JalNES I: Quick and Easy

Reformations

In 1743, the date typically associated with the founding by Brittanian scholars, a man washed ashore far from his native home would found a city that would- through deciet and loyalty- unite the isle of Brittania. The man, Brutus, would eventually found one of the most powerful kingdoms in the world- Brittania. But that wouldn't be for another four or five centuries. Rather the man laid the foundations for the kingdom- Caer Troia.

Three centuries later the kingdom had expanded greatly and was locked in an alliance with Wessex- its southern neighbor. The chances of either kingdom gaining an advantage over the other were slim, but lucky for Brittania it wasn't left to chance. An Eirian King, name unkown, came to both Brittania and Wessex asking for assistance against troublesome league. Both agreed.

But unfortuantly for Wessex, King Arius I decided that his word wasn't worth much and decided to take advantage of the given opputunity. While the Wessex fleet set sail to secure the Irish, Arius's fleet lingered behind. For good reason too. They waited for the Wessex fleet to set sail then landed a large army and beseiged Plymouth. A second army invaded from the east. And Wessex became nothing more than a province of Brittania.

Three centuries later all of the island have been secured for the kingdom along with the northern islands. Peace lingered on the horizion- a peace that wouldn't last. You see, at the time the small nation of Maar was definitly jealous of Brittanian wealth- so they raided it. And beyond that, they set up a colony on Brittania's border and attempted another raid. A raid that would lead to their destruction. Maar was overwhelemed, destroyed and sattered. Brittiana grew stronger and received a number of colonies.

This, however, was the end of Brittania. You see, after over a thousand years of ruling Brittania, the line of Brutus died off. Tirius III, last king of Brittania, perished without leaving an heir. What he did leave, however, was a headache. Three men immediatly claimed power- Carimius, leader of the Scots; Rydirus Brittanian admiral; and Cornus, elder council to Tirius. All three had their strengths- Carimius could had easily declared an independant kingdom and received much support from his native Scots; Rydirus was extremely popular due to his father's prevention of the Maarian raid and the defeat of Maar; and Cornus was well liked by the general masses.

It looked like a civil war was brewing on the horizion. But, as fate seems to always interfer, it would not come. Carimus knew that he had little chance of surviving a war after the south was decided and threw his support to Cornus-an old friend in exchange for some promises. With his support in the north, Rydirus knew that it would be unlikely that he would be able to defeat Cornus and decided to keep his life and exact some promises from him. Thus civil war was advoided and peace ensued.

The promises came into effect under what was known as the "Reformation" by Cornus. The first were promises made to Carimus. For countless centuries the popular tradition of referring to the kingdom as "Brittania", refering to the spirit of the island, had to be removed. For one thing, Carimus claimed, the name was much too hard to spell. Another was the movement away from the feminest traditions. Thus the kingdom was renamed "High Kingdom of Briton" [1], with the adjective becoming britonian.

The second of Carimus' demands was to make every sot a citizen of the kingdom, which they weren't before. The third and final was the reconstruction of the city of Edinburgh, an ancient city of the Scots. This was done and Carimus surrendered.

The second part of the reformation was Rydirus' requests. The first, the biggest, was the division of the kingdom. Basically it was a system of rule from tiers, withthe "High Kingdom of Briton" at the top ruled by the King. Underneath the Kingdom was divided into thirds- the Kingdom of Wessex, The Kingdom of Brittania, and the Kingdom of the Scots. Three governors, appointed by the king regulary, would administer the provinces from their capitals- Plymouth, York, and Edinburg- for the king and report to their findings to him. Under them it was divided into a number of districts all headed by a counciler that reported back to the govenor.

The final section delt with the religion. The king officialy accepted the Celtic gods and worshipped them- a request of the Scots.

[1]- I was planning on using the name along time ago but LB beat me to it so I held it off. I couldn't care less now I'm going ahead. And yes, I know this was horrible. I'm just not that inspired anymore.

To Prussia
From Brittania

The land you claim is west of the river. How would you like it if we claimed land east of the river? You too can expand far and wide- to your north, east, and south. You could easily crush the barbarians to your south and annex them. Do not talk about possibilities. But it is something that needs to be thought about- not decided on a whim. We have no immediate way to claim such lands so we will not voice our decision.

From Prussia
To Brittanica

We will just drop it until or if the conflict arises. This is a silly and pointless argument.

Update 13:
Aftershocks

800-700 BC

Atyria, as usual, is an island of peace from the conflicts that rage to its south. While other nations raise armies and kill each other, Atyria raises an army and kills barbarians, helped by the recent completion of the Clack Towers, a nationwide network of sentry towers that allow messages to be sent rapidly from Iggiland to Violin and anywhere in between.

