ENES: World of Magic II

@Erik: Did you dislike my project, then? 'Cos you didn't put that point into it last turn.. ;)

The black flames flickered in Erathal's eyes as the spell net crackled into life. With a sharp hiss the flames withdrew, died, only to be reborn ever-stronger in seconds. The crimson-coloured runes drawn on the floor glowed faintly in the room, darkened by the 'shine' of the Eternal's conjured flames. Thin, spidery lines formed between the ancient markings as an even darker gloom formed between them, calling, calling Erathal to join them.. And then the feeling was gone, as the gloom evaporated, concentrated, thickened into the shape of a human skull. The crimson light flowed into it, igniting within the eyes a ferocious glow of malevolence. The levitating skull shuddered, as if a human in cold, as the black flames stretched towards the roof, producing a loud hum as they licked the bare stone. Erathal fixed his glance upon the skull, his thoughts wholly concentrated on the presence he felt within it.
'Never shall I serve you, mortal one!', the skull shrieked, Erathal's second, newly begun spell eroding it's undead essence. 'I am forever my own! Areayron! Horror of the North! Never shall I be defeated..' It's voice dwindled into a wordless, painful whispering as it's evil intentions, it's carefully devised magical protections, it's very essence, all was absorbed by the power of the creation of the mythal. As it's final curses, it's defenses and shields, joined the coursing web of magic soon to cover all Duskmist, the Pale Masters housed in the Guild began their silent incantating hymn to stabilize the chaotic web of energies.
His eyes filling with the black fire, his mind exploring the vast consciousness that had been Areayron, Erathal simply smiled.. And joined in the chanting. One step closer.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Vladimir Guval has traveled the world. Every nation he visited in his trading travels was different. Every nation had its own unique spirit, and its own unique magic. This was his first visit to the nation of Roddyna and he was very curiuos to learn about it. The first thing he noticed was that the docks in New Moscow were not worked by large throngs of underworked and underpaid strongmen. When his ship came to a stop, 5 people on the dock caught the ropes thrown by Vladimir's sailors, tied the ship down to the dock and left. Once the plank was down, a very buerocratic looking gentleman walked up to the ship.
"Can I speak to the Captain or owner of this vessel?" he asked the first sailor he saw.
"I am both captain and owner. Vladimir Guval at your service. World traveler and trader of the most exotic items of the world."
"Dockmaster Gregory. Can I ask how long you plan to stay in New Moscow, how much cargo you need to unload, and wheather you will require help to unload and or store it?"
"Right to business, eh? How long we stay depends on the hospitality of New Moscow, for now lets say a month, though that is likely to change. For cargo, yes, I need to hire some locals to take it off the ship and deliver it to a wearhouse, which I need to find and rent first. Also, could you point me to the closest trade post, I need to get some local currency to pay my sailors." Vladimir always asked the first person he met in a new place to point him to the local currency exchange, one of his first measures of a nation was wheather or not he would get ripped off for his first purchase of local currency. He paid his men well, they never had money problems while on shore leave, but he did pay them in local currency, because he did not want THEM ripped off by the locals. This dockmaster's face didnt light up with greed when the need of a money trader was mentioned, so Vlaidimir felt prety good about him so far.
The dockmaster pulled out a parchment roll and scribled down something from Vladimir's response while muttering "undecided..... trader". Once he was done writing he looked up at Vladimir,
"The closest money trader is "Ivan's", one block to the right at the end of the dock. Ivan can also point to the wearhouse district. Once you have a place to take your cargo, stop by my office at the end of the dock and i'll get you the help you need with moving your cargo. Good day till then." And he walked off the ship.
Vladimir turned to his first mate, who had been listening to most of the conversation,
"I'll go down to this Ivan's place, and you and the boys secure the ship and get the cargo ready for moving."
"Ay Captian, as always cant wait for you to get back with OUR money." Laughing at the never ending joke she turned and started yelling at the sailors to get the ship rigged up for its long stay in port.

