Giant Earth Map (Eurasia Upscaled), 24 civs

Version 3.1 (Released on 09/02/2007) for Warlord v2.08 only

Follow on from version 3.0, this version still has the reduced size of the map (200x80, a total of 16000 tiles, about 15% decrease from version 2.2.) This version however, edited with better landscape. After spent some time modifying the coastal line of South America and Africa, the gap between the two continent is now wider. There are some minor changes also included.

I still keep v2.2 in this release because i feel v2.2 is the perfect version. I also included the Eurasia cutdown version BUT with 24 civs in this release saving you to download again (this map includes both the celt and thai as well as an extra indian and an extra chinese civ, which replaced the 3 civs in the Americas). The files are small for download after zipped anyway.

Background:
After more than half a year's of work, I finally completed this Giant Earth Map. The download provides you with two versions of Giant world map and some simple modification of the game, including a new civ and a modified version of the default city name list.

The features of this map are:

1) Giant size Earth map (200 x 80) with 24 civs (v3.1) (for Warlords).
2) There are two versions of each version of Giant World map, one with the default 24 civs (the Celt version) and one with Celt replaced by Thai (the Thai version). Thai in this mod is really a just a mix of Indian, Chinese and Mongols with Thai city names.
3) The entire map is drawn manually (i.e. without using a map generator). This enables the flexibility to upscale the size of any interested region.
4) Fully referenced resource allocation. Nearly all resources are placed based on real statistics.

I also attached a excel file detailing the statistics (v2.2 only) and a TIF file (v2.0 only) for the way the borders are divided (for statistic purpose). You will find a lot of interesting statistic from this file, like how much a region is scaled (for example, England is 3.71 times upscaled) or how many of a particular resource is placed within a region (for example, Southern China has 8 rice).

The download:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=2682 - Version 3.1

Instruction (for Newbies):

Download the zip file and extract it to the following path:

"My Documents\My Game\Warlords\MODS\" (While this path always works for me, I think it doesn't work for some people)

or

"C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords\Mods" (This path should always work, but the exact name would be different depending on how you installed your game.)

After you placed the folder in the above path. Start your game normally. Then click "Advanced" in the menu, click "Load a mod" and select "Giant Earth Map" . The game will restart but with the mod this time. Then goto "Single player", "play a scenario" and pick a map of your like.

WARNING: the map is Giant in size and it will straint your PC. RAM seems to be particularly important. I won't try this map on a PC with less than 1G of RAM. In the usual case, this would mean waiting for ages to load between each turn; in the worst case, your game would be quited without saving because it is running out of ram.

Lastly, please come back and put a rating and drop a comment. If commenting, please try to be precise and constructive so that I know exactly what you want it to be.

Version 3.1 Change log
Spoiler :

1) Moved the entire Americas back down 3 tiles.
2) Shorten Argentina and Chile by about 2 tiles.
3) Reshaped eastern coastline of South America.
4) Reshaped western coastline of Africa.
5) Moved Iceland 1 tile back up.
6) Moved Cape Verde closer to Africa by 1 tile.
7) Added Azores back on the map.

Version 3.0 Change log
Spoiler :

This version cut down the map size to 200x80. It includes the following:
1) Moved Iceland 1 tile down
2) Moved New Zealand 2 tiles up
3) The entire Americas 3 tiles up
4) Chopped out about 7 tiles from the arctic circle and 3 tiles from the Southern Ocean.
5) Chopped out 5 columns in the Pacific, about where Alaska is.
6) Chopped out 5 columns in the Atlantic.
7) Some changes in the landscape of north eastern Brazilian coast.
8) Some changes in the landscape of alaska coast.
9) Some changes in the landscape of the north eastern Canadian coast.