The initial strike is south along both sides of the Black Sea coast, to establish land borders with Byzantium and former Medea. The invasion is successful (-500 Swordsmen, -500 Axemen, -500 Spearmen, -500 UU, -100 Chariots), but the Atyrian traders are unsure what to do now that Atyria is no longer isolated. Will the borders be fortified to protect from invasion? Will cities be founded and land-based trade routes form? Should the entire Black Sea become an Atyrian lake? And how will the events to their southeast (see below) affect them?

The next round of expansion consists of expansion up all four of the great rivers that empty into the Black Sea. Expansion is much tougher here, and the Atyrians take substantial casualties (-1500 Swordsmen, -2000 Spearmen, -2000 Axemen, -2000 UU, -250 Chariots), finally being forced to stop far short of their goals.

-------------------------------------------------------

Atyria also continues to sell iron weapons, and this may very well be what saved Carthage, for with the Roman merchants strangely unresponsive, it is decided to purchase iron from Atyria, who is also offering it, instead. Luckily for Carthage, although there is no iron near the capital, there is adequate iron near Saldae to recruit a sizable force of swordsmen, spearmen and galleys. Using iron, the colonies expand towards each other, nearly merging their territory (-500 Swordsmen, -500 Spearmen). The rest of the army is stationed in Carthage proper, and this is fortunate, for it is there that Rome attacks.

In Rome, the Imperial Library is finished, to much rejoicing, as Rome is once again at the forefront of knowledge. Meanwhile, in the north, money is invested into mining, but these efforts prove useless as no iron is found--unless something else could be mined?

All this pales, of course, in comparison to Rome's decision to honor its alliance with Syracuse. The military marches in a great parade through Rome and onto the fleet of 90 Galleys waiting to carry it to Syracuse (+1 confidence). Except that only some of it is bound for Syracuse, as, claiming it planned to invade Rome and Syracuse in conjunction with Tartessos, Rome declares war on Carthage shortly after--before its NAP had expired, no less (-1 confidence).

With half of the Carthaginian fleet fighting an upsurge of pirate activity in the west (-5 galleys), the larger Roman fleet of the Holy Dove is able to destroy the rest of Carthage's army outside the capital, although they do succeed in blocking the harbor and forcing the Romans to land outside the city (Carthage: -30 Galleys, Rome: -35 Galleys), buying time for the garrison from Cirta to reinforce Carthage. The Romans, who had expected a smaller garrison equipped with bronze weapons, are shocked to find a larger, well-equipped force. When they try to assault the city, the Longbowmen, proficient with fire arrows, are able to burn the catapults and rams the Romans construct. In furious fighting, the Romans are pushed back to the beaches, and finally forced to retreat with the remnants of their force (Rome: -7 Catapults, -1500 Swordsmen, -600 Spearmen, -300 Archers, Carthage: -1600 Swordsmen, -500 Spearmen, -300 UU).

Another, smaller Roman force (Holy Goose) had landed outside Cirta after the garrison had left. Not knowing they only faced a few troops, they waited for the victorious Holy Dove army to arrive, and were surprised when a much-reduced army limped into their campsite. However, upon hearing the news that the garrison from Cirta was now in Carthage, the Romans decided to make the best of a bad situation, and assaulted the city, taking it before reinforcements could arrive (Rome: -3 Catapults, -1000 Swordsmen, -500 Spearmen, -100 Archers, Carthage: -500 Swordsmen, -500 Spearmen, -300 UU, 1 spending point from Carthage to Rome).

Interestingly, Syracuse has not declared war on Carthage, stating that they will not support an aggressive attack. For this reason, they have not ceased trade with Carthage, and as Rome is unwilling to sink the ships of its ally, Carthage continues to be an active trader.

Rome's other war goes well. The massive allied fleet crushes Tartessos' fleet (Syracuse: -40 Galleys, -5 Roman Galleys, Tartessos: -40 Galleys), and Syracuse succeeds in taking its colony back (Syracuse: -1500 Spearmen, -500 Roman Swordsmen, Tartessos: -1500 Spearmen). However, Tartessos has set up fortifications, and the outnumbered allies smash against them to no avail (Tartessos: -500 Spearmen, Syracuse: -600 Spearmen, -100 Roman Spearmen, -300 Archers).

