This thread will be for reporting my attempts at the various Realms Beyond Civilization epics.

We are Professor RBCiv-48 of the Hittites.

This is a Monarch-level game with some variants sponsored by Sirian. For more details, see the Realms Beyond Civilization website.

(In advance, I apologize for the format of this report: I haven't quite figured out the most efficient way to convey the progress of the game.)

After moving scout to hill and worker to the west, I decide that right here and right now is a good time and place to start to unlock the mysteries of nature. First up, The Wheel.

Scouts run around and find many rivers: there will be much money available for future proposal cycles!

GH in 3350BC pops a settler... but very far from home: it will take him 11 turns to reach the silks nearby Hattusas.

Other than that, random GH bring in 25g, Warrior Code.

French are discovered in 3050BC (or, rather they discover us in the IBT). One turn later, Joanie offers BW for the Wheel (which I *just* finished). I accept the deal, although it isn't ideal.... Hey, science is supposed to be collaborative. Joanie had just better make sure to reference me every time she uses the horse resource!

Masonry and *another* Settler come from GHs in 2800BC; but the Settler again is very far from home and will also take 11 turns to reach lands north of Hattusas to found Ugarit. I *build* my first settler two turns later in 2710BC.

GHs bring me Mysticism and two warriors. The warriors cause me to recall that this was supposed to be raging barbs, but I haven't seen a single one yet! And I've already sent two settlers on long unescorted treks across the wilderness  Not that I'm complaining: more time alone in my lab, that means!

The Spanish and my first barb are spotted one turn later

GHs bring another warrior and maps

Learn Philosophy in 1790BC; lacking CoL, take MapMaking as free tech 'cos it's most expensive one I can get.

Here are my lands as of 1750BC:

The French come knocking in 1650BC, offering me Math for Writing and 10g, which I accept.
Isabella pays her first visit, too, offering Iron Working for Masonry and 60g, which I decline (although in retrospect I think I should have taken it; I refused b/c 60g was most of my cash and I was already researching IW and it was due in only three more turns)

Get more maps, and lose two scouts to barbs in 1575BC.

Have some bad luck with the barbs over the next few hundred years.

I figure Aleppo looks good for FP when I get to 10 cities...

I send a galley across the ocean and onto sea onthe other side; completely forgetting that it has a chance to sink (which I don't realize until I try to come back many years later). Fortunately, it doesn't, and the other continent is soon known... I establish embassies with tribes as I find them (and have the cash available)

Meet Caesar, Shaka, Hiawatha. The latter offers me Republic for Liturature and 90g of my 104g. I'm not quite ready for Republic yet (cities recovering from settler production) so I refuse. Next turn, Shaka offers Polytheism for Literature, straight up, which I accept, becoming Midieval in 190BC.

The Middle Ages were rather uneventful....

In 130BC, the founding of a new city delays production of FP in Aleppo due to increased corruption; and a sword discovers a horde of 20-some barb horses. A few turns later, they are triggered by a landing French Settler/spear pair, and I lose 65 gold a sword and a spear to the barbs.

Decide to build embassies in France and Spain in 380AD to reduce risk of them making threats and/or war against me..... on the IBT Spain demands Monotheism  Yeah, that plan worked  My army consists of: 2 warriors, 9 archers, 6 swords and 2 catapults, so I cave.

Two turns later, the French demand Republic  Those embassies were really worth the money I spent! I again cave.

I turn down several offers from the farther continent of Monarchy for Theology, thinking I will never need to be a Monarchy, since everybody seems to be polite to me when they stop by my office, and I am a peaceful scientist....

AI's begin SIstine several turns after I discover Theology, so I start thinking about wonders. Cop's and Smith's will bring me a GA, so lets try for that (and the research bonus would be nice, too!)

However, I fatally stall for 6 turns after discovering Astronomy before I begin Cops in Hattusas (I had to wait for the University to finish). Actually, I think the fatal flaw was leaving Hattusas underdeveloped. It was well-developed as a size-6 town, but not as a size-10+ production machine, that took several turns of worker effort which I did not commence until around this time... Ultimately, the Iroquois cascade to Cop's when the French complete Leo's in 880AD, when I had 4 turns remaining on the build. I lose 336 shields in Hattusas as I begin building a bank from scratch.

Meanwhile, a few turns before I learn Gunpowder, the first AI begin to build Leo's. Also, a scare when a small stack of Spanish troops walks up to Ankuwa (my town holding all the gems), and a pop-up window announces a declaration of war  ... by the Iroquois against the Babylonians! :o

The Spanish demand (and receive) gems.

Several "western hemisphere" tribes offer their WM for my WM+Chemistry. This struck me as absurd at the time; but my WM would have been worth quite a lot (as would theirs), and perhaps if I had accepted any one of these, better offers may have come my way later...

The Spanish scare me, so most of the muskets I build are sent west to protect those border towns; only a few go east.

(Sorry, no pix: I blew through the middle ages pretty quickly since not much was happening, and didn't think of it...)

