In tears I tossed my coin from Trevi's edge. A coin unsordid as a bond of love-- And, with the instinct of the homing dove, I gave to Rome my rendezvous and pledge. And when imperious Death has quenched my flame of breath, Oh, let me join the faithful shades that throng that fount above.

Heart of the Republic - A Rome: Total War AAR

“We could have all of Italy, you know.” said Till.
The Consular smiled. He had had this conversation many a time with Till. He was a lively one, wishing to expand Rome’s control beyond what was…natural. In a way, Kan agreed, but he preferred to maintain the status quo. To retain Roman values and traditions. The Republic lived and thrived, there was no need to upset the balance with unwanted attacks.
“Confinium is just a few days march away” Till continued. “And to take it would be just a minor siege. Not to mention that the barbarians there have been particularly vicious recently, it would not be hard to convince the senate that…”
“Peace, Till.” said Kan. “Your continued desire for war is rather worrying. We will defend ourselves if needed. The Republic does not desire war.”
“Yet?” Till replied.
“Yet.” Said Kan. And he smiled again…

The Republic. Kan and Till can be seen at the bottom,

Friends, Romans, CFC’ers, lend me your ears! Those of you used to the Council of my old Hearts of Iron game, welcome back. You know the story, you know what to do, but now you can even be slightly different - because the game now is Rome: Total War! You can actually be in-game. Inspired by PrinceScamp’s ’I was blasting Soviet aircraft and Para trooping in Britain’, I decided that - if my new council members choose - they may actually do it.

And to any newcomers, welcome! This is obviously a Rome AAR (after action report). I play it as I go, then write an update straight afterwards. Given the remarkably spectacular success of my previous one, I felt it would be rather silly not to allow folks to join. So go ahead. Be a general, a senator or just post and give advice to me, as I’m hardly a Rome: Total War veteran. And there's absolutely no need to have the game. All responsibility lies with me. Though I may blame you

Game: Rome: Total War
Mod: Rome: Total Realism Mod (my first time)
Difficulty: Normal settings (I think :P)

Spoiler The History of the Republic, Volume One :

The Council of Doom

Spoiler Senators and Generals :

I'm trying not to suffocate the game with too many rules. The idea here is to have fun, not get bogged down. But here are my ideas:

Senators are the leaders of the Republic. They may put forward motions and ideas that will drive Rome forward. They decide who to wage war on, whether we should focus on military or economy. They vote on the motions, and what the decide is law. If they wish they may govern a specific region or city.

Generals have actual avatars on the map. They will lead the campaigns. I will try my utmost to represent a Generals wishes and doctrines on the battlefield. They may be 'killed' in game, but there is always an heir.

My job is to translate what is discussed on this thread into actual in-game terms and report it.

I'll try to keep it up to date and modify it as we gain territory information.

you can certainly expect your old Field Marshall however you've probably seen how that turned out, but this is earlier in time :p,

Sir, Ready for duty!

Good to be back!
If i recall, the senate will come up with missions all the time, so it might be best not to start a war on our own for a while.
But we need to be prepared...
*hurries off to inspect the troops*

Wonderful! Let's prepare a memo for the other houses, to inform them who is the Emperor. The messenger should be escorted by several divisions, purely for protection, of course. :mischief:

Its better than the normal game in my opinion. I just wish that the AI tried to encircle my troops a lot more or decided to build more cavalry and archers. Peltasts are not a substitute for good cretan archers and elephants are a waste of cash.

I'm currently playing as the Greek cities so my game will probably end up very different to yours. Macedonia has been reduced to two northern cities and Phyrrus has conquered Sicily for me however the Romans have recently declared war and invaded southern Italy. In the long term I know that I will push them back however I may lose a city or two.

Also I played Rome a while ago. I united Italy but wanted to go for an alternate history approach so I invaded Illyria. Eventually I had to conquer Macedonia as they declared war. I got sick of repeatedly wiping out enemy armies partially because Roman infantry is too mobile and thus it is easy to trap the enemy. I think you should start with one particularly good general who is probably best used in the south to get some additional bonuses and be ready to defeat Phyrrus.

A few quick tips as well:
Never let the AI control a normal battle. There is some sense in letting it control city assaults where the enemy has few troops however I've seen the AI lose battles where I reloaded and won with 90% of the army remaining and on another occasion a unit of cavalry managed to kill nearly 200 troops when I had around 1000 troops on the battle field.

I tend to stop the AI from building troops and make sure loyalty never drops to red as there will be a revolt. Usually cities that have a character in can have maximum taxes however some characters have negative traits.

Archers and Peltasts are great for softening up the enemy, killing elephants and chasing after routed infantry. It is useful to leave infantry units behind them and to probably turn off skirmish mode so that they will hold their ground and allow the infantry to support them rather than running away and being chased down by enemy cavalry (Trust me its not nice).

Final piece of advice would be that the AI seems to always declare war if they have a land border so leaving rebels in between is a potential solution early on. I doubt you will really have a problem with Rome though as Gaul didn't seem to have many troops in Northern Italy when I played.

*raises his hand*

Ahh, Rome! So! You got room for any positions? I'll take whatever you'll give me, though there might be a need for a good spymaster; backstabbing the enemy's got to be done, after all, even if it is a dirty business.

Goodness folks, thanks for the response. I haven't even done a proper post yet!

I've only thrown in positions according to what your initial posts say, BTW, if your a senator and want to be a general (or vice versa) just say. :)

As for the RTR mod, I've heard a lot of good things about it, and I've played the proper game a lot. This is my first time, and I feel a first time for me will suit this AAR rather well :)

Subius, Minister of Silly Walks, checking in!

so a senator only blabbers around trying to make his agenda go through ?

way I see it, a senator give the overall votes and has the highest say in the Senate. The general will have the military say afterwards, and they will have personal avatars on the map.*

This is a very early test, BTW, I'm hoping everyone bears with me :)

*Edit: The senators decide Greece is more important than Carthage, then decide to assign which generals will be assigned to the campaign - the Generals have actual avatars in-game - so they get to decide what they want their armies to do to attack, in which they gain prestige and glory for Rome.

Edit Edit: In addition: NEVER worry that what you're doing is wrong. Play for the fun of it and have the time of your life. You're in Rome, role-playing, fun and joy is the name of the game ;)

Is Sillily even a word? :p

ok Kan' Nice explanation! ..... I will senatarise all your asses!

@SuBI : senator of Sicily Walks :p