-------------------------------------------------------

Centuries of work on their road network have paid off, as the Prussian Empire completes their incredibly advanced road network, achieving many feats of engineering in the process (+4 infrastructure, +1 education, +1 confidence). All barbarian raids have come to a halt, as the network of roads and watchtowers means a sizable force can be at the site of a raid within hours or even minutes.

Of course, this is only true in Prussia proper. On the frontiers, an active war with the barbarian tribes continues, (-1200 Spearmen, -1200 UU, -1000 Archers, +1 size), as the borders of Prussia proper are pushed west across the Oder, and expansion continues down the Elbe, where the city of Hamburg is founded (+1 urban economy).

Not all of the news is good for Prussia, though. Although no raids have been launched against Britannia, relations with them and Eirehann have continued to sour, especially since the nations of the Isles have expanded to the mainland.

In the east, meanwhile, entire tribes have been begging to take shelter in Prussia, trying to take refuge from an expansionistic despotism called Novgorod. Although small, it has the potential to grow greatly in size.

-------------------------------------------------------

In Srivijaya, the Imperial Palace is completed, to the delight of the populace (+Palembang cultural center, +2 confidence). Even more tribes flock to the banner of the Hyang dynasty, as expansion continues in the south (-300 Spearmen, -300 Archers). Meanwhile, trade increases with Funan, and a formal trade route is formed (+1 trade economy to Srivijaya, Funan).

All is not well, however, as the last Hyang king is sickening, and has no heirs...

-------------------------------------------------------

Egypt halts its Nubian campaigns for now, building fortifications at the second cataract to fall back to in case of major Nubian invasion, as opposed to the raids that are a fact of life in the Far South (-200 Spearmen, -200 Swordsmen).

Egypt also founds the city of Tanis opposite Mecca. So far, the smaller city is insignificant compared to the great trade capital that is Mecca, but that may change. It has not yet helped mend the recent falling-out between Egypt and the Hedjaz.

In addition, the largely-peaceful tribes near Cyrene are assimilated into Egypt (-500 Swordsmen, -400 Spearmen, -300 Archers, -100 UU).

To the north, the League grows even bigger with the incorporation of Medean lands west of the Tigris, as per the last wish of Iaxeres III. The city of Tarsus is founded in Anatolia, and construction of a great port begins there. Money is poured into increasing infrastructure, and troops try to secure the new lands.

However, all sides involved had forgotten about one thing--the Hittites. Promised aid and their own nation by Ur in return for their help against the Medes, they had loyally fought on their side throughout the war. But now, they felt betrayed, denied any voice in the world. So, bitter, they rose up (1 urban economy from League to Hittites, 1 spending point from League to Hittites). As of yet, they have not been attacked, though their armed forces, at least, could be easily crushed.

The land between the Tigris and Euphrates has been cut off from the rest of the League. Destroyed by centuries of war, it awaits the next blood to be spilt on its soil.

This is part 2 of 3. I forgot: the update should be titled Update 13: Aftershocks.

-------------------------------------------------------

The Spartan build two cities, Thessalonika on the site of the former League colony and Apollonia on the former League coast. Neither has yet attracted much trade or interest.

This is, of course, unimportant compared to the ongoing war with Byzantium. The Byzantines purchase iron from Atyria, and even so have enough left over to build a fleet far larger than expected. It is now clear that the Byzantines are receiving financial aid from someone.

When the fleets face off, the Spartans launch a massive attack and succeed in dividing the Byzantine force in three, then manage to destroy the middle of the Byzantine fleet while preventing the rest of their ships from coming to the aid of the middle. (Sparta: -50 Galleys, Byzantium: -60 Galleys). However, the skilled Byzantine sailors are able to reform their fleet, and succeed in driving off the smaller Spartan host (Sparta: -30 Galleys, Byzantium: -35 Galleys). Once again, the Spartans are repulsed (-1 confidence).

-------------------------------------------------------

Yamato invades Kibi, expecting aid from Izumo. However, it does not come, and thus the Yamato are forced to fight Kibi at the place of their choosing. Although the Yamato manage to inflict a disproportionate amount of casualties due to their better training and archers (Kibi: -2000 Spearmen, Yamato: -1000 Samurai, 500 Archers), the war stalemates just inside the border.

Only then do the Izumo invade with the large army they have been slowly gathering. Although the capital holds out, it is surrounded, and the Izumo take most of western Kibi (Kibi: -2000 Spearmen, Izumo: -2500 Spearmen).

-------------------------------------------------------

The Medes waited too long to remove threats to their power, and were instead destroyed by one of them. Ur has clearly learned from this lesson.

