Wasn't Civ 1 or 2 made available as a free download from the maker?

No, I'm not looking for a link to a warez version. I could have sworn a while back the maker made Civ 1 (possibly 2) available for free download from their site.

I might be very wrong on that though, it could have been a different classic game I'm thinking of.

Simple yes or no will do I suppose.

Maybe as a demo, but I don't remember such a thing.

Nope, never ever. Even most sites offering Abandonware up to now do include a reminder that the "Civ"s are still for sale or Copyright protected by the IDSA and therefore not available for download.

Damn my memory.

I know one of the old "classic" DOS games was made available free, I just can't remember what it was.

I wonder why they haven't released civ 1 yet. I think if they released colinization they could release civ1 which is about just as old as colinization.

There is FreeCiv. Not made by Microprose or Firaxis, but it is very similar to Civ1. I don't know where you can get it though.

Even older :)

I have bought a civilization only two years ago.. But my cd is lost. :(

'Centurion: Defender of Rome' is abandonware

the October 2001 issue of computer games magazine had the full civ 1 on the cd that came with it. This was when civ 3 was released so there was a big preview and stuff. I just wonder how they got to distribute it...

By paying a huge royalty to MicroProse, or whoever at the time was holding the Civ1 copyright. As it was Sid, I'm guessing it was Firaxis.

Of course, by that time, they might have set up a license specifically for that to promote Civ3.

I got my original copy for free heeheh, ingenious that was in the days when all you needed was the files BUT if you didn't know the civ advances(or had the rulebook) then the game could just shut down on you.. but after you played it for a while it wasn't hard to know what was what.

So I just transfered the files(yah the statute is over by now, atleast in the us)

Wow

of course my comp died on me after a few days of nonstop playing, I ALMOST played around with basic but no noo CIV came first.. UNTIL THE COMP DIED

also its fun to play colonization.. honestly these games should be provided to people civ2 is far more available then civ1 but abandonwhere??

cid mieser games have been great as for FREE.. civ 2 is generally accessable by warez civ net is WONDERFUL honetly if your looking for a near civ1 copy civnet is the modern thing to get it may not be vintage but it is the same game concept

CIV3 gold looks great but its copy protections looks... well good. *sniff* now my computer wont die in retrospect.

as for civ3 conqueror or whatever its called i havn't tried it yet I heard its not like the clasic civ game.

but civ3 gold looks great. THERE IS SO much addition things that can go for this game and itd be great if there was a plugin capability where you could add more units (in addition) or special effects(like new governments or disasters etc..) or minor rule addons not as clicables but as plugins where you could just throw them in.. like patches but I geuss that would sorta be programing

I *HEX HEX* am definately a person taht feels games should have like a 4 year profit life after that its a free for all. anyway if this post doesn't get deleted I did wanna say

civ1 is NOT complex no HACK requirted on it just transfer the files and hit civ.exe

civ 2 lots of versions oddly the 3d at first was really disorienting which leads me to believe it was just a clever plought to reinforce drunken subjects

civ looks GREAT BUT I CANT GET THROUGH IT(dont mind me I'm a bum great game)

oh and I'm not asking for warez of CIV3 gold (well here heeheh) but does anyone know where i can find a copy of GK2 on the net that game was so good and I can't FIND IT ANYWHERE.. note civ4 should have a gkciv GKCIV that game would rock and if anyone makes it you gotta send me a copy that doesn't crash my computer(well heavin is soon coming I shall have my fill of civ there OR ELSE I SHALL BE ANTICHRIST ON EARTH!!!! no its not an ultimatum and yes this is a reallly long post)
