September 30th?

Yes, if they want to squeeze out the last few bucks from an existing product. But for a NEW product it's a completely different story. The timing is crucial. Release too late and you'll miss the peak season. Release too early and you won't get the same sales momentum.

I agree with this.

It doesn't take much advertising for a game of this caliber. The previews in every major magazine and on every major site are advertisement enough.
Indeed, they know we (the hardcore!) will all buy the game straight away anyways! And good reviews will get newer fans.

This comment shows a lack of understanding of how the software industry works. Everyone needs marketing no matter who you are or how popular your product is. Even MS needs to advertise its Office suite
Releasing screenshots and doing interviews with magazines is marketing!

If they're going to release it September 30th they should *consider* stepping up the advertisement for Civ4.

I believe it was Jeff (whatever his last name) from Atari who said TV advertising doesn't work for Computer games as well as it does console games (or maybe it was someone else, the only thing I remember for sure is it was someone who was connected with the computer game industry).

Most of us hardcore PC gamers don't watch that much TV i guess. ;)

I think one of the main things they are trying to do is get new people to play the game. So I think they will need to advertise.

Maybe you can pre-order it in September, but it won't be shipped until November. Who knows, maybe there will be some special edition or bonus (poster, production documentary, extra scenarios, etc) for people who fork over the money early. I just bought Civ III a couple of years ago (for Mac), so I have no idea if there is any precident for this, but it seems like they do it often for other games and movie DVD's, etc.

What is better advertisment than a 9/10 out of 10 rating in a PC games magazine? :D

Civ ain't the type of game kids look at and go 'ooooo wow', it's the type of game that people will read reviews of and be attracted to it by reputation, rather than flashy TV adverts.

Or the type of game poeple start talking about and show their friends. Half of history classes i tell my friends about the civ game. I think about 5 of them are deciding to buy the game along side me to start some online magic. :)

TV-advertising, where did I mention TV-advertising? I just meant advertising in game magazines (other than posting reviews), opening a preliminary webpage and the like.

Firaxis and Take2 both said quarter 4 of 2005. Quarter 4 starts on October 1st to December 31st. An accurate date is November 15 which is in the middle of that quarter. Some online retail put September 30, 2005 as the date of release since that the day before quarter 4.

So basically, the release will be Jan 1, 2006, the latest possible without breaking their promise.

They would prefere november than september, because of the christmas sales will peak with the game's interest, so its not surprising, if a little disapointing.

The Warmonger states the release date has been moved forward from the winter, suggesting its updated info. However, it also states thats 2K annonuced this in which case they must have forgotten to update their Civ4 page. Only time will tell.

Why do people continue beleiving this crap. 2K has not announced anything and they haven't "forgotten" to update their website because there is nothing to update. The official date is still November, whatever anyone else says.