Version 2.2 Change log
Spoiler :

1) Redraw the Oceans. I have to admit that the secret pathways in the middle of the oceans isn't as fun/useful as I was intending. Since it is also unrealistic, so I decided to remove them. Instead, I have increased the width of the coast, minimum of 2 tiles away from the land - decreasing the chance of sea routes being blocked by enemy coastal city's influence.
2) Added a few more islands in the south pacific and carribean. Especially south pacific islands, including Tonga and Niue which are required for my 1200AD scenario.
3) Added some resources (1 fish, 1 crab, 1 clam, 1 banana and 1 whale together with the existing 1 sugar, 1 gold and 1 marble) around those islands giving a bit of possibility for the Tongan Empire to grow (although still little in comparison.)
4) Added text labels for all the islands on the map. I got frustrated when I was modifying the pacific islands and keep mixing up with which island is which. So I decided to add in labels which I think will help everyone else too.

Bug fixes:
1) Max number of turn was 460. This line is deleted.

More to come, but I need YOUR feedback to know what needs to be done! Please let me know what you think the map should be, no matter it is just one tile that you think is not correct.

Also, thanks Kswoll for his MapEditor. Without it, I can't possibily do cut and paste sooo many times to get the right scale I want for building this map.

I am downloading right away, looks good so far. First thing i am doing is get rid of that Lone Star flag for the USA, put my own American flag in, but looks great, like the way you put Asia as the Center focus rather than the USA. Takes a bid to get used to that.
Did you make separate version for North America, Europe, etc?

Thanks for replying so promptly, faster than I putting everything up :)

I haven't make other separate versions yet. But if you are interested in a particular region, you can always cut that out using map editor.

Since you downloaded the map while I was still uploading and typing, you migh not have downloaded my statistic files. You might want to download the zip file from the link again to get those.

I mountains in Germany confuse me. Besides the Alpes seperating Germany from Italy in the south Germany has hardly any real mountains (as mountains are defined in CIV).
That nuisance aside, the map looks great!

Actually, I did not define Mountains by their absolute height, but by their relative height in this map.

The reason is that, I want to enable city placement in the highlands. For example, if you look at those regions like Tibet, Andes and Rocky mountain, you will see a lot of hill or plain tiles surrounded by mountain tiles. That's because in relative terms, the tiles that are surrounded by mountain tiles are not as tall. Most of these tiles, however, I used tundra to represent that they are actually highlands.

For Germany, since it is mostly plain land in reality, smaller hills will feature as mountains in this map.

But I didn't do this systematically, I might did something wrong in certain regions. Let me have a check.

I already recommended your map to some modders, you mind if they use your map or anyone else for that reason?

Of course I don't mind. That's the purpose of sharing the map here :)

WOW

Did you test the gameplay ? I'm curious what amount of ram I need to play THIS :)

I like how the Turks start where the nomatic Turkish tribes were instead of the Anatolian peninsula BUT that said, aren't they totally screwed in terms of comparative starting location? I haven't tried yet, but that looks like a really, really, really horsehockey startng place to me. Mountains on below and desert on top with no plentiful inbetween.

Genghis, while looking at the excel sheet, I read that Argentina, Brasil and all of south america has no cows! The thing is that the region is the second biggest exporter of meat. Even if cows are not native to the area, there should be some as there are cows in North America, a place where cows aren´t native also.

Apart from that, great map!! :goodjob:

sigh... it's things like these that show exactly how arrogant Americans are.

1. Do you think any other civ's (nation) flag matches their actual flag correctly? What's the point in replacing the flag for this one civ, IN A GAME!? It serves no purpose, it's just window dressing. If you don't like it, you simply don't have to stare at it and drool while singing the star spangled banner like you probably do everytime you see an American flag.

2. Hmmm... yes. let's compare the CONTINENT of Asia to the COUNTRY of the USA... No, that's not arrogant at all. Really. I'm serious, it's not.

Oh, and before you call me an "American Hater" or anything like that, you should probably know that I am an American, and it simply sickens me to see such arrogance in my fellow Americans.

BTW, great map... good work.
