Hi!

Here is a new Civilization: the Afrikaaners (also known as Boers)

Leaders:

-Paul "Oom" Kruger
Krueger.JPG

aggressive (he wasn't a war monger, but he had to proof his abilities in times of war)
financial (he was great at negiotiations)

-Jan Smuts

industrious and organized (he lead South Africa durring it's Industrialization)

both leaders favor "Nationhood" cause they bring their people together and led them through war times.

Unique Unit: Kommando Ruiter (replaces cavalry)

Thats a shame, i was looking forward to giving it a go. However, it looks quite nicely done.

This Civ is long over due!

I give the honor to Chamaedrys and White Rabbit showing great ingenuity.

Well done guys! And thank you.

I particularly enjoy the reference of 'Afrikaans' to the occupied area. Very nice. 100% Afrikaans. I like that.

how do i download it? i click on download and a new window opens then the file download window appears i click open and it just opens the afrikaanermod[1] compressed folder... where do i go from there? i tried clicking save and saved it into the mods folder but it doesnt appear in the game... im computer illiterate by the way...

Yes, You must save it and unzipp it in the mod folder. Keep an eye on the folder structure, it has to be mods\afrikaanermod\assets, sometimes an other is put around the original file, than its look like this: mod\afrikaanermod\afrikaanermod\assets and has to be corrected.
When it is unziped and the folder structure is correct you have two ways to load the mod:
-Change the Civilization4.ini file. The file is in My Games\SidmeiersCiv... folder. Open the file and Scroll down till "Specify a mod Folder" replace the "0" with mods\afrikaanermod
-Just run Civ4 than click "advanced" > "load a Mod" > afrikaanermod. Now the game says that it must restart to load the mod, accept it and the game will restart with the afrikaaners.

Happy Playing!

Greetings

I have been playing with the Afrikaners for the last 2 weeks and found them very nice to play with. Stirred something patriotic.

Some issues:
Early in the game the spy-build option is in the city build menu, although, unelectable until one build Scotland Yard.
Afrikaaners are spelled wrong. It should be Afrikaners - Noun. Although were Afrikaans is used, its fine.

Thank you

That's how it always works, once you discover communism or fascism the spy unit is shown in the city build list but only becomes available to a city that builds scotland yard. Unless of course you mean that the spy unit becomes visible in the build list before it is discovered, in which case it is a bug. :)

Yes...the spy is visible in the build list before the discovery communism or fascism. Its is already visible when building my first city in 4000BC.

Hmm, well then it's either a straight game bug in which case I can't help you much. However, it could also be just a mix up in the mod's XML files. You can check that - just go to Civ4UnitInfos.xml and find the UNITCLASS_SPY entry, scroll down a bit and see if it has TECH_UTOPIA as prerequisite tech (<PrereqTech> tag). If for whatever reason it doesn't then that would explain why the spy is immidietly visible on the build list. You can fix that by simply adding the TECH_UTOPIA prerequisite tech, it should look like this,
Code:
<PrereqTech>TECH_UTOPIA</PrereqTech>

I agree.

I've heard that some Afrikaners don't enjoy being called Boers anymore. Do you know if this is true?

I'll give the mod a go just now.

Interesting, but the Boers are really simply a small part of the Dutch civilization, with some Germans and a few others thrown in for good measure. Afrikaans is a Dutch dialect.
Otoh, we also had Byzantines and Carthagians in Civ. :)

Actually, most consider Afrikaans a language in its own right. Fine, it bears a lot of resemblance to Dutch, but so does Flemish, and that's its own language.

And the Americans were originally also just a part of another civilization - the British Empire. This is true of many civs. (Not that I'm saying the Americans shouldn't be in the game. ;))

America is actually a mixture of the British Empire (East Coast), French Empire (Mid-West), Spanish Empire (South West), Dutch Empire (New York), not to mention the fact the land was originally the land of countless tribes.

Thats what makes America kind of unique. Regardless though, the topic was language and in America.... English is spoken, not American

One could say the Afrikaners are also a mixture.

But, in any case, I think Chamaedrys should change "Afrikaaners" to "Afrikaners" in his next update - not that it's all-important, though.

No, it's not.

No, "THE" Americans weren't. Only some of them, and only a minority of the settlers had English as their native language. But the most important difference is that the Americans developed a culture of their own, whereas the Boers simply continued the Dutch culture.

Afrikaans is NOW an official language standard, but this is hardly relevant for civ. It is still the same as when it was seen as a Dutch dialect and a Dutchman can easily understand it. So linguistically it is still a dialect. In contrast, Frysian is a different language and is NOT easily understood by non-Frysian Dutch.

By the way, the Boers did not speak Afrikaans. They spoke Dutch. (Dutch was also the language of those parts of Germany where some of the Boers originated from.)

Dutch remained one of the formal languages in South Africa until 1984.
