From: Portugal

One of the four destroyers was built for a foreign customer who reneged on their purchase. It will be departed shortly, and is not considered an active part of the Portuguese Navy.

Very well, but be sure it is gone this year.

To: Brazil
From: Spain

We wish to know if you are amenable to signing a Non-Aggression Pact between our nations, lasting for 10 years and extendable.

We also wish to know if you are amenable to increase the trading links between our nations, and to recover the friendship of times past that ended up disappearing because of stupid decisions made by both of us.

To: Brazil
From: Partido Demócrata Cristiano Español

As the main Moralist party in the Spanish Empire, we wish to attend the 1930 Moralist International Conference of Rio de Janeiro.

Indeed. We sign this pact of non-aggression and are willing to improve trade relations with Spain in these trying times. Brazil is devoted to renewed relations with Spain in spite of our recent past, as we have shown by assisting Spain in two successive wars. We will do all in our power to make sure war between our states never happens again and friendship lasts eternally. This pact of friendship shall be known as the Santiago-Souza Pact, may it never fail.

Your participation is very welcome.

@DuneBear: I have three standard questions for an NESer looking for a nation, as listed below:

1. Do you prefer a Western culture or something more exotic?

2. Do you prefer militarism and war or a domestic buildup or something in between?

3. Do you want a nation near other players for greater interaction or a nation further from areas of player relevance?

1. I am more inclined to Western but don't have any problems with exotic cultures.

2. Something in between.

3. A nation closer to other nations. It seems to me that interaction between other players would make this more enjoyable.

I picked Afghanistan because it seemed some what out of the way but not totally isolated (with Russia, Persia, and India around). Room for improvement as well. But seeing as this is my first NES another nation would probably suit me better so I can learn the ropes.

To Brazil
From: The Holy See

An Ecclesiastical delegation shall be sent from the Holy See as usual in order to elucidate the Church's social doctrine to the world's moralist parties in order that they may continue the renewal they propose of their societies with the clear teaching of the Catholic Faith. In particular the Holy See has a particular interest in further explaining the necessity of charity in truth as expressed in His Holiness' recent encyclical, and discussing the universal value of such teaching to all peoples, even those not of the Catholic Faith.

The Holy See also applauds the commitment to non-aggression established between Spain and Brazil, and hopes such an act of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence amongst Catholic nations may be an example to all nations and their peoples of the need to put aside petty grievances and the troubles of the past in order to forge a better future for a greater good.

ooc: @ Crezth: Since its Columbia I picture the Archbishop of said city having the accent and voice of Zachary Hale Comstock, although obviously ideology is different, the good archbishop is not so much racist as he is against enemies of america and its judaeo-christian foundation as he sees it when he says what he says, afterall being an Archbishop he is likely to be staunchly orthodox in his beliefs, racism would be contrary to the Church's teaching ;)

To: Oranjien
From: South Africa

To our most illustrious friends and neighbors.
Please by all that is holy help us in our predicament.

ooc: all that is holy? I seem to recall that the insurrection is a direct 'reap what you sow" cause and effect situation. South Africa engaged in what is little more than the theft of non-white lands, and yet now you wonder why the native population is ill at ease? Not to mention the broader context was initiated by the British/South Africans, not by natives, hardly convincing grounds for Orangien to get involved one would think unless of course they fear a non-white regime would be an existential threat and that South Africa and the great British Empire actually cannot address an uprising of native peasants.

ooc:Surly the gentleman of Oranjien will see that helping a fellow apartheid reign is ultimately in there benefit, or reign are after all a kindred spirits with the same kind of discriminatory system. If they look at it from a logical, 21th century humanistic point of view then they would undoubtedly think ,,services you right, you sick basted,,. For my part, I but my faith in that they are racist bastard that are horrified by the very idea of blacks getting ,,uppity,, and shooting at white people.

South Africa finds it unfortunate that Brazilia has adopted hostile stand towards our nation. We as a peaceful nation abhor the deterioration of relation as Brazilia starts to practice anti-white imperialism in Africa.

It has been the policy of Brazil for over 20 years that white rule in Africa at the expense of the natives is immoral. The sudden acceptance of this by South Africa and Britain shows deep rooted problems in the European system.

The aggressive stance towards a nation that has been nothing but friendly towards your nation is hearth braking for all people that value peace and coexistence. South Africa thinks Brazilia should look towards the Prince of Peace instead of judging South Africa though the lenses of your destructive and unfounded ideas.

Brazil thinks the South African government would have a number of things to answer for to the British government, and will thus leave this alone. But we do not support racist regimes that keep the free people of Africa down.

Yeah, Brazil never ever supported Angola in any way.

I imagine there's like a double standard like "Brazilian Truth" or something now. No doubt there's a "Brazilian Victory"-a great defeat, but something one claims is actually a major victory despite none of the goals that were desired being accomplished

Lucky's actually pretty accurate here, if I understand correctly. Angola was shockingly progressive, compared to the rest of contemporary Africa. Don't jump to assuming that we're completely the same as OTL, it's a bad assumption to make.

Angola could be seen as shockingly christian you know ;) depends on ones retrospective point of view. Moralism does provide the context for such an interpretation of the constitutional establishment of Angola.

True!

Anyway, for something completely different, I did a little population map of Vinland. I've coloured it to look a bit like one of those 'Earth at Night' shots, but that's mostly just for decorative effect.
