I've patched up to 1.09 and loaded my current game ok, but when I build a wonder the movie gives me a CTD. Can these movies be disabled? I haven't found that option anywhere. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

you can turn off the wonder movies by going into your CivilizationIV.ini file and changing this option

; Set to 1 for no in-game movies
NoMovies = 0

there is a shortcut in the install directory for CIV4.

Just a heads up, doing this may also remove the tech discovery pop ups. It did for me anyway, see if it does for you..

Were you building the Oracle? That's seems to be the only wonder that crashes on my comp. The other movies play choppy, but without crashes.

Sorry for the late reply, Civivist, I've been without internet for a couple weeks. If you're still interested...I had the problem with a few movies, including Oracle, the worst one being the Three Gorges Dam. Usually I would save just before the movie played and after 3 to 6 reloads I would finally get to the "ok" button and hit that asap to continue with the game. Now I've moved up a level and build fewer wonders. I haven't tried to edit the ini file yet. Thanks for the help Moepheus.

I found this in this or apolyton forums, but can't find the post now...so kudos goes the person who figured this out, not me...

The choppy movie is caused by Anti-Aliasing being turned on in game. It is because the wonder's movies use Blink (a 3rd party movie player). When you use Anti-Aliasing in game, it tries to AA the blink movies also...hence creating the choppiness.

To fix it do the following:
1. Turn off AA under the graphics options inside of civ4 (i.e. set it to 0)
2. Exit Civ4
3. If you want to use AA, use it from your graphics card. IF your card is capable of doing this (most modern ones are), then goto: windows control panel > display > settings > advanced > [your video card manufacturer name] tab at top. Look around, if you have it, this is the most likely place to find it.
4. Hold down the shift key (keep it down) and restart civ (e.g. hold shift, double click civ4 icon on desktop) ...keep holding the shift key

During the load sequence, one of the things says "XML (uncached)" once you see that, your movies should be better. if it says "XML (cached)" you didn't hold the shift key soon enough, or long enough. (Holding the shift key while starting civ4 clears the cache...you need to clear the cache after making the changes)

Oh! So that's how you clear the cache. I've been holding the shift key only after I double click the Civ IV icon then I release it after. :wallbash:

Can't wait to get back home to try this one.

By the way, sorry for sounding such a newb here, but what does anti-aliasing do anyway?

Google is your friend. ;)

In the case of the game, we're talking about anti-aliasing in a 3D environment. Any time a 3D object overlaps something else and both the object and whatever is behind it are different colors, you will see the same jagged edges discussed in the above-linked article. Modern 3D cards can smooth these edges out, although there are performance costs associated with this.

Holy crap, this worked! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I miss having anti-aliasing, but I'm not about to enable it through the video card's control panel. I'm entirely too lazy to change profiles every time I switch games.

Thanks Underseer. I actually tried reading about AA before but I couldn't comprehend the technical jargon. Your explanation makes it sound so simple. :goodjob:

Nemo,

Thanks for the info. I hate to sound computer illiterate, but I assume you mean to go into the ini file and edit AA = 0, or is this done in the preferences (I'm not at home so can't look inside CIV 4).

Also, you talk about running AA from your video card. I assume (again) that this can be done and still not have the movie problems associated with Blink.

You should be able to just edit the config file, yes, but I wouldn't, just in case. I beleive that is all the game option change does, anyway. The only thing is, that sometimes (i.e. in other games/programs) doing it in game may also make other changes. I don't know if civ4 does anything else if you make the change in game or not (i.e. it would be nice if changing it in game would clear the cache automatically, heh. I saw somewhere that it was actually *supposed* to clear it for you, but it's broken...reportedly). So, just to be safe, I'd do it in game.

Yes, if you turn AA on on your video card, you still get AA applied in game (so the game would look the same as if it were turned on in game), and no blink/movie problems. (Essentially, you are just changing the controller that applies AA from Software, civ4, to Hardware, your video card).

Pachu: AA essentially just smoothes the edges of all the images. So, instead of looking like a lego block stair case around every image, it looks smoother, and a bit blurred.

omg! This did wonders for me too! Now my Civ IV runs faster. No more grahpical glitches and hard reboots when a wonder movie comes up or when the diplomacy screen pops up! Thank man!

One thing I'm wondering about is why Firaxis doesn't just set Civ IV to automatically clear the cache when it runs? It obviously speeds up performance.

Cheers all. Gotta get back to playing. Gonna try standard map again. :)

My AA is already set on 0 inside the game, and I can't change it even if I wanted to cuz there is no other option. Also, in the config file, I don't see anything related to the AA setting. I still get the choppy movies. Why is that?

Anti-aliasing should not affect movie performance. I hope Firaxis fixes whatever the [bad word] is wrong by the next patch. :p
