A World of Media 2
The Box Office
Hello and welcome to all. You may have played my breakout game over the summer, 'A World of Media'.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=530073
However it never truly got off the ground due to timing and such. From feedback, it appears that interest did and still does run strong for such a genre, so I am reviving the name for this game, a sequel that is focused on an aspect of Media that was mostly a sideshow in the original: Movies and the Box Office.
Like the original, there are two possible roles: Movie Studio CEO and Movie Producer.
The Studio
You are a company, or a branch of a company, a subsidiary, whatever suits your fancy. Your job is to find the next big blockbuster, arrange the purchase of rights, produce the movie, then market it and make a killing off the Box Office. It is the more involved part of this game, but nothing as time consuming as the original TV schedule will be involved in this game.
The Producer
Your dream is to be the next big shot, the next man (or woman) with the next blockbuster. Let the light bulb go off in your head, put your idea down on paper, market it to the Movie Studios, and negotiate for the best price you can. You can even negotiate to have a hand in the actual production of the movie, such as choosing the director or other tactical moves.
Your movie wasn't chosen by a Studio for the big screen? Go to private investors (NPCs) for a loan and go the independent route to make your name. Enter your film into Film festivals and attempt to win a prize to get your name recognized. After the festival, release it on dvd and see if you can make a profit after repaying your investors. A messier version, one where the Studio doesn't take care of everything for you, but a route that many consider the more artistic and as such even big name Producers who have made several blockbusters often enter something into a film festival.
Signing Up
Spoiler :
Name:
Studio/Company Name:
Notoriety: How notorious you are in the film industry. For Studios, how rich are you and what caliber of films have you produced? For producers, have your ideas made it to the big screen, and if so how did they do? Have you won awards at film festivals? All of this contributes to what 'level' of film notoriety you have, with each level being named for some famous or not so famous producer, and certain categories of Film Studios.
You start as Independent as a Studio and a High School Dropout as a Producer.
NOTE: Only 3-4 Film Studios available at the beginning.
Spoiler :
Studios:
Big 5
Little 3
Poverty Row
Independent
Producers:
Steven Spielberg
Peter Jackson
J.J. Abrams
Full Sail University Film Student
High School Dropout
Bank: How much cash you have in the bank that you can use to invest immediately.
Debt: How much you owe investors, other players, etc.
Directors: 2-3 Directors you create. These will be added to the pool of directors that can be hired to direct a film, and by creating some yourself I don't have to create them all.
Actors: 3-5 actors you create. These will be added to the acting pool and can be offered roles in films, and by each player creating some I don't have to create them all. More will be detailed later.
Background: Optional.
Creating a Movie Pitch (Producers)
Spoiler :
The first thing you need to think about is the genre. What do you want to make? Action? Comedy? Thriller? Documentary? Its all up to you.
But I am getting ahead of myself. A typical Movie Pitch will fit this format:
Movie Name:
Genre:
Log Line:
Caliber:
Desired Specialization:
Budget:
Suggested Director:
Stars:
Suggested Actors:
Plot:
Movie Name
Fairly obvious, what you will name your movie.
Genre
Genre will be extremely important, both in the creation and production aspects of the film as well as how well it does in the box office. Following is a list of the mainstream genres for reference:
Some will naturally take more money to produce than others, such as Action, Science Fiction and War, for some of the biggest budgets. However Romance or Comedy might be cheap to produce, they will also typically earn less at the Box Office, meaning there is a different scale of what means success based on the Genre and the budget.Action
Adventure
Comedy
Crime and Gangster
Drama
Epics/Historical
Horror
Musical
Romance
Science Fiction
War
Westerns
Genre will also affect what Directors and Actors are best for your film. Mismatching genres could lead to bad performance at the box office due to bad reviews.
Log Line
One sentence that describes your film and draws a potential Film Studio or Private Investor in.
Caliber
The intended Caliber of the movie. Do you intend it to be the beginning of the next Avengers franchise? Rival Harry Potter? A- or A might be needed. B is more for the good films that aren't blockbusters, while C and below might struggle to get on the big screen at all.
Desired Specialization
Veterans may remember this from the first game. This is what you envision the crew as specializing in. In this game, this will be heavily influenced by the choice of Director, however this could also complement their specialization, or something else. This can be anything from Overall Quality, to Best Soundtrack, Best Audio, etc. In general, it should correspond to some Oscar Award Category (Awards will be given out in this game).
Budget
Your Budget is what you envision the movie costing, and will likely come from me most of the time. Or you can wing it, guestimate, and let the Studio take the fall as your movie goes over budget and flops. All because you didn't consult the GM. I will be laughing.
Suggested Director
You can suggest a particular director to the TV Studio, and if you have enough clout you can even refuse to sell the rights to the movie unless a particular Director is hired.
Stars
How many actors will be billed as Stars? These are the main characters in your movies and will decide how many actors you or the Studio will need to hire.
Suggested Actors
What Actors you suggest/insist are hired for certain roles.
Plot
This is where you detail your plot. It can be anything from a paragraph to an in depth essay. Either is fine and neither will affect your performance at the box office or anything. Longer ones will give me more material for reviews in the update if thats how I decide to update.