I enter the Industrial Age in 1030AD  And a survey of the world map shows that I am the first (but I haven't seen a single Scientific leade)

Then the bad news begins to accumulate:

In 1130, I learn Steam Power, but have no coal  The nearest is in Besancon, first French city over the border.
In 1220, SPain declares war on France! I, although surprised, breathe a sigh of relief as their troops finally leave my lands. The French blitz through three or four Spanish towns in a few turns.

In 1250,
Kul_rbc48_gibbon.JPG

...despite that I am *still* the *only* Industrial nation

About this time, French troops from their northern hinterlands begin to trek southward for the SPanish war.
In 1280, French complete Shake's AND Smith's :wow:
In 1290, French and Spanish halt hostilities... and all of the French troops fortify in my lands (This has me a little worried)

The only good news in this stretch is that I complete Newton's unchallenged in 1260.

In 1320, a French cavalry bursts out of the fog to attack Emar (borders with Besancon). The musket there holds flawlessly, but French troops already here capture a few workers.

Next turn, Hattusha, defended by only an archer  falls

Kick off GA killing a redlined cav with a 3MC in 1340

WW kicks up after only a couple of turns b/c there are LOTS of French cav and musketeers in my land, and I can manage only barely better than tit-for-tat victories.

My pitiful army in 1350: 4 archers, 2 swords, 2 LB, 15 muskets, 5 MidInf, 1 Cat, 1 cannon

Karhuyk (with my horses) falls in 1355
Emar falls in 1365

I go full steam research for Replacable Parts, thinking that I can stem the tide with Infantry. If I can survive that long! In the meantime, Emar falls.

I discover Replacable Parts in 1380.... but I have no rubber! :aargh: Well, there is this thing called a guerilla that I've never used before (I'm a bit late to the party: I first bought Vanilla Civ3 about six months after Play the World came out, and have only now upgraded to Conquests to play this epic). Perhaps the guerilla will help me hold off the French...

Of course, the nearest rubber is in Besancon :shakehead: This will be tough....

French offer peace for Steam Power and 2 workers in 1385. I refuse, thinking I have begun to turn the tide with the advent of guerillas

By 1400, France is fascist
Lots of embargos and alliances are signed against me. They were all with western nations, so all that amounted to was occasional bombardment by frigates.

I discover that *everything* upgrades to guerilla (well, that'll help a little), so I use all available cash each turn to upgrade what I can.

In 1420, my army is 17 muskets, 8 artillery, 15 guerilla... Better, but it ain't exactly anything to write home about.

1425: Spanish offer MT for Medicine, which I refuse (maybe if I had horses, I'd take it)

Take Hattusha back in 1445, but lose it and the artillery used to help take it in the IBT.

In 1450, Babs catch me with my pants down and land a party outside ALeppo about which I can do nothing.

Babs take Aleppo in 1455

I re-take Hattusha again in 1460; SPanish sign alliance with Babs against me (now I believe the situation is hopeless): they alreday have troops in my land, since they were at war with Zulu, who have one or two cities on this continent.

1465: I re-take Aleppo in, but of course, there no longer is a FP there!
French frigate bombardment before cav attack lands Huttusha back n the hands of the French
Spanish raze Kadesh and take Adana

1470: TEN French cav suddenly appear outside Ugarit to deliver the coup de grace

1475: French take Ugarit; SPanish take Alaca Huyuk
1480: I retake Adana; French take Ivriz and Alalah; Spanish raze undefended Tyrana

1485: French take Kummanni, raze Tarsus
1500: babs offer peace for Corporation. Refuse 'cos it doesn't matter anymore

1505: French take Aleppo
1510: French raze Harran; Spanish take Karatepe
1515: MGL with 1/5 guer defending
French capture Ankuwa (and gems), and kill my MGL
1525: French take Adana; SPanish take Hubishna; I am now 2CC

1535: French take Emar... and this won't last another turn:

1540: It takes ten cav to do it, but the French capture Hattusas:

Well, thank goodness for that!

Sure, we'll get right on that!

Post-mortem:

Clearly the lack of emphasis on military did me in. I thought that with France as a neighbor, I'd be OK. Is Joan more agressive in C3C?

Being unable to switch immediately to military build when sneak-attacked (and having a joke of a military) also was painful: another reason to have afforded at least a little more attention to my homeland security...

I didn't realize just how far ahead in tech I had gotten. During the last few turns I was alive, other nations were just beginning to build Universal Suffrage! I had been Industrial for nearly 400 years (40 turns) by then! That probably painted a large bullseye on my back.

It really hurt not having coal, but I thought that western jungle or the eastern mountains would do it for me...

I don't think I did a good job of keeping up a decent labor force.... I'm not even certain my high-water mark for workers was as high as 20.

I intentionally planned my expansion phase to end with 20 cities (OCN with FP, I believe) to keep corruption down. Having read Kylearan's game, I now believe that might not have been such a good idea (he said he had 46 cities in 1315!). I suppose those extra "throwaway" cities could have been useful for troop support.... and for hemming in the French and Spanish.
