Improved Territory Borders

What this does is change the standard dot-and-shadow territory borders to something wholly new.

Many have used dots to make borders, and at least the corners align and are seamless.

Many have tried with solid lines, as opposed to using dots, but that always ends up getting stuck on an inherent limitation of the engine itself - the world is built left to right, top to bottom, and as territory doesn't have corners, you end up with overlaps every time the border turns. Ugly, either due to a single color or when you see a stripe on the corner.

And then you have the issue of 'which is inside?' where you have a maze of thin little lines that make keeping track of where the frontier actually is very frustrating at 3am. There's one that I wanted to use, had seen in the 'city fort' war academy document, but had not been able to find, that used two lengths of dark-color lines for the interior territory, and a heavy line on the border itself. It worked okay until you hit a turn—acute angles turn into grids and obtuse angles are bare

This was designed to eliminate all that, and to do so in a way that wouldn't offend, vex or stress the eye.

Check-Border.jpg

As you can see, I used a large check pattern that shows no perceptible seams (if you look reeealy hard, there's an extra vertical line of pixels on the corners pointing North and South).

To indicate which side is the interior border, I created large triangles pointing to the inside that are fairly easy to identify over virtually all terrain. I've also meticulously hand-crafted the terrain-contoured segments.

Give me some feedback here; I might consider trying a 'razorwire fence' , 'concrete wall' or 'sandbag' border theme. I'd also like to feel out a 'photorealistic' modpack, but that's just a pipe dream.

TECHINFO: Graphics pack in use is snoopy's terrain mod pack. Not tested with anything but snoopy's or vanilla Civ 3, use at your own risk.

looks cool. Dunno how it will react with the irrigation i use tho... most borders come out with a rash!

Indeed, these look really good and I think I'll use 'em.

Pounder, crimson238, slozenger, Dease, Mithadan, thanks for your replies, and I'm glad you like it. I'm especially flattered that such old hands as yourselves would consider this to be the first mod you install.

I just wish I had a better pic to show it off with. :D

Over a hundred downloads now, but very little feedback.

People, please; if you got this and liked it, or have a change to suggest, let me know!

I also have psd files for two different, smaller check patterns. Want shadows on this thing somewhere? Want me to make them look like they're floating? Think they're awful? Let me know!

Even if it's just 'Great Job JJ!' or 'Bleh, they're okay,' or 'u suck u sucky suckface. ur like a squid u suck so much,' I'll be happy to see what you think. C'mon, I need my fix!

Well brother, I am going to download these and give them a look-see in my Hellenstic Kingdoms scenario. I'm curious how they'll show up there as compared to the borders I'm using now. I'll post a screenshot later.

i notice at rivers theres a problem. tho this might be more acute with blue borders...

I lurk the C&C thread all of the time but have not been inspired to download anything until I saw these. Can you tell me how or point me in the right direction on how to properly add these to my game? Can I use these with any save? Can I use them in a SG if the others are not using them? How do I get to snoopies terrain? Did I understand you correctly that these only work with vin CivIII?

Looks okay to me...I put a screenshot up on my Hellenistic thread, showing the most border-intense area on my map. I'll see how it looks as I get things fleshed out but so far I like it. Shows up very well and the colors are easily defined.

Thanks!

Can you tell me how or point me in the right direction on how to properly add these to my game?

Put the single file in your directory Civ III>Art>Terrain.
Replace or back up the original Territory.pcx

Can I use these with any save?

Yes, all they change is the graphics of the borders prior to game drawing them.

Can I use them in a SG if the others are not using them?

I do not see why not.

How do I get to snoopies terrain?

Somewhere on here or definitely on Apolyton.com's civ III addon site.

Did I understand you correctly that these only work with vin CivIII?

These have only been tested in civ 3 vanilla, since i'm on a mac. I can't imagine why they wouldn't work for any given expansion, and in fact, i'd like to hear from someone who uses them in conquests or whatever.

Thanks again!

The screenshot looks pretty good.

What version are you using, exactly?

JJansen: A screenshot showing off a few cities close together is probably the best way to showcase borders. Often, I've seen a potentially good looking border, but upon trying it out in a save, I end up feeling sick :)

Looks good. My most recent attempt I fixed the corners...but I can't get the mountains right. :(

Those are the borders!

Corn, your original ones (or rather, the lack thereof) did inspire me to get off my butt and make these. I'm sure everyone who's gotten mine will appreciate what you've done for them, through me. For all of us, thank you.

Don't worry about the mountains - I'm thinking that no one can get solid borders to look right without altering the mountain and hill graphics by hand as well, not even me. The only ones that can look good, i think, are the ones made of signposts or flags. I shudder to imagine how a chain-link fence would look without mangling it on purpose.

Your new ones look good, and do largely address the acute angles.

Tell me, what do you think of mine? Any suggestions or wants?

Sorry I have to bump this because:

A.) Barely anyone knows about this and I think everyone should
B.) Is there gonna be any more updates for this
C.) this is a great change

I bumped this....so what....it was a good bump :goodjob:

Wow, has it really been a year since I did these?

DBM, I must say, your taste is impeccable, as is your logic.

As to point B.), I must say that while I don't have anything new to add to it (unless you haven't clicked on the links in my sig, in which case they'll be new to you), I would like to issue a new thread containing all 4 of my borders, each one slightly improved (there's a defect in the original set that only I can see without the aid of photoshop, and all three other borders were based on the flawed one).

I guess it'd be a Special Edition Anniversary Set. ;)

Anyway, thanks for your support. Aside from a poll asking "which border set do you like the best?" (I REFUSE TO MAKE ONE!), I don't know how else to spread the gospel of the Improved Borders.
