The Great DoC UHV v 1.12 challenge

Strategy:
Since I did so bad in score I will tell you the strategy until 1700AD, when I was in the second place and France was over me only because of a vassal.

Discovering catholicism needs a great prophet. The great prophet will discover only the 1010 beakers, so you need to discover the rest from research. Make sure to do it before the great prophet spawn.

The second goal means conquering Newt-Rst and discover Calendar in time. Possible minor cities in red sea will probably autoraze at some collapse. The only strategic resource available is the horse in Muqdisho (or the iron in South Africa, but it is a little far away). You need to buy either mathematics or calendar to do it in time, so contact India and Tamils to increase your chances.

In 1500AD the only colonies in Africa will be Portugal's TD event. Make sure to discover gunpowder and send your Askaris to liberate east Africa and Mbanza Kongo.

The research problem:
The main problem I didn't manage to solve is the research rate. It is too small. I controlled Catholic, Orthodox, Islamic Shrine, the Temple of Solomon. I built banks, grocers, markets, courts, libraries, lighthouses in all holy cities but... I entered industrial era in 1850AD

I suspect I should beeline capitalism and free market. But then I should postpone discovering chemistry.

However, even then the problem may remain. USSR was almost in modern era in 1900AD and dominated the score, was 1000 points in front of the second rival.

is it necessary to get Zoriastrianism? How are you dealing with the 20 temples in 700 AD requirement? there just isnt enough space.

It is not necessary. I didn't try it in this version but I think it is possible to get Christianity instead (with beeline and some luck).

Like citis said, you can also just get 10 cities (some will be crap) and Kajuharo, and this alternative might actually be the only viable solution in higher difficulties.

As for China, conquering them is not worth it if they are thriving, but like I described in my game report it is very doable to re-conquer them 10 turns after their respawn provided you never stop reinforcing your army (you will need a dozen units), although in my case it helped tremendously that there was 1 city in China they didn't get on the respawn (lots of troops waited there for the grace period to be over).

wow, the Mongol core has really been shrunk since I last played. Fortunately, it didn't matter too much for the UHV, but a Domination now seems rather impossible for them :(
(I had the maximal negative expansion stability after taking a few chinese cities -.- )

anyway:

This is much easier on slower speeds, I was really afraid not to make it in time, since I made some (minor) mistakes:

1. Trade with Korea/Tibet/Japan/Mughals during your first few turns. (get Drama from Korea, I made the mistake of not buying it, being able to convert beakers into culture helps a lot)
2. Don't even try to research. Go for Spionage & Money, unless you got Drama, then try to produce a ton of culture (for the borderpops which give your more land area)
3. I switched to Slavery & Warrior Code (for faster Ger/Barracks-Building) before switching over to Levy Armies after I had my Gers in the Chinese cities
4. Take China (obviously^^), build Warriors in all cities until you get the Chinese Iron (they will help with the early unhappiness and can be used as city guards eventually)
5. only build Keshiks in your cities after building a few Barracks&Gers, exception: Chinese coastal cities should produce your Galleys to take over Japan (and possibly more if you have the time)
6. after ~1400 build settlers in your core and the northernmost Chinese cities, they can help you claim a lot of the Siberian tundra.

Pretty sure it can be won ~5-10 turns earlier (or much earlier on Marathon), but still, I am somewhat proud ;)

PS: I am playing an Indonesian Game where I had a virtual victory before 1400AD, just need to play it out (I am trying to get a domination victory, but that seems almost impossible), so expect another entry soonish :)

Almost all European UHVs(on Paragon/Normal) are done, except for Viking, Prussia and probably Moor. I did Viking just before the 1.12 release and it was as easy as Mongolia. Moorish UHV is quite feasible since their UU comes earlier now. Don't know about Prussia though. If someone can finish them we'll have a whole collection.:king:

And I forgot Rome. It was done but not on P/N.

AAAAND Italy, which I think is the hardest.

Edit: damn, I was thinking of the Paragon Strategy thread. Some victories there are slightly before the 1.12 release, so we are also missing Spain and France. Redoing them isn't fun so we need someone other than JustAnotherNerd to finish the games.

Alexander was born too early:

Greece also conquered Kalhu and Shushan.
Which eventually lead to collapse after Phoenicia spawned and Babylon respawned.

Imhotep built the Lighthouse in Amunia and Moses did great work in Aarru Hetep.

Have you used WB or chipotle? This victory won't be accepted.
And what version is it? Probably something before 1.12 because India has the wrong colour.