The Sale
Spoiler :
That is what you need to come up with to create a movie pitch. From here you can negotiate the sale of your pitch to a Film Studio, control what up front money you make, whether you make some percentage of the Box Office sales or not, what aspects of the film you have control over (such as the Director or Actors), etc.
Studios, this is when you hunt for the most attractive looking movie and bid to get the rights to it. Then the real work begins.
Producing a Movie
Spoiler :
You, either a Studio with the rights to a Movie or a Producer creating an independent film, have the Movie Pitch as a baseline. As a Studio you can change anything that wasn't locked down in contract, although angering producers (especially one good enough that you bought something from them) is often a bad strategy for future purchases.
The Studio Budget
Each Studio will have their own budget. You start with $0. Know why? You can go into debt in this game. Massive debt. And it will be this debt that will cause your Studio to crash and burn, because the Box Office is unforgiving. If you can't turn a profit on your films, recouping the money to pay back the debt you accrued making the film, and then make a tidy profit for yourself, then no bank or investor will have faith in you. You won't be able to borrow money. Without the ability to borrow, you will be unable to make more movies. Then you will go bankrupt, and game over for you.
As such, each Studio can decide how to budget a movie, disregarding the prediction of the GM to the expenses if they like. The movie may still go over budget no matter what. And remember that cutting costs can frequently cut the quality as well.
Choosing a Director
The choosing of a Director can sometimes make or break a movie. Some actors won't perform well without the right type of director. Sometimes a Director will be unused to high budget films and overspend drastically, putting you in a sticky situation. Or a Director could be given a movie out of his area of expertise (genre) and just screw it up.
Therefore each director has the following information:
Name:
Notoriety:
Salary:
Nationality:
Caliber:
Genre:
Specialization:
Temperament:
Name is obvious, Notoriety is level 1 to 5 with 5 being the most, salary is how much he costs per year of production, Caliber is how good of a director in general he is from A-F, Genre is his Genre specialty, Specialization is the Crew Specialization he specializes in such as Audio, Visual, etc.
Temperament is a new term for the game. The rest you have seen before above. Temperament is an important trait of the director that will affect his movies. Perhaps he has anger issues. Such a trait may drive some actors to fall apart while others may revel in the motivation. Frugal could be a trait, or motivator, former actor, gentle, etc. There is no set list.
It is important you understand this because you will be creating NPC directors for me. 2-3 per person will be plenty to give a good variety.
Choosing a Specialization
You can choose a specialization your director doesn't have, but less likely to get an award and will be more expensive.
Choosing Actors/Actresses
Much like the Director although less so, actors and actresses and make or break a movie. Acting is huge and no matter how good the movie is, if your people can't act well, it will flop. You will also be creating actors and their info, which is simpler than directors:
Name:
Beauty:
Salary:
Nationality:
Caliber:
Genre:
Temperament:
Beauty is how attractive they are, sometimes an important attribute. Other than that, they are the same as directors. I should note that posting thumbnail sized pictures of your created actors and actresses can be helpful to put a face to the name that will be in your movies, but it is not required. You can also use pictures of either real actors and actresses or just random photos.
Also, I should note I will be assigning the salary cost for directors and actors.
Production
Production of the movie is kind of hands off once you choose all the factors. What will happen, will happen. Most movies take 1 turn (1 year) to be produced, and sometimes delays will cause them to take longer. Some movies will even start off at 2 years, and rarely 3.
I must note that Turn 0 will start the game. Then all the movie creation will happen, Studios will buy movie rights, etc. Turn 1 update will have no Box Office Results. The next turn will consist of the same deal as the first, except the movies first produced will be going into Theaters, meaning the Turn 2 update will display the first results. So be careful, by the time you get money back you will already be deep in the hole. Now if you are making an independent film, yours WILL be in the update because of Film Festivals which will be posted as options and you will put your film in one or a couple of these in the hope of awards, notoriety, and cash prizes. Any dvd sales if you go that route from the festival will come the next turn, when the box office results come out.
Foreign Sales
Sometimes a movie may include controversial content, and be banned in certain countries. Sometimes that sam controversial content could make it a blockbuster on domestic shores. You have to play it by ear, but beware that international sales might end up being a large part of your income. You might even want to market your movie specifically for the international market instead of american viewers, which can be done in a variety of ways, such as choosing an international Director or actor, or using a movie pitch from a producer that is famous internationally because of previous blockbusters or independent film festivals.
The Box Office
Once your movie is finally at the Box Office, there is little left you can do except spend yet more money on advertising. Just pray and hope you break even, and if your lucky, get rich and famous.
However you do have to schedule the slot the movie will premiere in. There will be 3 slots throughout the year: Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Christmas Day. You have to choose which slot you want your movie to premiere in. Be careful, if you put 2 movies in the same slot they will be competing against each other as well as your competitors. It is up to you whether you want to match your big blockbuster against the competitions big blockbuster, or go for a mismatch that might result in a higher box office total against weaker rivals. Different genres might also be more successful at certain times of the year.
The year is 2015.

I believe that is all, so sign up and enjoy. I will add more as necessary.
