[Religion and Revolution]: Bugs and Todos

@TimStarboy:

Please try the following.

1. Create a clean installation of Civ4Col Vanilla.
(Without having overwritten Vanilla Files with RaR.)

2. Remove Religion and Revolution from ...\My Games\Civilization IV Colonization\MODS
(Actually that is not the best place to put a mod for Civ4Col.)

3. Instead put Religion and Revolution in <Installation_Directory_Vanillla>\Mods
(If "\Mods" does not exist there, create it. This is the best location for a Civ4Col mods.)

4. Make sure, that the mod directory is called exactly Religion_and_Revolution as it is when unzipping the download.
(All of your friends should have the same name of the mod directory if you want to play RaR together.)

-------

If you and your friends all install RaR exactly this way, I believe there is a good chance that you might be able to play it in MP together.

Otherwise it is really as I had heard from some befriended Civ4 Modders when they told me that Steam has simply killed MP with Mods by removing Direct IP with its latest updates.
(Although I do not understand why they should do something like that.)

If my advice above does not help, the only other solution I would suggest:
Buy CD installation version of Civ4:Colonization. It has become really cheap.

Guys do you think I can contribute by paying for Steam version for you?

No, we do not accept money.
We are modding just for fun.

What's wrong with it? I have used that location for all colo mods without any issues and I like it better than messing around inside install dir. I prefer to keep that location completely vanilla. Also the default install location is program files, which can lead to permission issues.

There are civ4 mods, which crash at startup if loaded from my documents, but to my knowledge no colo mods will do that.

What's wrong with it?

For example that it already has caused problems in MP in the past. :)
Those problems could then be solved by using the \mods directory in <Installation_Directory_Vanillla> as I suggested.

Also the default install location is program files, which can lead to permission issues.

Installing Civ4Col (or any other game) in \Program Files as you pointed out, is a stupidity I would never do.
(I always install my games into a separate directory \games in the root of my main drive which is on SSD.)

I have used that location for all colo mods without any issues ...

Then you were lucky.

I know about several people with special characters in their names. (e.g. Spanish or Asian people)
Installing the mod in \MyGames caused problems for them. (e.g. with Icons displayed wrong)

I have heard many reports over the years, where the \Mods directory in \MyGames caused problems,
but not one single report where the \Mods directory in the installation path of Vanilla caused problems.

Also, I once did very basic performance tests years ago with both variants.
The variant I suggested was a bit better. (But that might also be related to the special way I installed Civ4Col and the mods I use.)

Last but not least I had discussions with some very experienced Civ4 modders. They also told me as well about several (rare) problems with \MyGames.
(e.g. the crashes you mentioned but also other issues)

Simply trust my many years of experience in Civ4Col modding. :)

Usually installation in "MyGames" is ok, but installation in "installation path of Vanilla" is simply better (since it has shown to cause less problems).

From what I have read so far it looks like they removed all network code other than SteamWorks. It's a gigantic mistake as it makes no sense from a technical point of view and kills network compatibility with the CD version. Placement of mod or placement of install dir makes no real difference.

There is this thread on the official 2K forum about bringing direct IP connect back and there is no official reply yet. People complain about civ4, not colo. Maybe it would be a good idea to sign up and state that people actually care for colonization too.

I completely agree, but there are 2 different aspects here:

1. Steam version players not being able anymore to play MP games with CD version players.
2. Steam version players not being able anymore to play MP games with other Steam version players when using mods

1. is already stupid, but might be intentional to Steam strategy
2. is incredibly stupid since it would ruin Steam sales of Civ4 and Civ4:Col

Most people still playing Civ4 or Civ4:Col only play these games with / because of mods.
Why should anybody continue to buy Steam versions of those games when having such big disadvantages ???

Since TimStarboy and his friends are still able to play MP with Vanilla, I believe that this possible solution might work for them.

Well, we will see what TimStarboy will report.

Just to clarify:

1. You are still able to play MP with Vanilla ?
2. You are not able to play MP with RaR although you did as I suggested here ?

Please answer my questions.

1. You are still able to play MP with Vanilla ?
2. You are not able to play MP with RaR although you installed the mod as I suggested here ?

Hm, then I have no idea for any other solution than buying the CD version. :(

In Germany this can be done really cheap.
(e.g. here or here)

However, I have no idea how this looks like for people living outside of Europe or USA. :dunno:

Maybe if enough people complain Steam might enable Direct IP again.
(Although I would not bet on that.)

There is a bug in the colopedia page for the Cuirassier profession (see screenshot). None of the information is displayed.

This doesn't happen when you play either the Russians, or visit the Colopedia from the Main Menu, in which case all information appears, including an image of a Russian cuirassier. But if you play another nation, everything disappears.

I think there's probably something wrong in the CIV4UnitArtStyleTypeInfos.xml file. Maybe the entries for the cuirassiers of each nation there refer to wrong art files?:dunno:

Ingame (on map) the graphics of Cuirassiers seem to work.
(Had seen them for several Nations already during my tests.)

But I remember we already had a similar bug considering Colopedia before.
(Graphics were working fine on map but buggy in Colopedia.)

Well, I guess Schmiddie will figure this out. :)

hey Ray
you gave up on me?
don't ask me how but we have downloaded CD version and mod works with it ok
but there is a big bug which remained
when in multiplayer mode if you try to "bargain for higher price" computers lose sync
can you fix that?

Good to hear. :)

can you fix that ?

Problem is, that I don't play MP and also cannot test it.

But I can have a look anyways.
Maybe Nightinggale will also have a look.

Thanks for reporting.

Edit:

I took a look and cannot find anything wrong.
(At least not by just checking code and having no possibility to provoke the bug to debug.)

The code is commented with this:
(Just improved / unified commenting of that feature a bit.)

Code:
// R&R, ray, Bargaining - Start

This is not a problem of our current Version 2.1!

It is a general problem and occurs to all nations and all military professions (except Units with vanilla animations...I will not explain the details here). Just this: The problem cannot be solved so far without changing most of the graphics (everything is correct in the xml files).

However, it exists since at least 1.4 - so it should be no problem since you are the first one who noticed this issue... :D

After our big military update (Version 2.2 or 2.3) this problem will be solved due to graphic / animation changes. So we don't need to change anything here now.

Ok.