How do you guys enable independents states in scoreboard and which of the two are they?

Ctrl + Alt + O. It's somewhere in the options there, probably under 'Scoreboard' or whatever its called.

I didn't use worldbuilder or chipotle (whatever it is). The screenshots were taken after the victory.

I downloaded 1.12 immediately after Leoreth uploaded it. I didn't know that I have to update it.

Strategy:
Korea is easy except the printing Press goal. China is your enemy here, it will be stronger than you and has high chances to discover printing press before you. If Korea had enough production the best strategy would be conquering China.

But, since China is too strong, I think the best strategy is conquering Chinese coastal cities. Three short wars, amphibious invasion, quick capture, pay some 50-100 gold (you earned more at capture) for peace. You will gain access to more resources and production, two additional cities with confucianism and buddhism present, bronze and stone (double production of cathedrals). I noticed that the best promotion for hwachas is city raider, chinese units may be too strong for barage to have effect.

Try to win the UHV before mongol spawn, else prepare an army to survive! Sooner or later they will discover your pitty core cities, fortify points don't have powers in that case!

As the game progresses it seems I lose the opportunity to gain high scores . The main reason for my law score is the small amount of cities I controlled, but when you control the naval terror in indonesia who bothers for oversea colonies? :D

Alternative strategies:
Korea spawns early enough with currency and calendar. Building a Korean colonial empire in east Asia and Australia may be an alternative strategy, but noone has tried it (or sb has tried it and abandoned it).

still having problems with the Indian uhv, on regent even. i can do the temples consistently [grabbing taoism helps], but the pop goal is unobtainable. i conquered tamil, khmer, and indonesia and settled all over their cores in every spot, and still was at 17.5 % pop, thanks to a vibrant China.

the third goal really is just contingent on conquering China's coastal zone. I don't think its fun or even makes any sense. and you definitely cant go west, because that's the Seljuk no-no zone.

maybe look into adjusting it? 15 % pop is enough.

Finish Date: 1475 AD
Score: 34900

In short, I used my starting units to force Byzantium back to the Balkans, and took as many independent cities as I could. Then with these cities I built up an army of Camel Archers and didn't fall behind in research. After dealing the Seljuks I headed west to take the Maghreb and Spain. Spain capitulated and I took all Moorish land. Then as I came back to deal with Ottoman and Mughal they all capitulated. I took the Indian subcontinent and liberated it to the Mughals. To finish the 40% Islamic population goal I took Italy and capitulated France, while sending missionaries all over Europe. The goal was achieved when I took a few cites in the New World and triggered the plague there.

20% is ok. Do you focus on food to all cities? Do you avoid slavery? Have you farmed everything? Have you discovered calendar? Did all your cities reached the maximum pop pontential? Are all your cities happy and healthy?

15% is too low, you can have this percentage from the start to the end of the game. The only reason 20% is difficult is because of plague. You can go and conquer Persia and use an army of war elephants if needed. 17% seems low to me, maybe your citizents are lazy specialists instead of hard-working farmers.

this one was a bit weird:

Spoiler :
doc-paragon-byzantium-uhv.png

When I started, Rome was already collapsed, Egypt owned 6 cities but collapsed immediately after I took Babylon from them, Carthago collapsed after I gave them a tech and since there was Buddhism in Constantinople, I decided to go for the Shewdagon.
This unfortunately prevented me from building the Apostolic Palace and except for the Borobodur didnt give me any useful wonders (in the end however I would have gotten all the nice Muslim wonders), so in hindsight not worth it. It did however mean that I got along pretty well with everyone.
Maintenance costs on Paragon are huge and since I only got 1 Great Merchant (pretty late, so I had to settle for 1800 Gold), I basically could not research for more than ~5 turns before 1000 AD -> I got Engineering just after the Seljuk Spawn and got Gunpowder the turn the Ottomans appeared.
Barbs were a huge problem and I can really understand why the Romans just gave up: at one time there appeared 2 stacks of a total of 13 barbs right outside Rome - far too much for my defenders that were still wounded from repelling 5 Horse Archers the 2 turns before. "Terraforming" the Greek/Balkan-countryside was also almost impossible untill after the first Euros started to spawn.

The Virtual victory was just for fun, I don't really think a virtual victory before the Turkish spawn should count, but anyway, this could easily be beaten, it was more of an afterthought to go for it. My play overall was far from perfect and more along the lines of "good enough" ;)
