While the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

Settings:
 • Victory Condition: Conquest (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
 • Difficulty: Emperor
 • Starting Era: Any
 • Map Size: Standard
 • Map Type: Lakes
 • Speed: Normal
 • Required: No Tribal Villages, No Random Events
 • Civ: Any
 • Opponents: Any
 • Version: 1.74.004, 2.13.004 or 3.19.003
 • Date: 31st January to 25th February 2013
Must not play as Inca.
The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

OK, we are trying something new for this Gauntlet, to try and increase participation. So this is actually 7 gauntlets in one. One for each starting era. The idea is to find out (excluding Inca), which is the most powerful Civ at each starting era to achieve the fastest Conquest victory at Normal speed.

Part of the idea of the Hall of Fame, is that it is like playing in "sand box" mode, ie given all other considerations what is the optimal way to play a given scenario, so let's find out this one!

Over the course of the gauntlet (haven't done it all yet) there will appear on the gauntlet page 7 G-Majors (112a,b,c,d,e,f and g) for each starting era. Each one will be shown differently on the tables (I have just set one up now for time sake).

Part of the idea of doing this as well is to get the talk going again, so get chattering people.

I'll start some discusionn points...

- On ancient speed, is Egypt better than Persia? Egypt start with the wheel while Persia have Immortals. Is there another civ that could compete.
- Even though Praetorians are massively overpowered given their era, can they compete with 2 movement troops?
- Some have said that India's Fast Worker is the best UU of all, at what era does this start to compete with the equivalent era's 2 movement UU?

Enjoy people...

I wonder if you should pick another map besides Pangaea. The ultra-small ones are pretty common and would be required for top finishes.

Thought about this and I'm open to changes. Was thinking Oasis to stop access to horses but like the idea of just a 'sand box' game. Maybe Lakes then??

Yea, Lakes is reasonably small (which is nice cus there are lots of eras to play). But the good thing is, you don't need to run mapmaker.
Oasis is kinda big.

Wouldn't the fast worker be more valuable in later era starts? That is, if everyone starts out with more capacity for power (ie later techs, advanced units), land development is the difference maker. Just my initial thoughts, I might be wrong.

Hey Oz....thought you were gonna talk these up a little more ;)

This should be interesting to follow. Offhand I think the clear cut pick for Persia is Cyrus. Hatty and Rammy are rather evenly matched for Egypt so there may not be a clear cut winner there. I suspect when HAs or better units are used India's FW starts looking better. I'm just wondering if the resourceless dog soldier is ever viable on emperor. Ancient era, I probably bet on Tut. If he dies, figuratively speaking, in a chariot accident and Persia wins out, then so be it.

Have put a post on the main page and started splitting off the gauntlet into individual gauntlets per starting era and lymond, I thought that if you submitted a game, you'd talk it up in the thread here to generate discussion ;)

If by main page, you mean the CFC Home Page, that is one of the most useless pages on this site. As I mentioned before, if you want to draw folks to HOF you need to put feelers in places of higher traffic. You need "Eyes". You will not get them on the Home Page or the HOF forum. You will get them in places like S&T and General. Heck, put a post in the freakin' Stories and Tales forums and get a whole new generation of players to HOF .

The point is breakin' status quo. As far as I've seen so far you have pretty much maintained status quo, with the exception of actually shaking up the Gauntlet a little...and not how I prescribed.

AlanH, as awesome as he is, completely discounted this idea for SGOTM. He did it once and the fact is that it did bring new players to the SGOTM, but he didn't do again - very stuck in his ways. SGOTM is still pretty word of mouth. However, Gumbolt posted a thread and already got several new players in a day. It's y'all's forum, you can post threads anywhere you want to advertise the games. There's certainly no harm in it and it requires minimal effort.

baby steps......

This game plays fast like a Minor. Got a better Ancient finish date with Hatshepsut, even though my most advanced tech was Writing.

Spoiler :
Here was the most epic battle:

Kaitzilla, congratulations on a great War Chariot date (550 BC)!

I don't think anything can beat war chariots for fast Ancient conquest below certain levels.

I used Boudica and GWs on Classical era. I thought it went well. Not sure if war chariots would be good at that era start. AIs still seemed pretty weak but they usually have metals hooked up fast, so that can cause issues. GWs went through the AIs like butter and they move pretty fast. I don't know, Horse Archers may be better to use. The key is getting to the tech fast enough. War chariots on the other hand are available right at the beginning and you will likely catch at least a couple AIs off guard before metals.

Classical start is still war chariot dominion, they're just too quick and powerful i believe. Ren start is justinian reign as proven multiple times, later starts are more intersting to me
