Hey I've noticed in a few of the threads here recently when people talk about early wars they always say something along the lines of "make sure you leave 1 city", why is this? Do you get a crazy hit to diplomacy or is it for leaving future trade partners?

Also my last 2 games I started next to Japan, he only had 1 city built, but had a huge force, after countering the rush I just marched over the puppet it. Was this bad? I play for CV but really didnt notice much of a diplo hit, after all he declared on me.

Gandhi. Emperor. Aiming for Bollywood CV. Started real close to Songhay, Germans and Koreans further down south. It was two games - the first the Songhay were going for aggro city spam followed by massive sneak attack and they took my cap.

So I decided that this time I was going to be really super aggressive on him instead, because AIs think Gandhi is too easy pickings AND THAT NEEEDS TO BE CHANGED - like, the same moment when my Scarcher discovered Songhay scout and it got the third ruin, I killed it. There, free gold deal after I got another warrior up and running. Then I discovered Germany... with a worker working some salt mine unprotected. I took that opportunity to enslave me some Jermans... and some turns later we had a non-gold peace (but free worker).

That was alright, I still had the Songhay to play with, and since the death of their scout, they had absolutely no outside contact with anyone else till Korean scouts came knocking. So this time... they went Tradition, like me. But just like last time, they settled a city real close to my cap. Or tried to... one of my warriors promptly took that unescorted settler, restarting war with Songhay.

Some turns later, another gold peace deal. I love Askia.

Then I told him to not settle close to me anymore... but he just told me to "brush up my diplomacy"

and settled this city in my face

like a slap to my face

AIs love to pick on Gandhi because of his tall-based UA, and they "know" that too much expansion will cripple his growth so he'd be all peaceful and trying to stay small to spam wonders

But they don't know smallfish at all, it seems

Again, free gold... now with new lux too and a burnt out spam city

And this time, I was all serious business on him. I deprived him of the chance for early contact with everyone else on continent until their scouts came by... so I had a free war or two, so to speak. All that was around... 5 workers and some hundreds of gold with 1 or 2 gpts involved. When they say Legendary Start in settings, they really meant it.

Then some turns during the peace.. Songhay decided expanding meant gobbling up that cultural CS. A big no-no in my books... well actually, his weakness was my opportunity

So the moment Peace Treaty ended, I did what a lot AIs love to do when they have a bigger army and are super aggro

Then I got denounced by Songhay's overseas friend (pic taken before final DOW) because I killed off Askia (good riddance plus I got Stonehenge for Hinduism)

But a better example would be this other fellow, the other witness to the Death of Songhay They Really Deserved It:

He never liked me AT ALL after I took Gao. Lux deals went from 240 to 209 and further down to 172 (refused to stop spying), and Polynesia was always super hostile towards me.

Such that when Sejong actually came to warn me of Bismarck's scheme for world domination, it turns out that he actually brought a friend along

Long story short: massacring civs is a big no-no unless you don't get caught or you just want to be That Warmonger. Try and leave them to one really crappy city.

No, the AI does not think like that at all

I have knocked off many civs and still had excellent relationships with others as the game continued. They never mentioned my warmongering. One of the Civs I destroyed DoWed me. The other I DoWed and had to take their capital, their last city for my own security, because of where the city was located. Anyway no diplo hit. I am glad that is the way it is now vanilla was very annoying, because it would not let you knock off your opponents from the gameboard. What really is what the map is. :)

Ah ok that's what I thought, at first I was worried but as the games progressed I didn't have any warmonger tag. But then I kept reading here that you shouldn't eliminate a civ but I guess they changed it during the patch.

PEACE OUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

The diplo hit for destroying a civ was removed? Really? That's sweet! It was definitely one of my big gripes about warmongering in CiV.

Time to get crackin' :hammer:

EDIT: I guess I was wrong

Bah...

Previously there were many things you could do to piss off the other AI and "peace" only meant not stepping on anyone's toes. Now I think they gave more weight to certain elements (DoF) and less/no punishment for others. I don't know if the warmonger tag works on the same scale as diplomacy in general, but it seems you can counter the hit with enough positive modifiers.

It also seems to matter who the other Civs are. Some seem to throw the warmonger tag around more freely than others.

I've got the same impression. Recently I wiped out a neighbor, the rest couldn't care less. Warmonger hate modifier appeared much later (after DoF expiration I guess). If that's true, I welcome the change, tbh. :)

I love games where I am The Warmonger. I invite anyone to attack me because it makes it soooo much easier wipe them out when I counterattack.

what is legendary start?

what is legendary start?

Go to advanced settings, click on "Resources"

You should see it.

It gives you an "optimum" start for whatever civ you play, but that usually comes with fun stuff like socking you next or in middle of some warmongers

I've taken out Civ's on numerous occasions. At the end of the day, unless you're aiming for a diplo victory, what does it matter ? OK, so you may not get as many RA's as you want, so that just slows you down. When a civ is a real pain, trust wipe it out....

Recently I had a civ that I caught spying 3 times, he tried a cue in 2 of my allied city states, and he was continually trying to wind me up " Oh, how's my favourite city state" or "I just noticed how puny your army is" .... Those type of things.

We went to war and I left him with a 3 pop city in a corner, and he still kept spying etc so I just took him out and razed the city. So what, I got one civ give me some stick, I still went on to win with a CV.

If you need to do it, just do it, unless you were aiming for a DV.

A diplomatic victory is still easily doable as a conquerer. Just have to make peace in time for the vote and since you would lots of gold, get enough them up to allies (if you haven't allied with them previously, which is a good thing to do if you are a conquerer). By that time, anyways, no other civs should compete for city-states.
