Here are some minoan city graphics.

crete_ma2.jpg

I'll explain some choices I made ;)

- I choosed not to design a growing palace but a growing city around a palace. I tried the first option but I was not satisfied with the result.

- For middle-age, I took my cycladic city graphics. I just replaced the temple on the hilltop. Now, there are some minoans ruins. I kept the other classical greek temple because Creta has both influences.

- YES, these cities are bright :D It may seem selfish but I like it that way and the first reason I made these graphics is to use them. I decided to share it because some could like it. If anybody wants to make a less bright version, feel free.

Did the Minoans even exist? I mean weren't they from the Greek Myth "Theseus and the Maze of the Minotaur"? I've heard that the Minoans, and even the Labyrinth, did indeed exist....If the labyrinth existed, maybe the Minotaur did as well.....

Yes, the existed. They were a major civilization on the island of Crete. The Minoans were significantly advanced, as they even had running water and flush toilets long before any other civilization.

I doubt there was a Minotaur, though. No such thing as a half-man, half-bull. Unless a Minoan princess actually got too drunk and too frisky at one time... :D

Minoans -

The Minoan Age is before the Mycenaean age. The Minoan civilization was fairly advanced and engaged in extensive trade with Egypt (there are records of it in Egypt). The Minoans were sailors whose navy dominated the seas due to their use of archers (there are paintings of this and Crete was known for archer through the classical era).

While the Greeks had simple one or two room buildings, the Minoans built palaces that had many rooms leading from one to another. The term "labyrinth" means the house of the axe. The Minoans used a double headed axe as one of their symbols - frescoes found in the ruins use the symbol extensively. Greeks who came from their two room buildings to the palaces at Crete were likely to get lost quickly and think them a maze.

The Minoans also featured the bull extensively. Minotaur simply means the bull of Minos.

Visiting Knossos is something really special. Standing there, in the middle of the ruins, you understand the myth of the labyrinth. :)