Vladimir took the small chest of gold and jewels he used to get local currency, and walked of to the currency trader. When he walked up to the door of "Ivan's" he got a strange sinking feeling, and the door opened in front of him by itself.
"Nice isnt it?" said a voice from inside, "Your own weight pushes down on the floor infront of the door which makes the door open. I Love having a Techmagi son!"
"Techmagi?" the surprise of a live door and the voice's amusement at it took Vladimir off guard.
"Your first time to Roddyna I see. Techmagi are our magicians. They have a way with machines of all sorts, great inventors. My son just recently officialy became a Techmagi, that door he made for me when he was only 8 years old. Still surprises most visitors."
Vladimir wasnt sure if making his first trade with the father of a local magician was a good thing or not. On the one hand, the man was unlikely to want to tarnish his sons reputation by cheating unsuspecting travelers. But on the other, he could probably get away with much more cheating then any other merchant, on account of his son's high status. About all Vladimir knew about Roddyna was that Magicians were the ruling class, but even that fact he'd have to doublecheck on his own.
"What can I do for you?" asked Ivan when Vladimir hadnt said anything.
"What's your local currency, and how much of it would my sailors need to live comfortably for about a month?"
"Gold, Silver, and Bronze coins that we call Rubles, and how much depends on how many sailors you have, and what you mean by "live comfortably."
"47 sailors and by comfortably, I mean rich enough to enjoy the sights and entertainment of the city, but not rich enough to throw money away. Lets say something between, how you and that Dockmaster chap I met live."
"Well, will they need to pay for rooms at an inn? or are they staying on the ship. If they dont need to get rooms, then i'd say 10 to 15 silver Rubles a day, makes 300 to 450 silver rubles for the month, which comes out to....15 to 20 thousand silver Rubles total. So two thousand gold Rubles should be just about right for you. That's quite a load to carry though."
"Alright then, now lets decide how much out of this chest here you want for five hundred of your Gold Rubles. I'll come back next week if in the course of this week i find your calculations and price to be fair."
After a big of haggling and a quick story about how Vladimir came into possesion of some of his larger precious stones, Ivan kept a large Ruby and a few Diamonds, and gave Vladimir a bag of Gold Coins.
As he was leaving, he noticed that the "live" door, didnt work quite as magicaly when approached from inside the store. I didnt open on its own "it would just hit people in the face if it did" explained Ivan, and in mid closing swing after Vladimir passed it, it swung back open.
"It thinks i'm comming in, when i'm going out. Not that smart, is it?" thought Vladimir with a grin, and headed back to his ship. Half way back to the ship he realized that he'd forgoten to find a wearhouse.

I demand the story bonuses for last update! :p

EDIT: Orders, they be sent.

EDIT2: Could you add the fourth update map to the front page? Thanks :)

EDIT3: Btw, I've started to edit posts instead of W-posting. I'm beginning to like this! :D

Roddyna

"It has been a week since I've arrived here and I am still to meet a single one of these Techmagi I hear so much about. I am starting to think that they dont mingle with the common folk as much as I was lead to believe when I arrived."
"Its not like they're hiding. They just like being holed up in their workshops playing with their inventions more then dealing with people. You have to seek them out. Have you tried just going to a Techmagi Workshop?"
"Yes. They said he was out. Twice. I dont think he wants to talk to me."
"Which one did you try seeing?"
"Um... Athony...no....Anthony, ye, that's it Anthony."
"HA! no wonder. You were more likely to catch him in the kings palace workshop then in his own workshop, and that's if they didnt mean out of town. He's the governor of Korinov. I'd suggest starting with a different one. I think Ivan likes talking to travelers, you may want to try him. He's a funny one, too. I heard he made a door for his father's shop that would hit people in the head when they were leaving. I dont know where his workshop is though, you'll have to ask around."
"I think i may know who to ask. I may have met his father and that door my first day here."

Boris gave Vladimir a curious look as if he wanted to ask if the door realy hit him on the head. Vladimir decided not to ruin the old man's anecdote about the Techmagi Ivan by telling him how practical the door actualy was. Vladimir had found out much about Roddyna and New Moscow from Boris. Boris owned the wearhouse that Vladimir had converted into a sort of temporary private shop to make it easier to show his everchanging cargo to those interested in buying or trading for some of it.
"I'll see you later, thanks for the advice." Said Vladimir Guval as he got up to leave.