Ur and Dilmun were already allies, and the recent royal marriage meant that both nations were ruled by the same king. Still, when the two nations were merged into the Sumerian Empire (+1 size, +1 rural economy, +1 trade economy, +1 education, -1 culture, -2 confidence), many Dilmunese were not happy. The treasury disappeared, and the island in the Strait of Hormuz defected to Magan, giving them complete control of the vital trade area (1 trade economy from Sumer to Magan). Still, the population was eventually pacified.

Sumer next commenced an invasion of Magan, ignoring Dilmun's previous NAP with Magan (-1 confidence). The Maganese had half-expected something like this, and were therefore able to hastily recall their force from Socotra, at the price of the city there being overrun. As a result of the unrest during unification, the Sumerians had not been able to raise a larger fleet, and were merely the same size as Magan's. The more experienced Dilmunese sailors were able to destroy the enemy fleet (Magan: -40 Galleys, Sumer: -30 Galleys, -1200 Swordsmen, -600 Axemen), but there were no longer enough troops to perform the planned encirclement maneuver, so the remaining marines simply joined the invading army.

It did not ultimately matter, as the enemy forces were outnumbered by a factor of six. Knowing they were outnumbered, they abandoned the city and fell back to protect the capital, leaving the invading army to slog its way along the coast (-1000 UU, -500 Swordsmen, -400 Archers, -20 Chariots, 1 spending point from Magan to Sumer).

Meanwhile, a much smaller Sumerian army had headed through the Arabian desert, suffering much along the way (-200 UU, -200 Swordsmen). When the exhausted army was met by a fresher, determined one of the same size at Khaluf, they were destroyed (Ur: -800 UU, -800 Spearmen, Magan: -1000 Spearmen, -50 UU, -300 Archers).

Despite the victory at Khaluf, the Maganese are heavily outnumbered, lack the capacity to recruit many more troops without iron, and seem sure to fall unless they can gain some stronger allies...

-------------------------------------------------------

The Maar exiles are beginning to settle down. In the north, the people of Normandy settle down, building a new capital, Orleans, and slowly beginning to return their lives to normality. In Iberia, the Maar of the North join the Iberian Confederation, (+1 rural economy), The city of Madrid is founded, and is quickly becoming a regional capital. In addition, the Iberians have met the Brittanian settlers in the north, and trade has begun, with the Iberians trading spices and local goods for tin(+1 trade economy Iberia, Brittania).

No, that is no mistake. In return for their Iberian colonies, the settlement of Port Naill has become Brittanian, as per the newly signed Treaty of Niall. In a stroke of brilliance, retiring soldiers are given land in the new lands, which has inspired much expansion there.

But greater things are afoot. Tirius III, last king of Britannia, dies, and the country teeters on the brink of civil war. However, the three contenders, knowing they have nothing to gain through a civil war, agree to a plan for peace. The country, renamed the High Kingdom of Briton, is ruled by a king, who rules from Caer Troia. Underneath him are three regional governors, each ruling one of the minor kingdoms: the Kingdom of Wessex, the Kingdom of Brittania, and the Kingdom of the Scots (who are granted citizenship for the first time). Each of the minor kingdoms is in turn divided into a number of districts. The reorganization is greeted with much approval, as for the first time corruption can be crushed in rural areas (+1 rural economy, +1 confidence).

Eirehann, meanwhile, also focuses on its colonies, founding Port Domnall, Saefern Mutha, and Conway, from north to south. Contact is made with Tartessos, and as trade flourishes between them (+1 trade economy to Eirehann, Tartessos, +1 urban economy to Eirehann), the Eireans are interested in the strange metal used by Tartessos, and shocked by the evil war waged upon Tartessos by the cruel Romans and Syracusians...

We offer two choices to the People of Tartessos.

On the one hand, the people of Tartessos can join the Kingdom of Eirehann under the High King. The merchant council will retain certain privileges and a large degree of autonomy. We promise peace and prosperity in return for our two peoples becoming one. The secret of iron will, of course, be spread throughout our combined kingdom.

Our other hand holds death, destruction, and desolation. We pray that it will not come to this, as we want to work with the people of Tartessos for mutual prosperity, however we will take action if you force our hand. If you do not join with us for the security of your people and stability of the region, we will be forced to take stabilization into our own hands.

One way or the other, your lands will come under foreign rule. Whether it is split up between Rome, Syracuse, and Eirehann, or unified under Irish rule is up to you.

If the People of Tartessos accept our offer, we ask that you respect our new territory. You have already reclaimed a good amount of land and could use your troops in your Carthaginan campaigns. Of course, payment is conditional on Tartessian acceptance.
