Northwards now, as north as we can go, beyond the rails, beyond the rivers, to the vast, windswept wastes at the top of the world...

Helluland

Helluland is the northernmost and most thinly populated of all the landsdelar. Vast, frigid and barren, Helluland is truly unearthly in its stark, sublime beauty. A handful of isolated whaling stations are the sole outposts of Vinlandic civilization in this harsh land. The landsdel’s administrative center, a term used in the loosest possible sense, is the town of Nansenhamn, named for the famed Norwegian Explorer. A scant few hundred Vinlanders call this settlement their home. The remainder of Helluland is populated by the Thulean Skraelings who call themselves Inuit. Due to their isolation, use of different resources and lack of desirable land, the Inuit have managed to come to a mutually acceptable working relationship with the King and Riksdag of Vinland. In this agreement the Inuit are recognized as loyal subjects to the crown, serving to uphold Vinland’s territorial claims in the far north. In return, Vinland governs with a very light hand in the area, largely leaving the natives to their own devices. Much more significant than the government has been impact of the Vinlandic Lutheran Church, whose missionaries have built small houses of worship and worked to spread Christianity to the shamanist Inuit.

Proposal 2

Papal States is here and musing over what to do for its orders :p

I like Proposal 1, but you'd think with a landsdel that is almost entirely Inuit there would be some kind of Innusuk or something on the flag perhaps in the shape of a cross due to the proportion of Christian missionaries. I don't know, just a thought.

They didn't really have any cultural at all of flag designs, and most likely did not offer and were not requested to provide input on the design of the flag. I suspect the Inuit didn't really view it as anything of great importance- a symbol that the Vinlanders used to represent the arbitrarily delineated region, a region whose definition is largely irrelevant to the native population. Again, though they are formally subjects of Vinland, they really don't have a ton to do with it. They hunt, fish, and run an informal trade with the Vinlandic outposts in the far north- everybody profits, and nobody ends up excessively stepping on anyone else's toes, but the two groups really live in different worlds.

Also, because Gem Hound asked, here's a black cross on a white field, which I think looks pretty ugly.

The Niqirtsituk (North Star) is probably the most important symbol for the Inuit, right up with the Inuksuk, and if I were to design this flag with the natives in mind, I'd doubtlessly want to incorporate one or both of them in the canton, or to deface the center of the Nordic cross with appropriate symbology. However, at the time of this flag's creation (1919, as it stands), finding a symbol that properly represents the skraelings really isn't a high priority in many peoples' minds. However, in the future, if the Inuit become a more integrated part of Vinland, or if Vinland comes to be more sensitive to the plight of native civilizations, I could definitely see the flag being modified or outright replaced to include Inuit symbols.

I guess that makes a lot sense re: Inuit and Vinlander not interacting much in Helluland.

Still, if Vinland continues on its namby-pamby social democratic path, I can see Helluland turning into this TL's equivalent of Nunavut - a landsdel for the Inuit. Considering Vinland has been pretty unfriendly to the Skraelings previously, most of the Inuit in the country would be centred around there.

tsk tsk, breaking heraldic rules by putting gold (yellowish) on silver (white). Just leave the quarter empty and have a simple black-white cross thingy. Alternatively have a central symbol of some sort (northern star?) on a plain background.

Namby-pamby, heh. We're pretty progressive on workers' rights, sure, but most other fields still have a long way to go before you can call us that with a straight face. ;)

Regarding an Inuit landsdel, I could definitely see that happening (perhaps incorporating parts of Markland and Norrland as well), but such a thing would likely be several decades off in the future. And yes, we have indeed been quite exceptionally dickish to the natives of the land- today, they've basically been driven entirely out of the south (except for Haroldstad), and most of those who remain are in marginal lands of northern Norrland, Markland, and, of course, Helluland.

EDIT: I know Jehoshua, that third flag is not a proposal, it's merely an illustration requested by Gem Hound in chat. ;) Not only does it break vexillological and heraldic rules, it's also quite ugly and has poor contrast. If I were to do such a map, I'd probably do a simple black nordic cross on a white field, with the north star in the center.

I rather like number 2.

From: Colombia

We are thankful for your backing in this matter.

To: Florida
From: Colombia

The antagonism between Colombia and Venezuela runs deep and the exiled, their children and grandchildren desire nothing more than returning back home to their ancestral lands and the Colombian government is obliged to represent these needs.

The decision is yours, as we said before. Apart from that, we appreciate your thoughtful manner, abstaining from rashly signed commitments.

To echo the Floridians: Negotiations, our Dear Friends.
Perhaps a mutually beneficial political reform could be arranged before further negotiations? This would also allow all parties to amass some financial reserves with which to conduct the transaction. And if we do not wish to live in the shade, then we must certainly be on the best of terms.

Check the background thread. Its linked at the bottom of page 3. :p

Subject: Colombian-Venezuelan Border Dispute

We are enheartened that through negotiations in good faith we have concluded discussions on the first stage of resolving this dispute and creating good relations between your two nations, all without involving any hypothetical power that threatens war and the extermination of peoples and lies about its allies having well-developed war plans, over whatever.
While it is not necessary, if both governments would repeat their statements on political reform (edit: in Venezuela) and the suspending of negotiations until the reforms are complete, it would be a powerful witness to the world of Hispanic brotherhood.

Better if you say Hispanic. We had a hard time trying to push the Spanish out of our countries. :p

Argentina would like to hear more about these proposed reforms in Colombia/Venezuela, to ascertain if they satisfy out concerns.

Turkey is here. Our generous offer to Kurdistan still stands.

OOC: I'm not sure if I want to play as Kurdistan anymore, to be honest. I should have handed things differently in many cases, and the outlook for the nation does not look good regardless of results. If no one (including the GM) has a problem, I would prefer to switch to Paraguay after settling this war. And I probably will just accept your offer, Gamez.
