I dug through the Civ 4 and Civ 4 Colonization download areas for anything remotely useful for the civs I have planned.

Have you looked through the unit art of the Civ4Col mod Religion and Revolution? There are custom units for around 30 different pre-colonial American nations in there. Look for a subfolder called Native_Nations.
