fighting I would agree if it involves compulsory front line fighting I disagree but I doubt it is the latter so for now count me as agreed
>Capitalism is on the way out.
Agree
>Without democracy, a country has nothing.
Disagree (Democracy is important for every country but I don't believe a country has nothing if it doesn't have Democracy)
>It's more important to deter criminals than try to rehabilitate them.
Agree (We should rehabilitate them but deterring crime should always be the goal of our justice system and police)

I'll do it the same way:

-Current Issues (Choose Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, or Strongly Agree):
>A country should be judged by how it treats its worst-off citizens.

Strongly Agree (Equality is giving the very same opportunities to everybody. Without it, democracy is a mere illusion)
>Corporations do more good for society than harm.
Agree (As they employ people, that allows the system to keep going and our society to develop onto higher quotes of welfare)
>Marijuana should be legal.
Strongly Disagree (That would rise our people's lung cancer ratio and severe brain damage to consumers)
>The world needs to rediscover its spirituality.
Disagree (This world's spirituality was discovered far ago, if we have chosen to forget about it, so be it)
>All young people should perform a year's compulsory military service.
Strongly Disagree (Our young men should spend this year in learning, studying, working, doing good to their society)
>Capitalism is on the way out.
Disagree (Capitalism, until now, has proven the bast system available)
>Without democracy, a country has nothing.
Strongly agree (It is people who define the country, thus negating them the vote would be destroying our own sense of nation)
>It's more important to deter criminals than try to rehabilitate them.
Disagree (An individual that comes back to society to help it is much better than one consuming the state's budget)

I'll do it the same way:
>Marijuana should be legal.
Strongly Disagree (That would rise our people's lung cancer ratio and severe brain
damage to consumers)

Marijuana doesn't cause lung cancer or brain damage.

>All young people should perform a year's compulsory military service.
Strongly Disagree (Our young men should spend this year in learning, studying, working, doing good to their society)

There study will benefit from a year of service. They will learn discipline, teamwork, leadership and more skills that they will need in the rest of their lifes.
If they serve when they are 17/18 till 18/20 this will not interfere. This will even give them an extra year to think what they want to do with their life's, something a lot of kids don't seem to know these days.
After their service they can go to college and graduate around 25 leaving plenty of years for work.

And besides, they will study during their service. The military isn't al about weapons, they will also learn Math, History etc. And they will do good for the society. They will be deployed to support during natural disasters, they will learn first aid will can come in handy for their entire life.

>Capitalism is on the way out.
Disagree (Capitalism, until now, has proven the bast system available)

Capitalism in it's truest form is on it's way out. The best available system is a combination of Liberal ideas with Socialist ideas.

>It's more important to deter criminals than try to rehabilitate them.
Disagree (An individual that comes back to society to help it is much better than one consuming the state's budget)

Rehabilitation can cost money just as imprisoning can. Also just because you make deterring your focus doesn't mean you don't rehabilitate ever its just setting a different focus. I agree with the poster above since he's explained a little bit more of what this military service would entail.

>A country should be judged by how it treats its worst-off citizens.
Naw, survival of the fittest!
>Corporations do more good for society than harm.
Drives innovation
>Marijuana should be legal.
agree
>The world needs to rediscover its spirituality.
Strongly disagree
>All young people should perform a year's compulsory military service.
That will straighten them out!
>Capitalism is on the way out.
Dismiss
>Without democracy, a country has nothing.
Overrated
>It's more important to deter criminals than try to rehabilitate them.

Could you at least link to nationstates?

I'm leaving this. NS is boring.

lol, its not even started, and you aren't required to do anything.. you don't have to officially leave!

I don't care. It is quite boring. One / two issues a day, and having to discuss it all here? When all choices are wrong? No thanks.

Done. I posted the OP in a hurry as I was short on time.

@JoanK: That's okay if that's your opinion. But this is largely meant to be an experiment. I don't have any concrete plans for the game here, so if you want to suggest something that would make it better in your eyes, go ahead. To me, the interesting part of NationStates isn't the issues, but the RP on their forums. And yes, I created a special email for the thread, so we can have people doing specific RPing throughout their forums (soccer tournaments, wars, alliances, etc).
