I need to get this out of my system...

Ok, enough is enough. I'm sick and tired of Cyrus ruining the fun of every game I play. In order to understand Cyrus, I need to *become* Cyrus.

So...here's my next scenario.

Quick Monarch game as Persia, keep restarting until it's clear we are 100% isolated. Expand to fill the island, then explore NO further. Guard each town with 1 archer & 1 axeman, and never upgrade them (well, maybe longbows) -- build no other military at all, except as necessary to fend off barbs. Try to build some Wonders & found at least one or two religions.

Focus on Commerce, Science & Religious techs; avoid all military techs except when necessary to proceed. When I meet other civs, be polite but refuse all trade requests & keep borders closed. Refuse all demands for tribute, but gladly offer help when asked (if anyone's relations get up to Pleased, that is.)

The goal, as it were, is to see how long it takes until another civilization invades and crushes my idyllic, utopian society.

Anyone have suggestions? And anyone wanna take bets on how long I last?

The answer depends on how close Alex or Monty or Napoleon or Genghis or Isabella will be to your continent (btw, I have won games in emperor playing almost this way - the only "small" difference was that I avoided religious techs and instead researched military ones - but didn't upgrade the units until the last moment).

Ok, game is started, I'm gonna write up a report in Stories & Tales, but first...I need help. I have no idea how to fill out this map:

Green Dot is where my settler is, where I planned to build to grab the fish & horses and pop the warrior hut for free. However, the game is recommending I build on Blue Dot, presumably to grab the silk & oasis. However #2, that would conflict with RED dot, the only place on the island which will grab all four silks! (Note: there are no significant resources to the north.)

I'm also not sure about the pigs & ivory. How should I map this out?

I did something similar as Izzy. As soon as Monty had Galleons he came hell bent. I was able to hold him off only because he chose a horrible place to land and I could bang out a bunch of Conquistadors. He went back to reload and then landed in the exact same place. He must of had War Weary probs as he wanted a truce about 20 or so turns later. I haven't yet finished this game so I can't give you any outcome.

I say settle on the green. With four hills and horses it'll make decent production and there is more than enough food to feed the miners.

Why don't you move the red dot to the left 1 space, and the green dot up 2 spaces, right one space. This allows access to nearly every resource on the island within 2 cities. and maybe a third commerce city by the Ivory?

Cities I'd place:
1) NW of pigs
2) Green dot (S of horses)
3) On farthest south silk (to get fish)
4) E of northern silk (2N, 1E of oasis)
5) Desert between elephants and silk (2E, 1S of oasis)

Just my two cents. Good luck. Curious to see how it comes out.

If you didn't notice, that's a resource base, not a population one. his motherland is to the north (arabela is the third persian city)

AC is correct, this is a new island, homeland is on island far to the NW.

Ok, we have 1 vote for Green Dot, 1 vote for NW of Green Dot, 1 vote for north of NW suggestion, and one vote to give up and start over. Nice consensus, guys! In any case, I'm still working on that Stories thread, so keep the recommendations coming...

I forgot to tell you: after you finish this, in your next game take the Greeks and pray that Cyrus is next to you. It will be the perfect revenge for all your previous sufferings - he will build immortals, you will build plalanxes, and at the end there will be phalanxes and no immortals at all.

You realize of course, that's kinda like saying I should play the Orkin Man, and pray for termites? :groucho:

I'll keep it in mind, though. Meanwhile, Report #2 has been posted in the Stories thread.

There are many kinds of termites with horses in civ: Egyptian ones, Mongolian ones, Persian ones .

Here's how i would place the cities. It uses the maximum amount of water tiles and you don't have any crappy city.

Zombie, that's brilliant. I should practice more island filling. Looking back at what I suggested, I think your layout is far superior.