When Vladimir walked into Ivan's shop he yet again stoped himself just short of thanking the door for opening for him.
"Back again? I didnt think I'd see you again for a week. You didnt get robbed did you?" Though they'd only talked twice, Vladimir had grown to like the happy money trader.
"No, no. I'm actualy here for something besides money this time."
"Oh?"
Vladimir could see the curiosity shining through on the man's face.
"The first time i was here you mentioned that your son was a Techmagi. I was wondering if you could help me meet him? I've been here a week, have tried twice to talk to a Techmagi, but both times was told that he's away. And my visit to a nation has never gone so long without atleast seeing the local magicians."
"I'm surprised you had such bad luck getting to talk to one. Most people around here have started avoiding some of the Techmagi because they tend to go on endlessly about their newest inventions. Why dont you come by for dinner tonight. You can meet my son Ivan and there wont be any of the interuptions you'd get if you went to his never sleeping workshop. Dont tell him I said so, but his workshop is a madhouse."

Great story, Roddy! Ach, I must write myself. Oh btw, this is a quote I found in this thread. :mischief:

Erik Mesoy said:
Any magic type goes. Human minds shape the planet's energy, so if you can think of it, and concentrate, it works. (Exception: Technomancy. I will SO slap down any munchkin who tries that.)

Sorry Eric but i just got back today and if you need orders by tommorrow I won't be able to get them in as i now need to get packing to leave for uni :p.

Your just as well delivering some deadly blows I abhor an NPC not walking over another country. (look at army ratios) its always more fun to make a glorious pull back :)

Is the update coming soon? And where are the story bonuses? Bah, I'll check again later.

EDIT: Ok, back after three hours. Nothing yet. Is the update coming today or not? I guess not.

Blame TGIL for the late update. :p

Update 5 - 166 AR

WAR! The people who were once colonists have now become empire-builders and warmongers for the most part.

The plague spreading in southern Duskmist is revealed to be the work of intelligent, undead hordes, who have been systematically flinging themselves into water supplies. The Mythal of Duskmist has now begun to hinder them, but it cannot prevent plague from spreading once it is past the shield.

The rebels of western Bersia proclaim their independence rather loudly. With the high command incapacitated, the military is unable to hinder the rebels sufficiently.

House Leonhard invades the Cammane City-States. Sudden spikes of patrotism cool down the northern rebels as a militia spontaneously forms to stop the invaders, but the tactics of the Leonhardic troops still demolish the unprepared CCS defenders.
(+1000 CCS militia, -200 Leonhard infantry, -12 Wurm Riders, -450 CCS infantry, -300 CCS militia)

While the army is away, the rebels will play. Dissatisfaction, first with national evil, then with the atrocities committed during the invasion, causes the rebellions in eastern Leonhardia (okay, I need a better adjective) to flare up again.

Akratia and Dangal are forced to peace as a bipartisan group of mages tears a barren wasteland between the two nations. As neither of them were very enthusiastic about the war to begin with, the losses are minimal.
(-2000 population, -100 infantry to each)

The war of attrition between Olympus and the Fae continues. While the Titans march forward, crushing their enemies and throwing lightning, the Chanters drain morale and spread terror. Casualties are heavy and both sides appear to have bogged down. But in the middle, right where the battle is heaviest, Mars, God of War is seen, exhorting the army onwards.
(-500 infantry each side, -3 Titans, -8 Chanters)

The Briglandian military, having grown increasingly dissatisfied with the pampered oligarchy, finds a buried treasure which the oligarchy then proceeds to misapportion. This is the final straw, and so with some (im)moral support from Arkenaar, they stage a revolt.
Meanwhile, the mages of Samarra are diverted to some event allegedly involving an artifact of the ancestors. For some reason, the entire continent becomes cut off from the outside world for a few months. Upon their emergence from isolation, Brigland is almost destroyed, Arkenaar has invaded it, and Samarra has become a magocracy paying tribute to Arkenaar.
(-unknown, unknown)

New Rome continues their invasion of House Telvanni, their concern being primarily to avoid casualties. Their use of Praetors to shield their troops while constructing fortresses every few miles helps a great deal with this, while at the same time ensuring that it will be almost impossible to make them retreat.
(-1 Praetor, -50 Newroman infantry, -100 Telvannic infantry)

Story bonuses: RoddyVR +10 Techmagi and +1 culture, Silver Steak +1 culture and +1 Cunning Plans of Doom, Azash +1 point to the Mythal, House Leonhard +1 armal training.

The southern regions of the Techno Union declare themselves independent, as they feel that the capital is a thousand miles away (which is true) and that the nation's administration does not care for them (which may or may not be true).
(-30 000 Techno Union population)

Update text is lost. I managed to reconstruct the map.
