I've recently bought Civ2 from Sold Out (through Ebay) and can't get it to install (WinXP Home). Has anyone else bought from them & had problems installing or am I doing something wrong>
Cheers

Right click the installation file and select Properties. Go to "Compatibility" and select "Win 98" (or Win 95). That should work.

Sold Out games come with their own installer which is basically a menu that includes an install button. Whenever I first put the disc into the CD Drive the PC freezes for about 4 minutes then comes up with the error:
NT On-Access Scanner service. has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. (I think this is to do with McFee Security)
I then click the install button but the installer will not load. Yesterday I tried installing on a friend's PC and had no problems (also on XP Home). The PC didn't freeze on insertion of the disc either.
Heeelp

I've just tried it, the PC now sees the disc straight away (instead of taking 4 minutes) but it still won't install.
Today I bought a 2nd hand Original Civ 2 which won't have the Sold Out installer on it so hopefully I'll be playing it soon.

OK, I've right-clicked & found Civ on the disc but don't know how to install it (please bare with me, I'm new to this). I've tried going to run & browsing to the setup.now file but it just loads the installer again. The read me file says to change the Appearance to small fonts if the installer fails to work but the only options I have are normal, large or extra large fonts.

The install files name ought to be "SETUP.EXE" that is the filetype shoukd be *EXE* and not *NOW*

Alternatively you could try this:
1. go into the directory named "..\Civ2" and run the file "INSTALLE.EXE"
2. after install go into directory "..\WING" and run the file "WINGSET.EXE"

This should help.

Please note that the directorys "Civ2" and "Wing" should be inside the same directory or in the root. I dont know how the directory layout is on a CD such as your SoldOut CD, I have original editon CD:s

Also you might consider throwing out your antivirus software.
I dont use any, and havent suffered anything in the 10 years I have had a PC.

Have tried this (thanks for feedback) but to no avail. I've tried to run SETUP.EXE and INSTALLE.EXE but nothing happens (i'm viewing the task manager as I'm doing it).
Running setup.now.exe will bring up the first intro page of the installer (as if inserting the disc) but the installer fails. If the task manager is open it displays 'not responding' when running setup.now.exe.
Thanks for all the help but it's time to give up. I've tried ringing Sold Out's tech support line over 4 days last week (probably about 20 attempts) but always received a recorded message. I have been in touch with them by email but it has been of no help. I emailed early this morning (about 12 hours ago) but received no reply so I'm just putting this one down to experience.
BTW, I have tried everything suggested here and do appreciate the help. I have also tried everything in the read me file on the disc. I have disabled all background programs as well as security measures, still no luck. Yet when I tried the disc on a friends PC it worked fine, so I can't really blame the software.

Was your friend's OS WinXP only, or SP1 (service pack 1), and yours SP2?
I have installed SP2 and have now some security problems (attachments to e-mails not going through mainly).

I have the same problem and have been thwarted in all attempts to solve it.

JJOJN, since you successfully installed it on another PC, apart from being a problem with your config., it may also come from your CD drive. Some are more sensitive than others, and may think the file is corrupted or unreadable.
Did you try to copy all the CD contents on your hard drive and install from there?
